How soon we forget.

In a thread with an edited title. Nothing like moving the goalpost when the point is lost.

I don't know what you're talking about. I said I wouldn't edit the title and I didn't. And even though I wasn't as clear as I should have been and lost a few votes as a result, I accepted my mistake, left the title alone, and won the point anyway . . . in a landslide, I might add.

Better luck next time.

That's about the only way you can do it, Scurvy. Problem is, once you've done that, it's not a real folder anymore.

Using FortyTwoBlades brilliant and correct definition of a fixed-blade, the Atwood FrankenSlice is a folder:

One might argue that a fixed blade could be defined as a knife in which the blade and the handle ("user interface") remain in consistent spacial relationship throughout all stages of its use and carry. That is to say that they are fixed in space relative to one another and no part of its operation breaks that spacial relationship.

Next! :)

But using that definition, what about the Harley T-Rod I mentioned earlier?

Note: I think the T-Rod is properly classified as a fixed blade and fixed blade only. Just pointing out that if we accept that it sinks that particular definition of fixed blade.

Whatever it is, it is not a fixed blade. Because the blade...is not fixed. It pivots and locks into a different configuration that happens to still leave the blade exposed, so one might call it a "convertible sheath knife" but it is not fixed.

Edit: Note that just because a knife is not a fixed blade does not mean it is inherently a folder. The two are not antithetical, though they are mutually exclusive in a single-bladed knife.

That's fair.

True that. But if anyone votes "yes" from this point on, they could refer to AJ's example and they'd be correct.
Exactly. I assume you read this as well:

Had I said "can a knife with a single blade be both a REAL folder and a REAL fixed-blade", you'd be wrong. But I didn't say that. And I'm not about to change my question mid-stream. So you win!

So what exactly are you suggesting? That I didn't admit that I made a mistake and changed the ground rules?

Oh, and just to update the results, among those who voted on the question rather than opting out of the poll (you know, the turtle lovers), over 4 out of 5 said a knife cannot be both a REAL folder and a REAL fixed-blade at the same time. And I suspect that if I hadn't made a mistake, the results would have been even more lopsided than that. So much for losing the point.

If only. Still, even though my question wasn't as precise as it should have been, most people seemed to understand what I was asking and used their common sense. Restores my faith in humanity! :D And if the only thing that came out of it was FortyTwoBlades definition of a fixed-blade, it was worth the price of admission . . . or at least it was for me.

Goddamnit! I voted no, then saw the "I like turtles" choice afterward. :(
You'd have been good either way. :)

Look, I realize my question appears to be absurd and I was just begging for a "turtle lover" vote. That's why I included it as an option in the poll and why I'm not at all surprised at how many people voted for it. But go to the Extrema Ratio site, look up the RAO, and read the description of that knife. Then come back and tell me how absurd my question is.

The Extrema Ratio RAO description makes false claims.

Of course it does. Why? Because a knife with a single blade can't be both a folder and a fixed-blade at the same time. That's the point!

And one more time, thanks to those who took me to task for failing to say that I was referring to a single-blade knife in the first place. You guys are good! And for what it's worth, if you voted "yes" because you were thinking of a multi-blade knife when you voted, your votes were completely legitimate as far as I'm concerned. Mea culpa. Mea maxima culpa. :)
