Camping with sheeple and big Busse blades.

what is all this about a "Californian" crowd? ;) i say bring the big guns!

Whoa Whoa...California crowd. Im in Cali and I take my NMFBM to every camping trip. The problem isnt that your friends are from Cali, its that they are a bunch of PU$$%^$!!

Take a big one for splitting ,if you need wood use it and put it away when done.If you normally woodcarve or whittle bring something for that as well business as usual .

You ask for advice on what you should do, but I think the best I can offer is my thoughts on what I would if I were in your shoes. I would not bring out the big 'uns if that would make things awkward for friends. I can't expect all my friends to love guns and knives as much as I do (heck, I know very few people who do). If I tried to force that on others, I'd be a lonely person. So if it were me, I'd chill, and just enjoy my buds and not bring something out which would interfere with us just enjoying each other. I don't believe that's a compromise - if asked, I tell people straight up what I love and value. Otherwise, I try to keep it a bit to myself and just look for common ground. I think that's what is lacking in society - we fail to look for common ground. Good luck, and I'm wishing you a great time in the outdoors.

Is this the only trip you do each year? If not, then leave the big ones at home this time. I think there's a time and place, and even though the "place" seems appropriate, this may not be the right "time".

Eat some food, play your guitar and impress some girls.

Then go on another wood-harvesting trip later in the summer. ;)

Have fun!

Well that was the plan. After all as I said this isn't really a hike or anything extreme, so bringing a big blade isn't really anywhere close to necessity. Therefore I'd rather avoid all sorts of conflict. And unnecessary alienation from the people that I am in contact with. But I just found myself confronted with the question an I thought it would make for a valid discussion point.

The thing is, I never used a large blade before for camping chores. I would usually pair an ax or hatchet with a mid size blade. So me showing them how its done, well, lets just say will look less then impressive. My reasoning for bringing the blade was so I can get some practice, as I mentioned grow a little bit.

Although here is a conflicting point, if I bring the AK47, I'm sure everybody would love to go at a tree or something, heck I'd love to just go berserk with it on a tree, for no other reason then how awesome that would be. And nobody would protest, matter of fact, they just wouldn't be able to believe that I just took that show piece then went on to crazily smack everything, then wiped it of and it looked new. I'm pretty sure I'd have all of them lined up to abuse it. Same thing happens when the air rifles were introduced, as it seemed fun to plink stuff.

And I only have one fixed blade knife right now, (UG is still on the way, so 2 in time for the trip) its a mean looking coated HOFSH, that would make Rambo weak in the knees. SAR8 looks like a great knife for this, I just don't have one, and would just love to try one. So yeah if anyone has a user SAR8 or any other Busse kin user that is sheeple friendly I'd love to borrow one, I'd pay the shipping both ways. Would be awesome to try other designs then the ones I've already seen.

And I say California crowd, to emphasize my predicament, all of them are California university breed. None of them are crazy extreme but being around wackjobs for 4 years does rub off the wrong way.

About legalities. California isn't as strict about gun/knife laws, granted they are tough on guns with whats legal and whats not. But c'mon the drop test, is a nice test to know your gun passed. No more then 10 rounds in the magazine, if I need more then 3 then I'm in deeper then I should be. And shotguns are still legal, so for SD in my environment I wouldn't look anywhere else. Technically you can get a carry permit here. So no I'm not bashing California.

What annoys me is that fixed blades have to be clearly visible (I'm not talking about LA County, but campsites.) I'd just carry my knife upside down under my left arm or behind my back under the jacket so as not to freak anybody out, but the knife has to be visible by law. If these were people I didn't know I would take the knife without a second thought. And I plan to.

I was thinking going for hike once every two weeks or so this summer, just take one knife with me and some food, walk about the forest built a small fire relax next to it, cook my food, relax some more go home. I'll bring the dogs along and just train them out there. And I don't care what other people are thinking I'm gonna be relaxing. This thing is a bit different, these are the people I hang out with, and they will not say anything but I don't really feel like turning things so they would subconsciously try to avoid me.

