"camp" security

In a serious societal collapse situation there really are no good answers. The best would be to already have a retreat. The woods are better than nothing, but one thing I've not seen addressed is the probability that lots of idiots who don't even have Boy Scout-level skills might think it is a good idea to go into the woods to survive. With probably hundreds of thousands of unskilled people going into the woods and trying to make campfires, it is likely that there will be numerous forrest fires and no one to stop them.

Yep, I thought about that happening as well. Best case scenario is that luck is on your side and they are downwind of you.

IMO,

"The Woods" will be a very dangerous and hungry place to be for very long. You can last about two weeks on what you carry on your back before you will be on starvation rations.

Most people already know they can't survive there and are conditioned to depend upon govt to feed, clothe, and bind their wounds. After all it is their right, they pay taxes, somebody ought to do something about MY PAIN... They will stay put and whine, complain, and riot. Whineing works, at least most of the time.

Farmland is where actual food is produced. Cattle, sheep, pigs, chickens, corn, wheat, etc. These are real food, not roots and rats. If society ever collapses then the farmer will be king and farmland will be fought over.

Head into the hills if you must but historically that is a last ditch and short lived escape. To do so and not be heavily armed, and I'm talking at least a Glock and AR-15 (personal choices) then you are asking to become somebodies lunch. Mac

Rant in little text:
Actually, your average person can survive out in the wild for a lot longer then 2 weeks, I've done so for over summer vacation (10 weeks) with nothing but the clothes on my back.. it's not THAT difficult

Your absolutly correct about the farmlands being fought over in time of crisis, but you don't need cows and corn to survive.

water is easy to get, and dispite the risks of drinking unfiltered / unpurified water, it's easy to find. Bugs, fish, snakes, birds, mammals are all (mostly) edible, and sooner or later an untrained person will figure out how to catch food. and EVERYONE has seen some cheesy commercial or cartoon that spoofs making a fire with a bow, and it won't require a degree in rocket science to figure out the rest of it.

My point is, humans are resourceful.. If we were not, we wouldn't be here right now. While the sheeple my have a hard time scraping together a way to survive, most of them will survive.

It's the knowledge that seperates those who are prepared, from those who are not.
It's the gear that makes the trip easier.

And when people are struggling to survive, it's your moral obligation to help, because in a large scale incident (lets say, yellowstone blows up) Government aid could be MONTHS down the line.
You don't need to give your gear to help others... You don't need to feed them, or stay with them. Light them a fire, show them how to make snares, tell them to boil water to purify it... show them the basics of building a shelter.. THAT is the obligation you have... to use your knowledge to help others...

For example, lets say your in a car accident, and your seriously injured on the side of the road with the ambulence is 30 minutes away. An off duty paramedic drives by, he's got his first responder kit in the car, he knows how to help you.. but he takes the "oh F%^& it, I'm off duty" state of mind, and drives off. You die... You could have lived, had he used his training to help you.

Back on topic.. I picked up 2 tripwire kits that trigger glowsticks. They'll also make nice triggers for 'Nam style traps for hunting larger game.

i think this is a pretty interesting thread

since it is a little far fetched i am gunna say some things most people dont have

i would definatly ge an AP(anti-personal)sensor, motion detector. the AP for knowing about people and the motion for animals-hunting. a tranq. gun(preferably a rifle and a small pistol), since you dont wanna harm anyone. i would sent up a trip wire attached to some kind of alarm system. i would also string some rope that would make it easier to get up a tree were i would make a camo kind of hiding place for my stuff. face paint also, so you blend in better. i would make a pitfall close to were i would usually be just in case someone manages to sneak up on me, and hope i dont fall in. also a GPS so i dont get lost in my frequent adventures into the wilderness.

as for my shelter i would lash togather some sort of mesh of sticks, then i would put it over my tent, then cover it with leaves and twigs. make it look natural.

as food goes i think a gun would be most helpfull, yet they tend to make a rather lound BANG when you shoot them so a silencer would be good, then again they deteriorate, so another one would also be good. a knife, of course. i would prefer a large busse becasue i hear they are made very good and they are a combat and survival knife.

smoke grenade, if i want to raid my neighboor's camp or if i want to use it on an invader.

i would try to befreind anotehr person there with me becasue two people are strong then one and two brains are better than one. although when food gets scarce i would not be hesitant to break ties.

