I just noticed on knifecenter's news blog about the blade show that they mention Kershaw had previewed a new high-end knife called the Cadre. It sounds very interesting. Does anyone have any info regarding this knife?

I'm not sure whether it's okay to post a link to the blog or not but you can just go to knifecenter's page and then click on News Blog. It should be on the first page of the blog.

Anybody know anything about it, or is it hush, hush for now?

Thanks. Heath

cadre |ˈkadrē; ˈkäd-; -ˌrā|
noun
a small group of people specially trained for a particular purpose or profession

Here is what it said.............................

Kershaw previewed their OD-1 Flipper knife that has a cool, but
complicated, mechanism. it has G10 on one side of the handle, and
stainless steel on the other.
They are also introducing another new flipper knife called the Zing–
it will be available in orange and black, and is designed by RJ
Martin. No good delivery information at this time on either of these
models.

Kershaw will have a black version of the RAM available sooner than
later. They will also introduce a new Ken Onion knife called the Rat
Pack.. It has a nice swell to the handle, and fits your hand nicely.

Lastly, Kershaw previewed a knife tentatively called the Cadre. It
uses amazing 3-D design technology and over-the-top materials. If it
gets made it will be limited in qty and high in price–both figures
in the 4-500 range.

Ah yes the Cadre. Well the Cadre was a last minute concept we put together prior to the Show. This was the first proto, and I just wished we had a bit more time for a 2nd one, as the geometry was slightly off. The concept was more playing with the idea of blade "sculpting". We wanted to push the envelope with an art design and at the same time use the latest materials available.

As you can see, there was an incredible amount of machine work with this piece.

Spec's include
CPM-110V blade steel
3-D machined Titanium Frame Lock

We are on the fence on whether to produce the 500 pieces we promised, but we will have to see. Will greatly enjoy hearing your feedback (good or bad).

Couple of images for you:

holy crap@! that looks amazing! i definitely want one. would need at least tip up drilling though. (not sure if i could carry this one). the first pick looks like the blade grind is a different almost coppery color and it looks awesome. the handle looks comfortable, but i am not sure it lives up to the craziness of the blade design, if this is meant to be an artful piece and not so much a super heavy duty carry knife, i would say try some sculpturing on the blade machining out some sort of complementary pattern out of the handle. but this looks like a winner. you guys are always raising the bar.

out of curiosity cause i didnt notice....whats the opening method? speed-safe? don't see a flipper or thumb studs. did i over look something?

It's a very smooth manual folder. You open it one handed via the geometry of the spine (should have taken shots of that).

Hey and if nothing else Vasilli will be happy with our blade steel with this one.:D

ah. well also just a color idea, i would play around with a deep rich burgundy handle with the coppery section on the blade like the first shot. mmmmmm nice

The deeper and darker the colors the better. I'm not real big on the light blues. I do love the blade and handle shape. I could take or leave the machined sections on the blade.

However, I'll buy one any way I can get it... good job Kershaw

What are the size and thickness spec's? Just not sure about the sculpted blade, although it does give it a unique look. I do like the blade shape, wharncliffe w/belly,:thumbup:, and could live with the sculpture. Yeah, I would spend the money for one!:D:D

I like it except for the recessed machine areas on the blade.... that looks like a place for "stuff" to accumulate. I guess you could call them "blood grooves" and add a glass breaker, uh I mean "skull crusher". But, I would stick to the design as it stands. very nice and the steel is great

i am not sure everyone understands the point of this blade. if i understand you thomas, this entire project came about because of the sculpting on the blade. im not sure square designs are all that are possible, but i would say diagonals or some sort of pattern would come across nicely. i think its something no one else id doing and that makes it worth a look. also, i would match whatever patterns tat are sculpted into the blade into the pocket clip. nice.

At least for me with this project is/was about doing something different, and opening up the possibility of an art/performance category. You see it a bit on the custom side, but we thought to give it a go on the production side. It's about discovering the possibilities in the factory, and bringing a blade/knife into places that haven't been explored before. Like with any art, personal tastes will apply, but the idea here was push a piece to the limit. This was by far the most difficult knife we have ever produced.

OK, I've set here for the past 30 minutes looking at this knife and now the blade indentions are starting to grow on me. What I really like though is the blade shape, with the belly it has. I would love to hear that it is a 3.75" to 4.0" blade!

and thats why we keep coming back :). btw, if by chance this doesn't get produced, please consider something with the bellied wharncliffe. sick design for a blade.

Not having one in front of me cutter17, yes this was a full sized folder, I'm guessing a 3.75" blade.

The recessed machine area's (sculpting) is what the Cadre is all about. It's about taking the latest greatest steel, and processing it in a way that eyes have rarely seen. We can make a standard knife whenever we want. Just wasn't the goal with this project.

If the art and performance was the goal, you nailed it. The knife is beautiful (and I agree that a deep Burgundy would look great) and having CPM-110V is definitely "top shelf"! Excellent!
