"Can I use your knife?"

I used to say yes, well after some idiot used my ZT 801, "thinking he was Rambo" to swipe at someone and knicked him in the Armpit with it .The answer is now no way. Unless its a close friend or relative who I actually trust.

What if it's a relative you don't trust (with knives) but you can't really say no and that person knows you always have one.
Any tricks besides carrying a second one? Also offering to cut feels kind of too belittling even if that would be safer for the knife and the person.

The only safe way to go is to assume EVERYONE is an idiot (not really that far from the truth, unfortunately).

That said, i apparently must be insane- repeating the same behavior expecting different results- because i sometimes give the benefit of the doubt. I ask for details for details. And also let them know if the break it you bought it. If i decide to give it to em i specifically ask "You cutting or prying?"

Disturbing how often i hear the wrong answer.

Use to let folks use it. Learned the hard way. Now it's a flat out "no."

Hate to do it but no more snapped off tips.....no more destroyed and chipped edges.....no more watching folks about to slice their fingers off, etc. Anyone who doesn't or won't carry a knife deserves to use their keys as slicing tools. Truth be told it's safer for them to use their keys.

Most of the time when asked, it's to open a package.
And when I say "NO" they try using their teeth, and I just laugh and shake my head.:D

No problems here saying "no" to others, whether it's to use my knife or anything else I feel strongly about. They'll survive, especially if communicated with confidence and kindness.

A knife is the oldest and in my opinion the most useful tool man has why don't you carry your own. Nah I would usually ask what they are cutting and if it's something reasonable hand them my knife

I will cut what they nees, or ask what they are cutting. Had a brand new knife handed back to me missing the edge and finish. Moron used it to cut a bunch of silicone carbide grit bags. Instead of cutting the tops off, and then dumping, she opened them up like she was committing human sacrifice.

Had a few tips lost over the years.

Also had way too many people cut them selves.

I always ask "Why?" first. If its reasonable I hand my knife over, say "Be careful, its sharp." then usually "Just hand it back to me Ill close it".
The second time someone asks to use my knife I ask why they need to borrow mine since they obviously need one of their own.
I used to work at a motorcycle dealership and that was the mechanics deal with one another- borrow once, ok, borrow twice you need to buy your own.

You need me to cut something for you?

This!

I had a manager at a bar ask to borrow my Strider (obbiously bot by name) and i asked what he was going to do with it and if he was ok with being on the hook for 475 dollars. He was frustrated by my answer, and i watched him jam a steak knife into a frozen drink machine lol

I stopped lending knives in such situations some time ago. If something needs cutting, either I'll do it or they can just gnaw it.
