"Butterfly" knives ; opinion(s)

Maybe I caugh an outlier, so I ask you to share your opinion/experience about balis as a hard working tool so we forumites all learn more about balis and finally get a big and significant sample to make the best jugement. But don´t forget to give a real hard work to each one of the knifes tested.
Diogo: I'm confused. By definition, my contradiction of your experience is the direct result of my experiences with balisongs. I have used them for over 20 years, and granted I have ran into bali's that will give the results you have, I don't consider those bali's as good representations of what a bali is capable of. If I have a different experience than what you had, and am able to clarify the issues you bought up, and offer a possible alternative to your findings, how is my reaction any different than you posting a negative result? Especially when your results is an unfair representation of the abilities of a balisong? It's similar to you driving a Yugo and then declaring that all cars are bad. How fair is that?

And if you read my posts in this thread, you can see that I have been sharing the results of my findings of the balisong.

Hey you stupid mother****er check the definition of contradiction in the dictionary!!! What the **** is Diogo? Really ****ing stupid nickname hein is that your dog????

Boy at just twelve post and your talking like that to people we don't tolerate that kind of thing around here.
You need to adjust your additude or leave! :barf:

Objective? I think some people don't want to be convinced.

Much of value has been written here in favour of the Balisong, here's my tuppence worth:

1. Speed/efficiency: While I can open some folders quicker with my strong hand, the difference is small. With my left hand, however, I can open a bali quicker than any other folder and more securely (less risk of droppage). Manipulating a bali extensively also improves your strength, confidence and feel, for any knife.

2. Ergonomics: This would have been my main objection to the Bali as EDC, but my BM42A and Tachyon have proven no worse and sometimes better than my other folders. The bali is also truly ambidextrous, with none of the risks of other lock types (Axis: accidental release; lockback: strength, accidental release, debris fouling lock; Liner lock: accidental release; debris fouling lock).

3. Durability: A LOT of wear is built into the better knives, and rightly so, since they are flipped to a degree bordering on abuse by some users (I just flipped mine thru 100 cycles- counting -in less than 2 minutes) I usually flip my Tachyon for no less than an hour a day, in one month thats about 90,000 cycles. If you ONLY open it as and when you would your EDC, your bali will last forever and a day. If the temptation to flip it is too much, then you don't need anymore convincing as to the merits of a butterfly. Even when a bali is so worn that it won't firmly latch open, you can still use it as holding the two handles together effectively locks the blade, this is evident even in the cheaper knives. After this there is still some DIY that can be done.

Given the weight of positive arguments in this thread, the only way to come to an objective conclusion is to buy a decent one and use it, with an open mind.

"When the student is ready, the teacher will appear."

PS. They also make great bottle openers.

You missed the point... You should have read the discussion from the beggining and pay expecial attention to the first answer I've obtaines from tony (I think).
The issue is not whether balis are better than other non fixed blade knifes but sharing experiences with these kind of knives. Mine wasn't the best experience and, also because I wouldn't dare to expand the same kind of treatment to my other expensive balis, so I posted my results. They weren´t good but I´m not saying "Balis are not good! Period!" I'm saying "what were your experiences" so I can get a better idea of these kind of knifes as REALLY HARD WORKING TOOLS based in the hard tasks you (other forumites) put them to do. I'm really open minded to it... Maybe I'm not explaining myself...

I appreciate the fact that you are trying to express yourself in a foreign language for yourself. But you are missing the point. The fact is, we are listing our positive experiences with regards to the bali. We're not arguing if it's better than a fix blade (that was in reference to the fact that of all the folders, the bali is the one that comes closes to a fixed blade, and still can be carried as a folder). As for hard use, several people have posted those experiences as part of the reason they like the bali.

I was answering to that "Objective? Some people don't want to be convinced". The rest is repeated in your post tony (My english must be quite odd...).
By the way this seems like a conversation between deaf old people (my grand parents for example)...
Now I want to post a question:

What good quality small bali would you advise me to achieve? Where can I find it (in the net)?

Thank you!

I was thinking of a BM-31 but since I do not know many other brands I'd like to know what's in the market in terms of Good quality small balis. And which, in your oppinion would be the best choice?

Diogo:

The 'Objective' comment wasn't directed at anyone in particular. I read the whole thread before I posted and it seems that some people aren't 'listening'.

In the end, experiences of 'hard use' are very subjective. For some people hard use blunts their knives quickly, for others it gives them blisters after 5 mins. I've used my Tachyon for everything in and around the house for the past month, just cause its nearly always in my hand. I have no indication that it would give me any problems, except at a level of work for which I would probably select a fixed blade or a more specialised knife. Folders of any kind are a compromise ergonomically and balis are no exception, but they look more uncomfortable than they actually are, at least for me.

The BM31 is very popular, although I have no experience with it. If you're looking for other options, can I also suggest the Microtech Dragonfly, successor to the Tachyon, which is a bit bigger than the 31, and available from 888knivesrus for $99.99

OK. Guess you should learn how to use the "Quote" feature. This way we know what you were responding to. It's hard to track a thought when over 20 people post theirs.

Try taking a look at www.balisongtimes.com. It has a very good list of what is currently available in the world of bali's. I'm not sure how many places ship Internationally, but there are lots of places to buy BM's, MicroTech, and other bali's.

Thank you for the advise!

I'll still go for the BM-31 The "others" (brands) didn't convinced me.

see, i told you guys. some people just don't get it. it's like trying to explain sight to a blind man, he'll never understand. anyway, balis have withstood the test of time and continue to evolve. nuff said.
