California Bush Bash IV. October 22-24, 2010

I'm up for the friction fire contest, although we'll need a prize. I'll dig around in my knife drawer and see if there's something I'm willing to part with for the greater good.

Sound like a good idea just hope all wont be wet.. Still dont trust the weatherman. So the weather looks like Ray???
Well atlist my car starts every time so there. Sound like we are going to have some fun as always.

Okay, after much hand wringing I picked out first prize for the friction fire contest. It's a little David Farmer EDC I picked up in trade a while back. Only reason I picked this is because I seem to have a slew of knives in this size range. Sweet little blade.

Edit: FYI - before I picked a knife I got a fire going using the bow drill technique for the first time. I plan on keeping the Farmer. ;)

Me like that knife better start practicing.... No reason Mike should have or Jason should keep it..

Okay, to go along with my new tent, I got a new car-camping sleeping bag. My 20 degree coleman bag was not only freaking freezing in anything under 50 degrees, but it was too short for me and I ripped it at the zipper by my feet the last time I used it.

I ended up getting another cheapy. I want to spend real money on a lightweight backpacking bag one of these days, but this one is real big and should be warm. Perfect for car camping. This is the one I got: http://www.amazon.com/Wenzel-Tundra...eeping/dp/B000ETTODQ/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top It was $65 earlier, so hopefully $41.59 with no tax and free shipping is a good deal. :) We'll see if it was worth it.

Looks like a good choice. Oversized is the way to go for car camping.

My 20 degree coleman bag was not only freaking freezing in anything under 50 degrees...

It's funny how acclimated the body gets to a certain climate, and how long it takes to readjust to ranges outside of the comfort zone. Being in SoCal we just aren't exposed to cold the vast majority of the year. I recently woke up to a chilly morning, checked the temp, and it was 68 degrees in the house. For a second I thought about turning the heater on but grabbed a light jacket instead. 68 and I was cold...what the hell!!! A few years back I camped six nights at Bryce Canyon NP, and about half way through my body got okay with the colder weather. Don't know how much is physiological and how much is psychological but eventually we adjust. Until then bring extra blankets.

If you have room, I would bring both bags. You can always use the old one as a quilt or even double the bags if it gets real cold. On an extremely cold night, you can also use the old one to keep your back warm while you're sitting around the fire.

ok my 16 year old niece wants to come camping as well and she is a city girl lol. She wants to know if there would be any other girls her age that going to come camping..
She need another smart person to talk to... After all everyone knows that a 16 year old girl are the smartest out there. after that its all down hill lol.. Lets not even mention how smart boys are lol... So is anyone thinking about comming on the Bush Bash and has a Daughter that wants to come bring her over.. So there would be more then one rolling her eyes at us when we make fire or tell tall tales around the camp fire lol.

Yeah, the last two Bush Bashes I was just way too cold. I had a really hard time sleeping the first nights. I guess I'm spoiled by a constant 77 degrees here in my house.

It's a good idea to bring the other sleeping bag. I may do that. I also got a wool blanket for this. They sell some at Harbor Freight for $10. That, and/or the other sleeping bag, ought to work nicely to provide better insulation on my air matress. Apparently air mattresses aren't the best when it comes to camping in the cold. I guess it has something to do with all that cold air beneath you sucking out all your warmth. heheh. I didn't think of that before.

Sasha, just tell her that the weirdest person attending will probably be you. That way she'll have an idea of just how bad it could be. :)

You wouldn't like my house: I keep it in the low 60s. During Rochester, NY winters my roommates called me "The Polar Bear" because I slept with the window open....

Mike and you more then likely are right about me being the weirdest but im the most fun guy too lol. I never turn the heater on in the house.. I like the cold and dont like the smell of the heater. Mike if you get too cold just ask jason to share the tent with you...
Dave are you going to join us??

I am hoping to participate. It depends upon whether I can get my LA work schedule to coincide with that weekend. I'm certainly trying. It would be great to see everyone again.

When are you going to have Bushbash closer to LA???
I wish I could go this time but I forgot to plan for it... if it was closer it would be different...

Sasha, what about that backpacking trip you wanted to plan?

I'm thinking of bringing my dog if you guys don't mind. He's friendly and I'll keep him from running around best I can.

Ray you can bring bear anytime. I dont mind what so ever if you let him run around.
I wanted to go on a backpacking trip but hurt my knee again so walking was out for a couple of months. As for next bush bash. Its not much closer but i would like to do it in the desert. There would be more places to hike and we could practice desert survivl.
They might open more areas in the angeles forest in the next two months... That would make a great 2 day backpacking trip close to home.
