Ok, so twice a year (by twice a year, I don't mean I go camping twice a year, I mean we do this mass camping twice a year), me and my friends go for weekend camping trip, we usually get about 25-40 people to go, and its not a hike, but just a campsite or something, where we pitch tents BBQ, play on guitars and just generally get away from city life, business or any other such worries, it also gives us a chance to just hang with each other because we are now all over the map, and see some people rarely.

Most of the people there well lets just say are somewhat short of being knife enthusiasts. More over lots of them are of female type as well. On top of that, this is a California crowd, you see where I'm going with this? I really don't want to make a scene, or piss them off, or annoy them, after all they are friends and I'm not gonna ditch them because some of them have balls made out of cotton or none at all.
Here is the thing though, we do have fire going we do chop some wood and such. So this would be a really nice place to take a large Busse to get more practice buttoning, etc., you know get some personal growing out of the trip. But because of the crowd that will be well misunderstood or something (also out of those that are more or less camping crowd, none will spend over $50 on a knife unless its a collectible display piece)

So what do you think I should do? Should I just say, I'll be back and head out into the woods with a creepy grin and huge knife?

I do have my UG coming, hopefully it gets here before my camping trip, and that looks like it might not be as scary to them as lets say HOFSH. I'll probably end up just taking it along and cutting a stick or two.

What would you guys do if you were in my shoes?

EDIT: Well the common suggestion is, take a knife. And the best knife suggested to take is the SAR8. But I don't have a SAR8. Therefore if you are willing to let me borrow a user knife for the camping weekend I'd gladly take the knife with me, and goes without questions cover all the shipping costs. Otherwise I do agree SAR8 is the perfect solution to the question, but I can't take it if I don't have it.

Also this is turning out to be a very fun read so far. So lets keep it civil, as not to get this locked.

Is this the only trip you do each year? If not, then leave the big ones at home this time. I think there's a time and place, and even though the "place" seems appropriate, this may not be the right "time".

Eat some food, play your guitar and impress some girls.

Then go on another wood-harvesting trip later in the summer. ;)

Have fun!

Use it as an opportunity so show those who are interested how useful of a tool it is. Maybe they'll shed the misconception that all knives are weapons.

SAR-8 might be a good choice. Long enough to baton and chop, but to me it has a less 'threatening' look compared to other similar sized Busses. Just a thought. :)

+1 :thumbup::cool:

Heck with the Sheeples, I would take my NMFBM and Tank Buster and say the heck with them. ;):D

Show them what they can do as tools. :)

If you do it right it could be a real learning experience for them. :D

I would just take a big ol' Busse. And if anybody says something, I'd help them along a little... "What, are you scared??? <angrily chop wood really hard> That's what I do to chickens."

"Are you still here?"

My friends that matter would all think that was really funny.

Man you need an AK or Ruck on your back, and your FSH on your side. Or like you said just dissapear into the wilderness making all kinds of hacking noises.
Tell them your going where men can be men and sheep are scared. :D

I would only take one, and if anyone asks just tell them it's more practical than a hatchet. I might also take my NMSFNO instead of the CG FBM too. If you only use it the way its intended to be used when it needs to be used most Sheeple won't even take notice.

I tend to find putting my NMFBM in along with other tools like my GFB SFA Axe and a folding Buck Saw and a folding Pruning Saw so that they all look purposful for wood cutting/fire preperation works .... the association of the knife looking "dodgy" as it might do on it's own is dispelled .... and more often than not when they see you go through limbs to logs to sticks to tinder and can see you know what you are doing they are happy to leave you to it or chip in and learn how to do it themselves ....

Once you give them a safety talk/run through on using the Axe .... showing how missed swings need to be allowed for by positioning of your feet .... the wider blade and easier to use NMFBM starts to make sense .... even to Sheeple .... :)

yes sir.

I agree with those that say take it.

I did last year on my float/camping trip with fbm le w/ cult piggy back. I wore a necker the whole time on the float and it was very nice to have while others lost there folders in the river. Was with a bunch of fraternity guys that get together to relive being young and without kids...not my usual crowd but they were a blast :thumbup:

Anyway, I took it, but used it sparingly and appropriately. DIdnt carry it around much or anything just kinda hung in it the tree near the fire. I eventually got questioned about the big knife and gave a quick demo. Minds were changed quickly as you saw the light bulbs go off:D

It s not like your taking an AK :D

Tell'em Charlie Manson is your hero, with a blade in hand. They might not agree, but they wont offer another opinion.

At the risk of sounding sanctimonious, if you don't take it, the sheeple have won again. If it is legal to carry the knife where you will be camping, no one has the right to say a word about it.

If it were me, I would take it and use it as needed. Don't flash it around and don't validate the comments or criticism of anyone who busts your balls over it. Let them have their say and go on using the knife to chop/split wood, set up camp etc. As long as it is in the sheath or being put to work it is a tool.

I have fought this battle for years over firearms and knives alike, and found that though everyone has a right to their opinion, it's still just an opinion. Let them voice it, smile politely and walk away.

Just my 2 cents for what it is worth.

No one "wins again".

I think you can either take every situation as an opportunity to "show 'em all!" something they don't care to know, or you can have a good time with your friends.

Like I said, plan a trip another time when you know you won't be around people who may get uncomfortable. Then you can have your cake and eat it too, so to say.

I didn't mean that he should take the opportunity to "show them all". On the contrary, I was suggesting that he keep a low profile but use the knife for its intended purpose.

I do however feel that, as sportsmen, we are losing ground quickly and a lot of it is our own fault. Every time we do not do something (ie. carrying your chopper on a camping trip) just because someone else thinks that it is wrong or inappropriate we lose more ground.

I have a concealed weapons permit and I carry everywhere it is legal to do so. Not everyone agrees with my doing this but it is not up to them to tell me whether I can do it or not. I don't flash my weapon around and under normal circumstances no one will ever know that it is there. However, should the need arise, it is right where it should be, available for use.

The same goes for a large knife in the woods. I carry it where it is legal and leave it in the sheath until I need it. When I am finished using it, I return it to the sheath.

Maybe I am being bullheaded but I refuse to let anyone tell me what I can or cannot carry as long as it is legal. If my doing so makes them uncomfortable, and I will go out of my way to keep them from being uncomfortable, then they do not have to pitch their tent next to mine.

Again, this is just my opinion.

SACK UP MAN and bring the biggest, baddest knife you can find. Id bring the KZ just to spite them. And I would chop carrots with it. A man needs a big knife to chop wood. You cant do it with anything less. You are camping!!!! Not going to the super market. If they are your friends, then why would they care. Since when is it wrong to bring a knife camping. its the only thing that actually applies to knives. How is it any diff than an axe??
