Button compass

I've got a Tru Nord that I am very impressed with.
 
The Suuntos in K&M match cases are quite reliable.

Not sure how or where you'd get a single compass though.

The Marbles compass is pretty decent; it's very similar to the truenord compass. I like the NATO button compass, but $35 is a little steep.

I like the BAS button compass - You can see it here in my match case project. You cannot find the Suunto pictured above individually. I called Suunto - no go.

You can find the BAS ones on e-bay.

I got it on Ebay, Talfuchre. I think it was about 9 bucks. I think I saw them at Dick's once. You can find em on the net all over.
 
I bought 3 "NATO survival button compasses" from a mil-gear seller in England, but I find that they can stick and not give a true bearing.

I find the TruNord to be excellent compasses that I would feel safe to orienteer with.

Right now, I have a sample of both in front of me, the Tru-Nord is pointing North and the button compass is pointing west...
 
Thanks she has one with pink scales, g-10 I put on, waiting for her to grow a bit before then. She plays with it some now, because there is no way for her at this age to open it. I did a lanyard with a whistle cord end on it as well. She loves that whistle.

At least you got a year out of yours. Mine was given to me and it didn't work from day one.

If you still have it, take it apart. It works great in a cup of water like you would do with a plain old needle that you magnetized. Mine floats and always points north now. Just takes a little longer to set up is all.

Also, set it on the water flat, otherwise it can slip under the water and sink. Carefully set it on top and it works fine. Setting it on a leaf does not work at all. At least not with this one. Just set it right on the water.

This is something to keep in mind even if your current button compass is working, but fails out in the bush, or under a recliner. ;)

Here are a couple pictures of what I am talking about. The one in the water is off slightly, because the TURNORD is actually calibrated for my location.

i've been told that 10 compasses from walmart tend to point in 11 different directions.

me? i want som equality butron compasses for BOBs. mmm.
 
I don't have one, but i'm putting a Tru-Nord (and a Cammenga lensatic) on my Christmas List to Santa!!!

I've had it with liquid filled compasses. The only one i have that hasn't bubbled-out is my "old" full-size Suunto M3 Global.
 
I have had a TruNord for a a few years now. I keep it on a keychain with some other handy stuff when I'm out hiking. Solid little compass, great for confirming general direction. They are relatively weighty things for their size though, comes with the toughness.