On the topic of partnering up, I just finshed "Tunnel in the Sky" by Robert Heinlen (sp?). Covers some of the topics discused here. A quick and fun read.

Tunnel in the sky is a good read. I dont know about showing people on how to survive if tshtf. I guess I may be alittle less trusting of people sometimes. Whats to stop the people who you are helping from turning and deciding that they need your gear more than you do.

if he steals my gear i hunt him down put a tranq. shot in him and then he finds himself far-far away from were he was before :)

darn if he stole my gear he would have my tranq. gun

;) A good example as to why you never, ever carry all your gear in an easy carry, easier to steal, bag/pack.

a little far fetched

Just a little

How's about some 100# test monofiliment secured to trees, ankle high?
If you want to hear more than the thump of a body landing and the following curse, you could hang some cans with a pebble or three in it, on the mono.

I'd love to write more but I have to go work on my punji pit.
;)

Then string up some true mono wire. Those of you who have read William Gibson will know what I mean.

Dagnabbit you're not supposed to mention the AW's on the 'net!
Turn in your tinfoil!

Let's say, in theory, SHTF in the form of a WMD attack by someone.

We're forced to bug out into the woods.. and regardless if your constantly moving, or if you set up a Perm. camp, you need to deal with the threat of people seeing your gear, your skill, your camp and wanting to take that for thier own....

How do you secure your camp? I'm looking (preferably) for nonlethal means.

Use a bivy sack or a small one man tent in green or olive drab covered with vegetation while you sleep. Make small fires of dry wood and never stay in the same place twice. And above all, leave no trace such as ashes, trash, uncovered latrine pits, etc.

For a shelter, I would try and find a tree with a semi-hollow trunk. (As seen in The Hunted) Set up a perimeter, (Preferably somewhere surrounded by a lot of brush/foliage, so you can hear, but not too much so someone suspects anything) with the shelter on one side, and a "trip-wire system" made from nature. As in an arched stick, between an entrance to your perimeter, so if someone stepped through it would be knocked over. Or break a branch off of somewhere and put in in or on a bush to another entrance to your perimeter so when an intruder steps through it falls, ect. You could also use paracord surrounded by dead leaves so the thump will alarm you. Wear some type of camo, for hunting purposes as well. I would bring an AR-15, a H&K USP, and some type of tranq pistol. Knives as well, such as a Busse, CRK, or Nimravus. A zippo as well if you need it for any reason, distraction ect. A Smoke grenade. The important things would be a knife, paracord, camo.

id build a large scout pit, and just put my gear and bed inside. http://www.trackertrail.com/survival/shelter/scoutpit/ygas.html
a good idea i heard on a gun furum, is to buy a bunch of mosin nagant m44s and mount red dot sites on them, maybe take the bayonet off, and then stash them with tons of surplus ammo and a couple good cleaning kits. then you can just patrol your camp with your freinds and family, and possibly build some fortifications out of logs around it. most people wouldnt try anything to get in. of course that would be an extremely long term solution. still having a big stash of m44s isnt a bad idea.

elvenbladesmith07,

LOL, I was about to post that link!

And good call on the surplus rifles. My woods rifle is a Yugo M-48A (yes, I am a gun guy). I need more 8mm rifles... ;)

And don't forget a good .22 rifle (10/22).

Another lesson from The Hunted: mud and charcoal make for wonderful personal camo, on skin and clothing. Though, whomever you're hiding from will smell tilled dirt and campfires :p

its precisely for this kind of scenario that its important to GET RICH NOW so you can hire ninjas to guard the entry points to your self sustaining underground fortress.

You use a hammock to sleep 20 ft up in the trees, usefull also because much fewer mosquitos up there.
