Busse vs Spartan Blades vs Esee

Cypress, it seems I'll have to grab a TGLB as well, I've been on the fence for quite awhile now.

I might have to quote your post in my sig haha great post, great pics.

And that looks like an Estwing, I use mine everyday at work and would swear by it, seen guys break wood handle hammers and I never have to worry about silly things like that :D

Cypress has inspired me.

Nice! Great to see these awesome knives in use. It never occurred to me to use them for road construction. It would be a kick to see one of those strapped to the side of the next flagger I see on the road!

This is becoming a great thread!

Also, sorry for costing you guys so much money. There's a very strong negative correlation with time spent on BF and the number in your bank account.

I can't comment on most of what you said, but it's probably correct. ESEE makes a great knife at a fair price, but to call the warranty "pretty good"? If you send ESEE a Junglas in two pieces, tell Jeff you got bored and cut it in half with a torch, he will send you a brand new one. That's about the BEST warranty I've ever seen. If another company can beat that, I'd like to hear the details.

I thought the same thing. That's fine if Esee isn't really your thing but don't downplay their warranty/CS, their is a reason it is the most legendary in the business. They are good knives for the money but naturally they will fall short if you compare them to knives that are three times the price.

There is no other fixed blade on earth that is as tough as a Busse. Don't care what anyone says. Busse makes the absolute toughest knives in the world FACT. I don't care about your $3,000 custom fixed blade. A Busse will chop it in half without breaking a sweat. If you can afford one, buy it and never look back.

That being said ESEE also makes great knives for the price with a no non sense and no questions asked warranty just like Busse.

STAY AWAY FROM SPARTAN BLADES PERIOD. They are small and absurdly overpriced for what you get and frankly I would not trust them for "hard use" on account that they use S35VN steel, a stainless steel that is relatively brittle and prone to breaking/chipping. For the price of a Spartan you could get a Busse for just a few dollars more.

Don't bother, he's incorrigible.

The TGLB is one BAD A$$ knife. It is the only one I have sold that I really miss. I have an Anniversary Straight Handled Battle Mistress on order. It is a very expensive knife, but I have had several Busses, and I find them worth the money. While the warranty is top notch, the knives are so overbuilt and so tough, I can't imagine needing it. I also agree that if you have the itch, nothing else will scratch it. I highly recommend the TGLB.

Busses are very solid knives but for general utility I find them too thick and heavy. They can get the job done. For a heavy duty beater I think they are great.

If Busse made something that blended the Phrike and Flashpoint I'd buy it in a heartbeat. I've just found the way the handles are curved on those two knives to be incredibly comfortable for me. I'm pretty much sold on Busse knives from this, but they're pretty large for what I'd use a knife for regularly. That being said, the TGLB looks fantastic for anything that would or could be flat out abuse and hard use, and would take one into the field without hesitation.

I've watched someone clamp a machete into a vice and chop at the edge with an Scrap Yard (part of the Busse family) 1111. The 1111 reacted as if it had hit soft pine, while the other machete had massive chunks broken out of the edge.

Ahh, what you want is some Thinfi steel... Thin = where INFI really shines. I've got a hawkbill utility blade that is 1/8" thick, flat ground to a very thin edge, and tapered to the tip. That thing is mean.

Busse is very good at grinding thick stock to such a thin edge that in use, it feels like a thinner blade. Their latest Battle Mistress chopper is flat ground so thin that it can bind in wood, but it's 3/8" thick

Exactly my point. Even Scrap Yard along with Swamp Rat (who are also part of the Busse family) make some pretty indestructible knives as well. Was that SY you saw in the video one of their versions using INFI?

If you send ESEE a Junglas in two pieces, tell Jeff you got bored and cut it in half with a torch, he will send you a brand new one.

I highly doubt that.

If you actually told him that, I think he would tell you to F off and never buy one of his knives again. However if he actually did replace it for you, he would still tell you to F off and never buy one of his knives again. I've never really liked Jeff. I remember he always used to butt heads with fans and skeptics over at the ESEE forum and sometimes act like a flat out jerk to people.

Taken straight from ESEE's warranty page:

"The display case at Smoky Mountain Knife Works in Tennessee features
many of the abused and broken knives we have replaced under warranty. This
particular knife was shot by an idiot with various calibers until it broke."

"We would rather idiots not buy our knives."

I can understand where he's coming from when he wrote this but regardless I still think it's a bit rude and unprofessional from his part.

You questioned my point in the first line, then proved it a few lines later. Whatever you think of Jeff or Mike, they will replace the knife. That IS the warranty and it was/will be fulfilled. If they call you names afterward and tell you to go play somewhere else, that's their right. But, they've still fulfilled their warranty. It's happened plenty of times.

Busse vs Spartan Blades vs Esee

If you mention Spartan with Busse and ESEE, you cannot leave Survive! and and Fehrman Knives out of it, in my humble opinion.

Of course you cannot go wrong with a TLGB.

Feel free to talk about them as well.

That's sounds more like a sales pitch. No way that is absolute fact. My Schrade SCHF1 will do just as good as a Busse for a whole lot less money. :)

Both Survive! as Fehrman come in incredible tough CPM 3V. And a nice kydex sheath. I think the Fehrman First Strike, Final Judgement, Extreme Judgement and the Survive! GSO 7/7 and GSO 10 all give just a little more value for money compared to the TLGB. But I completely understand going for a Busse.

If you are thinking Busse then you are already going in the right direction because they really do back their products 100% and they are what Busse says they are and will do what Busse says they will do. That said with that warranty the knives better really be as good as they as they are and the good thing is they really are.

EESE, well they are good knives in a simple spring steel that is 1095, same steel you can get in knives ranging from $2 to thousands depending on the maker and the actual knife... They are OK, they are serviceable and the warranty is pretty good and they are priced in the lower range so if one is more budget minded then they will work fine.

I want to add without any offense, that I think it is a little unfair to point out the excellence of the warranty of Busse and then calling the no-questions-asked if-you-break-it-we'll-fix-it life-time warranty of ESEE "pretty good". I agree they are "OK", but in my opinion that OK is still one of the best value-for-money 1095-blades in that price range, especially the 4 and 5 with their awesome kydex sheaths. Awesome total package for the money in my opinion. And almost three times cheaper than a Busse or Spartan. So in that sense they're just not really comparable.

Well, how would you call someone who shoots ! a knife repeatedly with the intention to simply destroy it ? Thats not what their warranty is for, even if it is covered. Rude ? yes. Unprofessional? maybe. True ? absolutely.
