"camp" security

Interesting thread. My first thought re: New Orleans would be to stay away from the shelters... Second thought would be to get a good group together (if possible...)

The point that breaks most people who are doing the E&E thing is mental. At some point they just give up and start taking chances and risks out of sheer exhaustion and a broken will to maintain the kind of discipline necessary.

If you are planning to survive in the same wilderness in which armed people are looking for you or would do you harm you must never be seen.

The classic example of this type of (nightmare) lifestyle was that bomber guy who hid out in the mountains while lots of LEO's were looking for him long term. He finally got caught, not in a stealth camp, but raiding a dumpster for food becuase he was tired and hungry from living like a bat for so long.

You should look into "the way of the scout" by Tom Brown Jr. Its a pretty good book.

I like the distributions of gear idea, that way all your camp really needs to be is 6ft, land enough for you to sleep. I would have a buried ditch so that the top of my stomach was carefully just under the forest floor line. In the everglades, perhaps on top of the hammocks (island not the sleeping thing), although I haven't had much experience out in the thick of the glades.

I would camouflage myself carefully, use charcoal to cover up my scent, and sleep with barely my head poking out. I would do this in the middle of the most obvious place too, where I might count on the "they wouldn't be here" factor.

also, I would put carefully placed sticks with indentations under them so they break loudly and easily. Someone doing a good stalking technique would be able to go around that however.

Granted all this has flaws I know, but I think it could work provided you aren't being followed by trackers, ninjas, native americans, or velociraptors :D

I just came upon this thread and in light of what has just occurred after Hurricane Katrina it shows that it does not take a WMD hit for things to go really bad. I saw many good ideas listed that would be ideal for a disciplined military unit operating behind enemy lines. Unfortunately nowadays we are probably talking about defending your family (children)in a heavily urban setting (especially for WMD's) against roving packs of savages who are looting, raping, and murdering for the fun of it. You can't just hide, and there is no non-lethal option that is going to protect you. Be prepared to do what ever is necessary until help arrives. A reliable, military caliber rifle is step number one. It doesn't matter how well thought out and equipped your survival gear setup is if a bunch of thugs can simply take it away from you. This is a truly terrible reality check that things have come to this. :(

This is what I had in mind when I started this thread.. Knowing how to E&E if your shot down over vietnam is one thing... Keeping your butt, and your loved ones butts safe and secure after something like Katrina, or a WMD is another

Good god yes stay away from shelters.. Before, during, and after.. If everyone there is starving.. so are you, and in most cases, you can't leave after the disaster.

I appreciate what your say'ing, but I'm not sure what you are suggesting as a proactive course of action. This scenario just unfolded in New Orleans and no one was killing deer or fishing. There were no organized well armed locals, they evacuated. What was left was a disorganized rabble of thugs. That is what you have to deal with if you get stuck in the area. Not a very pleasant reality at all

Because most of the people in N.O. wanted to be handed thier food, water, ice, etc. Think about it, all those people who went 5+ days without relief.. if half of them actually made an effort... actually worked for survival, everyone would have been better off. (and yes, I know there are a lot of heros, and good people in that area after these events.. I've met a few, but I've also seen and heard of hundreds of people who want to sit on thier bum and hold thier hand out.)

I believe someone who knows that you have a concealed weapon is less likely to provoke you.

I carry 2, usually... and when I'm out in the woods, 1 is always visible. and your right.. carrying 1 visible has prevented situations that, imho, would have taken place had they not known I was carrying.

I was going to stay out of this one due to the "tin foil hat" thing.

Ouch Pict... ouch. I figured a WMD attack would have been a decent scenario to use to justify the topic.. But given recent events, even Katrina would work (shootings, rapings, etc) or, if you prefer the "Tin foil hat" scenarios then lets examine the "aliens are attacking, and I must escape the anal probing" scenario :p :p j/k

Never known before.. Now never to be forgotten.
