Camping thread

just tidbits-

I've done a lot of camping with a popup tent trailer. I've done a lot of camping just out of the trunk of the car. I've done a lot of camping without any vehicle, i.e. backpacking. I've never done the kind of camping where you have to chop down a forest with a Busse in the process. The tent trailer is very convenient if you don't mind towing the thing around.

I found that the Coleman butane stoves and butane lantern are great, much less trouble than the white gas versions. We bought a collapsible tripod to hold up the lantern and it works great in places with not big trees handy.

I started making a master packing list on my computer many years ago. I have everything on the list for camping, backpacking, whatever. Before a trip I make a copy of the list and edit it for the upcoming trip, print it out, and check off everything as I pack.

zip lock bags are great for packing. We started backpacking using iodine tablets to sterilize stream water but switched to pumps with filters. Of course for car camping we just carry a big jug of water.

We started saving up the spare plastic forks and spoons from takeout restaurants to take for camping.

Did somebody mention grille? A simple metal grille is great for using over a campfire.

This may be more for backpacking- if you carefully study the contents of your local grocery store, you can find various dishes to prepare from boiling water, maybe wiht the addition of a can of chunked chicken or so forth.

Awesome camping trip, now I am thinking of doing something similar with my little girl.

really great post YC. glad you and your boy got to get out. all great pics, but that last pic is one for the scrapbook.
Thank you. That picture will be in a frame on my desk for years to come.

Dang, I was expecting some nice wilderness pics, but man those are even better.
My grin is almost as big as yours and your sons. Thanks for sharing YC.:D
Thank you. He was so excited to sleep in a tent, but I think I was even more excited than he was to take my son camping for the 1st time.

You should. It was a low pressure situation and as expected we didn't make it all night. But it was a good introduction to camping and he's enthusiastic about doing it again. Even though he won't remember the details (or any of it) I will cherish this memory for the rest of my days.

I've camped in a pull behind camper, pop-up camper, and in a tent. The pop-up makes a great compromise between the other two. You still feel the openness of the tent with the convenience of having everything inside. We bought a plastic storage cabinet to keep only our tent camping supplies in. When we get ready to go I simply empty the shelves and we have everything we need for a couple nights except for perishable food, clothes, and drinks. If there is anything we use up on a trip I make sure to restock the cooking supply box when we get back home. It's not a perfect system but one that works for us. There's nothing like sharing the outdoors with your children. I am truly blessed that I got to spend so much time with my first son as he grew up and I'm loving every minute I have with my little one now. I'm not sure how many nights we've camped this year but I enjoyed each regardless of the weather because I was outdoors with my family. Thanks to all of you for sharing pics off your experiences.

can't find any of our camping pictures

but I like your little pull along so much, todd, I showed it to rebecca very cool. thanks for sharing.

Here's a cel-phone pic from our camping trip to the lake last weekend. Thomas had a fit to take Izzie for a walk after
breakfast and she was more than willing to let him think he was in charge.

Great picture!

at that age we had a brindle boxer my mother found along side a logging road...damned thing used to drag me around the yard...

She is very tolerant of him being "in charge" as long as there are no squirrels in sight. Then all bets are off.

i thought i'd post pics from this weekend's camping trip. and also show how we set up for truck (car) camping where we don't really care much about weight and what we bring.:D

everything we need packs nicely into the truck bed:

we bring a giant stand up tent because when you stay more than a night, it gets annoying to stoop over to change clothes and what not. we have a 2 man tent for backpacking/hike in trips.

packing all of your camping gear into these bins makes organizing easy and painless. we have a checklist we go through once every few trips as we run low on things. this way, we don't have to worry about constantly taking things in and out and double checking to make sure it's all there.

i had banana boats two weekends ago for the first time (when i started this thread). the group i was with made them. i had never even heard of 'em. i had mine with mini-marshmallows, choc chips, butterscotch chips and raspberries. pretty good.

my lady decided to upgrade her rig. she wanted a bit more room, and being a girl, wanted a toilet. maiden voyage this weekend....

I haven't been camping in over a year and it's killing me! As soon as the weather cools off down here, I'm making the time to get to my favorite spot. Here's a picture my girlfriend took on one of my last trips. It's me and my dog fly fishing at dusk, but with the lighting it looks like I'm taking a whiz in the lake.

It's a great little state park in a national forest close by. The lake is small enough to fish the whole thing in my kayak, and not many folks use it. Great for quick weekend getaways.
Campsite during daylight:

First clear weekend with lows below 60*, and I'm heading out!
