Can you guess what this is?

When I saw his guess I was dissapointed because that was going to be my guess but since he wasn't sure I might as well put it out there.

Impala

BTW I was almost positive that's what it was before I started reading through the posts.

I know what it is. I smelled it when I stooped by your shop yesterday.
Mark ,it is not proper etiquette on this forum to have a contest with out
giving a prize to the winner. I am sure a chunk of old walrus or as set of those blue mammoth scales would do.

Man I'm jealous. Mark and Chuck are neighbors in some of the most dramatically awesome country on the planet.

Pssst Chuck, PM me about that smell...just kidding. :p

Phil, I'd say Hawaii isn't exactly hum drum.

I'm from OKLAHOMA! I'd say you both have me beat.

Well, this was a lot of fun, we had a lot of great guesses, but you guys do know that some of those things don't really exist..right. There were lots of close guesses, it is one of the African antelope. I have cut up almost all of them and to my knowledge they all have black horn material except three. Many have brown patina on the outside from the elements but only three have color in the horn. Some of the Lesser Sable (greater sable are protected) have color, but they are very frustrating because you can cut up a bunch and have color in only a few. Kudo have lots of neat color but they do not have the same texture. The mystery material was Waterbuck horn, not to be confused with Water Buffalo.

So I wrote all the post numbers on pieces of paper except my own and those of multiple posts (so everyone would get one chance) and pulled a number from my ABS cap given to me by a good friend who went to the school, and the winner is #52 C.Mcneil, I also decided to give a prize of Steller Sea Cow bone to everyone that guessed correctly. By coincidence, C.Mcneil was also one of the guys that guessed correctly so he gets both. black mamba seemed like he really knew and petah also guessed right.

C.Mcneil, petah, and black mamba please PM me with your mailing address and I will send them out to you. This was a lot of fun, I am going to do more. Thanks for playing. Mark

Excellent! I can't PM so I will be sending you an email.
Thanks for the chance to win!

Sweet!! a double whammy, I playing the lottery tonight. Thanks again Mark for the chance to win some scarce handle material.

Thanks Mark. Great gesture and I love your knives. PM coming. You're on my definite list of someday. . .

Baleen is the filtering horny material from some whales mouths, it is not legal for most of us to use for knife making since it does not last long in the elements, there is no anceint, or pre-ban baleen. Native people can make knives with baleen legaly.

Now you have me wanting to go find some sheep horn. Neat thread.

From what I've seen of baleen it's pretty thin isn't it? Legal issues aside, I wouldn't think it would work for much more than spacers. At least not what I have seen in the past.

Thanks for the thread Mark,
SDS
