Photos Can i get a second opinion on my new Custom Buck? Am i overreacting?

CoreyC25,

It sucks to have a Custom ordered item not meet your expectations. If you don't send it in for Buck to fix it, you will never like that knife. So send it back, I have been there more than once with Buck and they always worked to keep me a happy customer.

I can clearly see the Blue Tiger Striped side (I like it). You as a woodworker want it as you would make it and its not perfect in your eyes and in this case thats all that matters!

That is a slick looking knife, it definitely looks like they didn't do the best job of matching the scales. That would bug me if I paid for a custom job. I bet they would find a better matching scale for the lighter side if you sent it back.

Send it in. They’ll make it right, no doubt about it. Like has been said - if it bugs you now, it always will. Every time you look at that knife you’ll only see the scales and you’ll wind up hating it. It’s brand new, you should love it.

By the way, don’t worry about the warranty running out. Forever is a damn long time.

I’d just use and enjoy it. You can’t see the scales in the sheath or in your hand. If it’s only for display you can only see one side at a time so that should also work. If you send it back you will be never be happy with it because you already aren’t. There can’t be a second, first impression.

Woodworkers should order Stag scales.🫣
Different wood takes dye differently, even if it's the same species of wood. Buck uses a laminated then dyed type of wood, birch, I think. I don't think we are paying enough for a custom for a worker to go through a batch of scales to find matching sides.

I myself probably wouldn’t mind the difference between sides. In fact, to me, that kind of makes it more unique and custom, and less ‘factory’ looking. But that’s me. If it really bothers you, you should probably send it back and let them know what you’re not happy with, and hopefully they can fit it with better matching scales. Their customer service is usually very good, though sometimes it might take a few days for them to respond. Maybe Matt ( Buck Knives Inc. Buck Knives Inc. ) might be able to offer a suggestion. Good luck!

I don’t think it’s bad but I understand your thoughts. Being in the HVAC trades I constantly look at things like that. If you were in the recurve bow world those guys look for things like what you mentioned. It makes them unique. It makes it yours.

I am sorry.. BUT.. I so disagree with this statement.. I think if you buy a CUSTOM knife that the handles should match as close as possible.. I just cant imagine getting a CUSTOM anything if it is not spot on in the match dept.. Sorry..
John :)

I personally would keep it, it now has a story, and is unique because there are many others but this one is yours, the marines have a saying about that, but that's besides the point. This may be a knife you get to pass down to someone someday and it will have a unique story to tell.
I got my custom 110 buck knife in the mail a few days ago. It took 7 very long weeks as I was very excited about it and excited to show everyone. I lost my last 110 and they don't make that version anymore so I decided I'd get a custom one.
I'm not sure if maybe I was expecting too much or if im being too picky but I am not happy with the knife I got. The blade and everything else are perfect is the scales that bother me.I ordered the blue wood scales. I'm a woodworker so I know all about using natural materials and that my knife wasn't going to necessarily look exactly like the picture. What I didn't expect is for them to send me a knife with mismatching scales, splotchy and even missing stain on one. I assumed they would pick two scales that resembled each other. I haven't heard back from buck at all so maybe I'm over reacting and being one of those difficult to please customers. At the end of the day I spent $200 for a knife that I'm not excited about. What do yall think?
*First time posting on the site so met me know if the pictures don't show or if I broke a rule. First picture is the side that doesn't bother me, 2nd is the side that is splotchy and you can see bare wood,3rd picture is just a close up of that side.

John, I believe there is custom and then there is 'custom'. JMHO

A custom knife is one where all parts are made for that knife, by a craftsman. A Buck 'custom' is made from production parts that are put together by a production worker.
I believe that the Buck 'custom' knives are made on the regular production floor.

Years ago they had a true custom shop where you could order a knife made to your specifications...a true custom. Then, not to many years ago they had a separate room and had more skilled workers put the knife together from production parts.

Here's one I ordered December, 2005...
