Can .45GAP replace .45ACP?

I used the .45ACP in the Army and have stuck with it ever since in civilian life.

Us .45ACP fanatics resisted all 'improvements' which include 40 S&W, 10mm Auto. Of course the majority of the Military has long since switched from .45ACP to 9mm Para.

But to us fans, all replacements were merely highfalutin solutions to nonexistant problems. To us, the good old flying ashtray was the answer to all semi auto manstopper problems.

Enter Glock's .45GAP. At last, a cartridge that looks truly improved. A much shorter casing but generating the same ballistics and performance as .45ACP.

Looks good to me!.........Opinions?

If it is truly equal, it seems it would solve the problem of the .45 cal version of any particular weapon always being slightly larger than its .40 or 9mm counterpart, an irritation to say the least. Of course then there's the issue of availibility -- i like my +p Golder Sabers -- and the issue of having to buy all new guns (or at least new barrels)...

The 45 ACP was never a long round. As I recall there is some history of problems with the round feeding because it was so short and wide. I don't see this as a real special deal. Actually I want a long case that will hold a stack of 3 wadcutter bullets. Imagine the impact of 3 .45 rounds hitting at the same time.

I suppose its theoretically possible that its a replacement for the ACP. I doubt though, that in reality it is. There are just too many ACPs out there and the GAP isn't significantly better (if it really is any better) than the old stand by.

If its not broke.... I am a big .45 fan, 9 is too light and fast but fun to plink, .40 is ok I find the recoil too sharp in most cases, 10mm is not really enjoyable for me to shoot as I find its recoil way too sharp. .45 is a joy to shoot and its ballistics are unmatched, I wouldnt want anything for a defense weapon!

I CAN see the place for .45 GAP. BUT, it will NEVER replace the .45 ACP!! The .45 ACP works just the way it is.

agree, i dont think the acp will ever be replaced. the .40 seems to have replaced the 9mm with most police agencies, but the acp will never go away.

the gap seems to have been intended for people who have trouble with the larger grip of the glock 21, nothing more.

Same performance , shorter case ,and smaller [9mm] frame so it's better for smaller hands .Now that the NYSP and PSP have adopted it it will have a life...In any case there is no difference in performance between the 45 or the 40 or 357sig [and don't give me those stopping power numbers ,on the street they work the same].

Ahh, "NO". I just don't see this happening. I think it will remain an obscure, expensive answer to an alleged "problem" that already has allot of different "solutions". The answer is shot placement and the only real solution for that is practice, just like it has always been and always will be.

...Can I get an Amen brothers?!?! LOL ;)

Glock has finally seen the light of the Robar grip mod, and is going to be offering a new model 21 with a reduced grip profile. They also are supposed to have a large single stack .45ACP on the way. Meanwhile they aren't pouring out new models chambered for GAP.

if that is true, i may have to buy another glock........or two.:D

I shot our Glock Rep's GAP against my 21&30, the GAP seemed to have more felt recoil, snappier in the hand. I'll stick to the 21/30 for a Glock 45. I found the Glock 30 to be one of the most accurate out of the box 45 ACP's I've owned, the Springfield XD45T is the other. The GAP was decent, but not the tack driver the 30 or the XD is.

Copfish: Thanks for the hands-on report.

The shorter case must be loaded to +P capacity to achieved the ballistics of .45ACP. This produces more initial pressure and I guess that would account for the sharper recoil. Accuracy might be affected too.
