Buying from smoker/nonsmokers?

Usually a quick wipe down will do it, but this one was WAY different! Almost like a bad joke - it was so bad.

Have to resurrect this thread because I just received a micarta handled knife that reeks of cigarettes.
Pretty annoying.

I used to smoke constantly. Never used to think about it. But smoke isn't the worst. I bought a nice leather briefcase -- that reeked of mothballs. I went to a lot of trouble to deodorize it. But nothing worked. I could not stand having it in the house. Tossed it out.

I don't mind, unless it's extreme, which would be the case for a variety of odors other than cigarette smoke.

What I do mind, extreme or not, is the presence of animal hair, blood or other unknown organic matter on the knife or in the package in which it is shipped. That to me indicates a shipper who does not care about the potential for health concerns of people they ship to.

Yes, smokers should really say "your knife, sheath, and Tek-Lok will smell like death itself" for the interest of full disclosure. I mean, if I wiped a knife on a skunk's butt and mailed it to someone, I'd probably say something.

It is a bummer if the leather sheath or pouch smells like an ashtray and the seller did not let anyone know they smoked.

I love the knives and pouches I get from Tony and Reese. Mmmmmm Tobaccy :D (quit 3.5 years ago)
I still smoke my cancer sticks everynow and then (padron) when possible or hoya de nicaragua. , i am with you on that one, i love the smell on the knives and pouches i get from the wilfred works, smells like left over coffee ground, ash and tobaccooo

It does not bother me at all.

LOL I thought I was alone. I Got a knife from a maker that happened to come in a padded knife case. The smell punched me in the face when I opened the box. The padded case wreaked something awful. It finally aired out its stank after about 6-8 months of just sitting in a drawer. Quit six years ago.

Mothball smell is terrible too.

Mold/mildew smell and it's time to repurpose. Maybe a door jam for the barn man-door?

I have never smoked cigarettes. If I bought a knife that smelled strongly of butts I would de- reek it. It would not be a big deal to me.
That is my opinion on this subject.

It's one thing to wipe it down with soapy water and it's gone. But, when Odorban, Scent Killer, or Dawn has no effect at all - there is an issue!!

I just received a CRKT hissatsu from someone, a fixed blade with a rubber type handle and plastic sheath, and they smell disgusting. It is not just on the blade which would
be easy to clean, as you could imagine. It has contaminated the other porous materials. I soaked and scrubbed them 3x each in hot soapy dishwater and the smell remains.

The worst knife I ever received was a
Gayle Bradley 1.
It reeked of cigarettes.

I washed it with hot water, Dawn dish soap
and a toothbrush.

Still smelled like a ashtray.

Did a complete tear down and in the Sonic cleaner with Simple Green.

Water turned Tea color.

Rinse and dry... No more smell.
