Buying toys online to make yourself feel good.

Lack of restraint

Well, I restrained myself by staying in school for 19 years to get a law degree, passing the bar exam on the first try, getting a job, getting married and having kids - in that order. Additional restraint was demonstrated when I paid off my home mortgage, have never had a car payment in my entire life because I always pay cash for used cars, and when I worked my tail off to get 100% completely out of debt. No loans, no debt, no nothing. Why did I restrain myself for so long? In part so I could afford to buy any knives, guns, MTs, flashlights and other toys that I dang well wanted.

And btw, even when I was on vacation recently for 10 days, the unrestrained shopping continued. Waiting for me when I got home was my 2nd dark green Para 2 in CTS-204P steel, orange Dragonfly 2 and insanely bright Fenix PD35 light. Its good to be Powernoodle.

That would definitely make coming home from vacation a lot less crappy.

The way I see it, we're all adults, if you're not hurting anyone then do whatever you want with your money.

No--not really anymore

Once I got my EDC set up rounded out there really isn't a need---bought one of those 154CM Gators about 2 years ago to see if Gerber was still worthwhile

Currently plotting the purchase of 2 or 3 more pairs of Redwing boots and a Colt 6920. Maybe MAYBE a Citizen Skyhawk somewhere down the road but I just started wearing my old watch after 3 years of not wearing a watch at all---so maybe not. Been mostly upgrading my wardrobe and gun collection----neither is cheap to do.

The male equivalent to the shopping mall - I love it! And I have a "potential" use for everything I purchase!...Cheers.

It's nice when I realized that I get the same rush from buying a $4 deck of Bicycle cards as I do from a $200 Benchmade, Spyderco or ZT. I've added about 20 decks of cards this summer. Weird? I guess, but there are some neat designs out there, and the Magician crowd keeps a healthy market for some beatiful and decadent decks of cards. Some are a bit more, and that's fine. I'm about to pick up a "Cthulhu / Steampunk" deck that is just wild. Theory11, Arcana, Ellusionist are some groups that produce some excellent stuff.

To help avoid onnline impulse buys I will add an item to my shopping cart and come back to it the next day, if I really have to have it ill buy it but more often the not I end up realizing that I don't really want it that bad and I end up saving myself from wasting money.

Of course it feels good. Just like purchasing anything else you want, wanted or others envy. It makes you feel like you accomplished something, you have something to show for your efforts at work or whatever.

Everybody does it in one way or another, even Buddhist take a sense of accomplishment in what they have "achieved" by having nothing. It's fulfillment in satisfying some goal of meaning to you.

When I was a kid all it took was a new beer can I didn't have. Now I enjoy scouring the internet for old balisongs and other knives at a price I can afford. They are almost as pointless as those beer cans beyond the sense of "I don't have that one yet."

And I've been known to buy a beer can on ebay from time to time.

Too much. Kinda curtailed it now. Being unemployed will help fix the problem.

Here's why I did: Bi Polar untreated. Bad. Depression especially will cause people to seek stuff to make them happy. Doesn't work, or not for long, so back online we go. It's just a reality. Getting a bit of help in the Psychiatric arena helped me a lot, but the tendency is still there when I feel crappy.

Some folks do it for other reasons. Some folks are just accumulators of stuff, or addicted to the fun of buying so easy, or whatever.

That's just my story.

I used to worry about this too, PN. I'd swear off purchases and focus on collecting American currency, which in end, I'd end up using for more purchases.

I flyfish, shoot traditional archery, play guitar in a band, and tinker with amateur gunsmithing -- there might be a few knives in my stable also. My Son is almost 13 now, and is sharing a lot of these things. That helps rationalize it some for me, but all in all, considering we are all destined to fill an urn perhaps to be sprinkled somewhere, or take up space in the clay, I now say f@ck it, life is too short not to have fun things around. Especially when you've worked hard, paid your dues, make a decent living, and watch out for family first.

If that makes us materialistic, meh, I for one have been called worse. Thus I will proclaim, "buy on, you crazy diamond."

Jimh- Not to derail things but "You fight on!". My ex wife was Bi Polar and REFUSED any and all attempts at help. She ended our marriage in pursuit of bigger and better things. It is a disease just like any other, not your fault but you can fight it.

Professor,
:) When my sone was 10yr old he got interested in airsoft. I had a couple of expensive precision rifles. I sold them and most of the money went into nice airsoft rifles and protection gear. His friends came over on Saturdays and we had battles for hours. I would NOT give up those memories to have my rifles back.

I'm glad I'm not an impulsive buyer. Everything I buy has a purpose. Take the 10lb gummy bear I just ordered, it's heavy enough to be a self defense weapon, could be emergency rations, used as bait for dead fall traps for small game, or impromptu ballistics gel.

Bill, thanks. Yeah, I'm not giving up. I have a good life, and I want to enjoy it. An amazing wife of 21 years, an amazing 6 yr old son, and too much to let it go to waste. Still tough, but encouragement from good folks like you reminds me to keep my chin up!

What I wouldn't give for a 10lb gummy bear!

Having spent a good chunk of my mental energy the last few days debating the merits of a Ebony Black vs Black Crackle Zippo for my new EDC (already own about 40+ lighters) I have to say, this thread couldn't be more on point.

I'll be sure to post a pic when I make my decision ;)