I, myself am torn on this one. If it were a bunch of guys drinking beer around a campfire I would say, without hesitation, bring the big ones and teach them. But since this seems to be more of a sing songs around the campfire situation, then some discretion could be used when it came to big knives. I went hunting one time and brought along an RMD and all of the guys there kept commenting on how big that knife was. That was one of the first times I realized most people can't fathom a NMFBM. Just use some common sense and discretion but definitely bring along a big knife.

In order of importance;
1) I'd move
2) Get new friends
3) Buy bigger Busses
4) Burn a GOOD stogie
5) Pour a double shot
6) Repeat 4 and 5 as needed
and NEVER Let the sheeple win

Shame on you for hanging out with people that don't like big knives:D

Take it and have a good time. Don't get drunk and swing it around but show people what a big knife can do when used responsible

Yep...

Sheeples are like a virus that need some good antibiotics IMO... ;)

Screw them and do what you want.

It's a freaking camping trip you know.

Well if you have'nt used your HOGFSH do a bit of reading up on technique and do a bit of practise before you go .... use it to see if the grips are comfortable as well .... you might want to sand down any areas giving you "hot spots" .... no sense getting blisters .... and just use the knife sensibly and you will be fine ....

If your uncomfortable taking it, Id pass. However, if your confident, and just use the knife when it is needed I think it will be fine. This is one of the reasons why I got a character leather sheath for my Mistress. Just looks less like a weapon.

Id bring mine, and just have fun with it. If you have fun and be responsible, people most likely wont care. If they do care, well your probably better off without em. Present yourself like a creep with a big knife and you probably will get bad responses. YMMV

Bring a couple of knives and toss them in the trunk of your car. If the situation merits it, pull one out and teach Busse 101. Car camping is more like a church picnic. I'd carry a folder and keep the hardware in the trunk.

I missed the part about women being along and if your single and trying to score....

don't take the big ones...they might think you are trying to make up for something:D

and not realize the importance and power of such a big tool;):D

Nah, they will see the importance of that big blade when the fire gets going etc.....

That is if they have any brains in their heads at all. ;)

Oh wait we are talking about Calf here aren't we..... ROFL...

Calf and NY sheeples..... :barf:

1-3 will have to wait. (my friends understand my knife thing, because if they didn't they'd have a hard time explaining to me their expensive pens, lighters and watches) there are only about 2 friends that are going on that trip, the others are good acquaintances, comrades if you will, but I don't consider them true friends. So I might be good with friends I got, they are just far away.

3-6 I will do.

Besides you guys, people who like big knives are usually really creepy. I mean seriously unless its a Busse or Busse kin why would you like big blades (just kidding).

Hehe, I'll just do what I feel like when the time comes. But until then, I'm willing to entertain all kind of ideas.

Do what you would normally do camping and dont forget to wear your camo.

There needs to be another California knife get together.

That will scare them real good, I have all kinds of knives but when my Wife saw the NMFBM she said whow what a big knife that is scary!!!!!!!!!!

First of all, sorry to hear about your friends!! :(

Sadly, most of my wife's family is the same. Makes me ill! :barf:

My first "Reflex" thought is that I would want to find other friends - at least in regards to sharing my valued camping and outdoors time with. I don't want to have my camping experiences spoiled by Sheeple. But, that is me.

On the other hand, you have a responsibility here!

I try to do my part to SHOW certain sheeple the values of a good knife as a "TOOL". Sadly, most still don't seem to get it or appreciate it and can still only see knives as VICIOUS weapons of harm and death. :grumpy:

But, "Some" seem to develop a bit more appreciation.

All you can do is continually try to make your best effort to appeal to the reason, rational of certain sheeple (good luck) and keep trying to show how valuable knives are as "TOOLS".

You can't give in and let them win.

Use it as an opportunity so show those who are interested how useful of a tool it is. Maybe they'll shed the misconception that all knives are weapons.

+1

Heck with the Sheeples,.....

Show them what they can do as tools. :)

If you do it right it could be a real learning experience for them. :D

I wouldn't take your whole HORD of INFI or the ones you feel might "Frighten" the poor timid Sheeple. But, take the ones you really need and will use. However, if your needs "Do" dictate needing a big NMFBM, I believe in using the right tool for the job. If an axe or saw would work better, use an axe or saw. But, if you need a couple of other knives for camp, trail, pocket, etc. - TAKE them. Use responsibly and as needed.

