Camp Knife Challenge Results!!!!!

Thanks to Pitdog for the inspiration.

Several thanks to each of the Makers. No Maker = No Joy!;)

And a hundred thanks to The Author.:D:D:thumbup::thumbup:

I actually read this review 3 times. Something I really, well, never do. There's a lot of useful and interesting detail there. You clearly spent many hours on this and put a lot of thought into it. I almost feel I was right there, helping you during each test.

Not a single bad knife in the bunch, and a test methodology I can swing to my own preferences. I surely did not expect this, and I very much appreciate it.

I suppose a real collector would now seek out a copy of each and every one of these fine knives.;)

Sharp and thin works best, who'd a thunk it.

Fantastic review, writing and photography

Brian, what were the specs on the Laconico. I dont think I ever saw a thickness or length. Thanks brother

Brian, thanks, and props, for putting all the work into this. I really wasn't expecting it to be this in depth, particularly in the Fit and Finish section. There was loads of stuff(however un-important to the overall rating of a knife) that I would never notice in a knife, being that I'm not a maker.

Thanks to all the makers as well, for putting themselves on the spot, and delivering some unreal blades.

Awesome work, …truly an epic review.

Nicely done my friend.

And my thanks to everyone involved,

…this turn out to be a great project. :)

Congratulations all around on a fantastic idea and review. Congratulations also to the makers who participated. I really appreciate the time and effort that went into planning and executing this test. I've learned a lot and agree that this thread is tops. There is a lot of good information here and it is interesting to see how different knife designs handle particular tasks.

Very impressive review! Thanks to you for taking the time and to the makers for participating. Now, I need to make some money to buy one or more of them!!

Outstanding work and write up Brian

Thanks for doing this, great stuff!

Thanks to Andy from me for using my burlap laminate on his entry. Way cool!:)

I have no t yet read it completely but I have to say THANK YOU SIR! Taking time to test and write at this level is true commitment. Now back to reading.

wow... great review Brian.. very impressive man... it was well written and to the point, and the pics were amazing too.. it must have been fun to get to handle so many different knives, by so many of our own local(BF) talent...:)

many thanks to Pitdog and all of the makers who participated... i'm definitely looking forward to another one of these in the future...:)

Great review Brian. Thanks to all who submitted knives and especially to Brian for the time he took to test them all and to post the results.

I can't believe how long it took me to read all of that!

Well worth it and now I want to buy something...

All I can say is WOW! Best post in ages..
Very informative and a great job done by everyone involved.

What are the chances of making this a sticky? Then when a new guy asks which should be his first custom, or whats the best camp knife, he could be pointed here.

Brian, what were the specs on the Laconico. I dont think I ever saw a thickness or length. Thanks brother

The first post on Ray's knife said 3/16" O1. But, there was no length or anything. I just measured it to be 6.5" blade, and 11.25" overall.

What are the chances of making this a sticky? Then when a new guy asks which should be his first custom, or whats the best camp knife, he could be pointed here.

I have no control over that. I am just a lowly member :D

 You were a lowly member. Now you are a high profile reviewer of custom knives.

Prepare for the paparazzi.:)

Thanks Brian for doing such an in depth and through review. Fair and honest...somethings get left out in reviews like you said and you were very precise in what you wrote.
Thank you for your time...which is just as valuable as any of the knives tested!

Thanks to Pit for the idea and thanks to my fellow makers for bringing their A game!

Sincere thanks to Pit, the very talented custom makers, and Brian for sharing his thoughts and knowledge. This has been a fun ride!

As has already been said, outstanding work by everyone involved, particularly Mr. Andrews. The knives included represent many different styles and preferences and hopefully each maker learned something in order to improve their craft.

One question though. Did Rick lose points for being too sharp?

As others have said, this thread is EPIC and will undoubtedly impact many wallets in the near future. Thanks again to Brian for putting in the time to do the review and post such a thorough and incredible review.

I know it has been mentioned, but did anyone actually email/PM Spark about doing calendars?

I know I've already posted in this thread but I wanted to express my thanks again. I did learn a lot about what would make a better Camp Knife. I think my design is okay and I'll be making more of that same pattern but I will likely lengthen the blade to make a better chopper. I'll also thin out the cutting edge a bit to make a better slicer. As with all things in knifemaking there are comprimises and the size was mine. I should have gone with a longer blade for this particular challenge.

I Like the handle that I used on this pattern but I can certainly see the advantages of a handle like Rick used. It allows for a wider variety of grips for a wider variety of hand sizes. I think that the handle I used forces the user into one particular grip without allowing the user to vary the grip for the task at hand.

Lot's to learn here.

Thanks again,
SDS
