Camping - what's the best Busse?

Much as I like the NMSFNO and the DSSF for all around use, I don't think one size fits all.

SAR 4 gets my vote! Perfect blade length for an all around camp blade. Big enough to get tough jobs done, small enough to wear on your belt and not mind it one bit!

I don't think one size fits all.

I agree.. the environment/terrain/type of work to be encountered/amount of time spent out, will dictate the tools one will carry and use.
Hard to pin point ONE blade that will be a do it all... I'm sure many of us are still looking for it :) (I know I am!!)

But I think it's fair to say that a sub-6inch and a 9-10inch blade is necessary and will quite adequately cover most of anyone's needs.
Now the fun is deciding WHICH sub-6inch and WHICH 9-10inch blade to get...

I use a large Busse-kin, and just carry the knowledge of how to use it for smaller tasks as opposed to carrying a secondary blade. If I did have a secondary, it would be backup. I just don't need it as I use the larger blade for everything from shelter building to getting fishing tackle ready to go to skinning small game and making traps.

anything between 6 and 10 inches blade length approx will do. Anything less and you will be working hard to chop and anything more will be too large to do small tasks with. An SHBM or BM-E, SHSH, or FSH would be my choice. Any of those with a cut down tang as shown below it would make it more compact with the most cutting surface to overall length.

SFNO sabre grind wins hands down for me.. That sucker can beaten like you stole it and it still is good for smaller task.

I have tried every size and most of the choices mentioned ... they are often "all" great performers ...

You can do delicate work with a big knife if you have the techniques ...

and you can chop with the smaller blades too ...

I have put nearly all the knives I have up against a Basic 9 for comparison to see how they differ ...

and I have tried tasks with the smallest of knives and the largest ...

They can all do the job but they differ in the "time" taken to do it ... and for me the middle ground of performance/weight/speed at the task is found in the range of knives such as the Basic 9 / Camp Tramp/ DFLE / SAR 8 / NMSFNO/ FSH/ BWM LE/ BWM/ which are all excellent choices ... and the Basic 9 is simply the one I choose the most as it is very effective for the weight and I like the benefits of an asymetrical edge.

The use and fun of a Busse blade increases geometrically with each inch of length. Busse blades resemble certain human organs in this aspect. ;)

LOL! I keep telling myself "It's not the size of the knife, it's how you use it".:D

However, if it did come down to it,

Id go with, the,,,,,,,,
