Busses and Whisky

1. Whiskey should keep pretty much indefinitely.
2. Only one way to find out.
3. I definitely would. I don't know if they had whiskey figured out yet in 1987, but I'd sure like to find out.
4. The 18YO Yamazaki (made by Suntory) that I bought several years ago was really good outstanding, so I suspect they knew what they were doing in the 80s.

Whiskypedia says:

"Suntory old whisky is a series of whiskies from Suntory, first released in 1950 when it was considered the classiest of all of Suntory’s whiskies. The company occasionally releases new bottles of this brand, this is a wonderful bottle of Suntory’s blended Japanese malt whisky, perfect for casual sipping."
The Whisky Exchange says:

"Suntory Old is a popular release from Japan. First produced in the 1940s, it remained one of the most prestigious whiskies to come out of the country until the 1980s when single malts grew in popularity. Medium-bodied with spicy notes, this is an excellent Japanese sipping whisky."
A similar looking bottle with a damaged label sold at auction last year for £70.00. (Note that where yours says 1766 at the bottle of the label, the one on the auction site says 2966. IN the pictures I've seen online, newer looking bottles seem to have higher numbers, but always ending in 66. Except the really new looking ones that don't have that number at all. I don't know what that number means, but I'd guess yours is an older batch.)

For whatever that's worth.

I found a passage that 1766 was the founding of the distillery originally known as “Kotobukiya” ~ Of note, this is also a 70cl bottle- from what I've seen, you can still get it in that size bottle.
Yeah a bit of a mystery. My brother in law was stationed there and bought it because he didn't know if he would ever get back again, which he did after all a couple years later. So, possibly an 86' bottling even.
From what I gather by all accounts, it's supposed to be decent but there's been so many releases of it, who knows. There's also collectors out there, probably some possibilities but I like collecting too :D

I'd open it. The curiosity of what's inside would kill me.

I doubt the "1766" on the label is a date.

First, there's a different number on different bottles (including "dates" that would be in the future).

Second, Suntory says on their website that the company was founded in 1899 and the whisky business started in 1923 when:
Kotobukiya* sets out to create an authentic whisky born from the Japanese climate and suited to Japanese palates.

*Kotobukiya Limited founded in 1921.

Third, Wikipedia says whisky production in Japan began around 1870 and the first commercial production was 1924 with the Yamazaki distillery.

Another trip to the closeout shelf and there stood those last 2 bottles of CB Hedonism.... I just don't think people have any idea and that's good for me, sad for them.