Some Busse blades might look a bit "Combat" Rambo to some Sheeple. But, other people might at least appreciate that "YOU" value them as tools. Maybe they can't appreciate them for themselves or their family, but hopefully if you show them right, they can have an appreciation that knives can be TOOLS that have a purpose for many!

I tend to find putting my NMFBM in along with other tools like my GFB SFA Axe and a folding Buck Saw and a folding Pruning Saw so that they all look purposful for wood cutting/fire preperation works .... the association of the knife looking "dodgy" as it might do on it's own is dispelled .... and more often than not when they see you go through limbs to logs to sticks to tinder and can see you know what you are doing they are happy to leave you to it or chip in and learn how to do it themselves ....

+1

Once you give them a safety talk/run through on using the Axe .... showing how missed swings need to be allowed for by positioning of your feet .... the wider blade and easier to use NMFBM starts to make sense .... even to Sheeple .... :)

Sadly, there are some die-hard sheeple out there that just are not too likely to be easily turned to the "Rational" side. :(

At the risk of sounding sanctimonious, if you don't take it, the sheeple have won again. If it is legal to carry the knife where you will be camping, no one has the right to say a word about it.

If it were me, I would take it and use it as needed. Don't flash it around and don't validate the comments or criticism of anyone who busts your balls over it. Let them have their say and go on using the knife to chop/split wood, set up camp etc. As long as it is in the sheath or being put to work it is a tool.

I have fought this battle for years over firearms and knives alike, and found that though everyone has a right to their opinion, it's still just an opinion. Let them voice it, smile politely and walk away.

Just my 2 cents for what it is worth.

EXACTLY!!! +1

I didn't mean that he should take the opportunity to "show them all". On the contrary, I was suggesting that he keep a low profile but use the knife for its intended purpose.

I do however feel that, as sportsmen, we are losing ground quickly and a lot of it is our own fault. Every time we do not do something (ie. carrying your chopper on a camping trip) just because someone else thinks that it is wrong or inappropriate we lose more ground.

I have a concealed weapons permit and I carry everywhere it is legal to do so. Not everyone agrees with my doing this but it is not up to them to tell me whether I can do it or not. I don't flash my weapon around and under normal circumstances no one will ever know that it is there. However, should the need arise, it is right where it should be, available for use.

The same goes for a large knife in the woods. I carry it where it is legal and leave it in the sheath until I need it. When I am finished using it, I return it to the sheath.

Maybe I am being bullheaded but I refuse to let anyone tell me what I can or cannot carry as long as it is legal. If my doing so makes them uncomfortable, and I will go out of my way to keep them from being uncomfortable, then they do not have to pitch their tent next to mine.

Again, this is just my opinion.

I agree..... Mostly.

Unfortunately, the "Majority" rules in this country. States like California have already made carrying many common and useful sized knives illegal. The knife community is LOOSING in California and similar liberal states and cities around this country. If not careful, the ENTIRE country could loose to those who believe knives are more dangerous than useful!

So, there is a pretty be responsibility to YOUR OWN RIGHTS along with hopefully any further help that can be provided to the rest of the knife community to help "EDUCATE" the Sheeple. It can be tricky. But, I feel a constant effort needs to be made to help at least make Sheeple appreciate that knives are important to many and NOT always weapons of harm and death. They CAN BE and VERY often are VERY USEFUL tools.

I disagree with those who see this as a joke and want to SHOVE it in the face of the Sheeple.

Even with showing the Sheeple how useful tools are and can be, there is a HIGH probability you won't turn most of them into knife advocates.

If done right, you might at least get "SOME" of them to appreciate that knives do have a valuable use to many people.

Do it wrong, by flaunting and taunting Sheeple with knives that intimidate them Could VERY well curse the knife community in the long run. People vote for laws one way or another. If enough people fear knives, their elected politicians can pass laws to remove our rights.

Many don't believe this. But, look around. Look at how many cities and states have cracked down on knives around our country. Look at other countries like England and Australia where carrying knives is becoming a MAJOR issue these days.

Good luck.
