Buyer Beware

Just don't sell it I guess. That must be where the locomotive derails.
I have another one that is close to perfect and I love it. I heard some of these failures happen when a new owner starts messing with the pivot and tighten it all the way(why?). I have avoided messing with my first one. Good Luck.

Mine too. Got this one when they first came out and it is a keeper. Liked it so much I put a custom scale on it and carry it constantly.
No issues with action at all.
Beautiful scales.

Thanks for being candid.

For the record, people were discussing Southard bearing issues long before they were discontinued and discounted, myself included (although I came in towards the tail end of it).

I share some of your opinions, though perhaps not so vehemently, and have a few of my own as well.

One difference is that, if/when one of my Southard’s craps out, I’ll be ecstatic if I can get it fixed for $20 + shipping. (No, I’m not being a Spyderco apologist...it’s just a true statement)

It’s all perspective, I guess.

I also understand that if this “hobby” didn’t occasionally spawn some strong emotions it would be a lot less fun and most of us would be doing something other than hanging out on BFC!

I must be some sort of weirdo. I have never, ever talked to a knife company about a knife or made a complaint nor expected free stuff.

Maybe not weird, just extremely lucky. I'm surprised you haven't had an issue with a knife yet given how long you've been on the forums.

And you are absolutely right about being able to save a knife you like for just $20. I guess it just goes further confirm what a shitty attitude I have. I feel that if they knew this was going on with a knife they should be making every effort to recall and fix all of those knives. It just strikes me that if I paid $20 for a knife at the gas station and a week later it fell apart then what did you expect from a $20 knife. When you are paying $270 for a knife any company worth their salt should do the right thing. Isn't a company's reputation worth going that extra yard? It just made me madder when they brought up the old "you modded your knife so were going to charge you for that repair". I just wonder what kind of attitude Spyderco is going to have when they start getting those Paisans with the lock bar problem. Most knife guys are not going to be able to resist pulling out the old torx wrenches and start screwing and unscrewing parts to see if they can adjust it so it works. I sure as Hell would. Is Spyderco going to charge everybody who just paid $520 for a screwed up knife just because there's evidence that it has been opened. If they do I predict the rapid downhill fall of any Spyderco knives that cost over $125. By the way, Thank you for trying to understand where I am coming from here. I really am not a whiner-I've just got sort of a short fuse on stuff like this.

My advice is to let it go. Spyderco got your $20, but now it feels like you are letting them impact your quality of life.
