Canal Street Cutlery Is Closing Again?

Sad news indeed, wish them all the very best.

Here's a "Pinch" that was kindly given to me by Eric Albers, who worked at CSC with Harold Buley and Dave Swinden, and picked up a few when they were shuttering the first time (note the absence of a shield or other insignia other than the tang stamp).

That is some really pretty red bone.

One if our members turned me onto the Red Trout knives when he picked one up. I had the chance, but passed, thinking I’d get one on the next run.....guess we know how that’ll work out for me:(

Sad to hear, indeed.
My initials are CS, I'd love to find an old beater to take the CS shield for a rehandle job. Do you think they would send me a few if I managed to get ahold of someone there?
Anyone have contact info for them? I'd be willing to pay for them, of course.

Thanks and I think so, too. Notice how the handle has been contoured to fit your hand. It is comfortable to hold. The blade is D2, but mine hasn't had any hard duty, like dressing out game. I felt lucky to have it when I got it; feeling blessed, now.

I didn't even hear about these Red Trout knives apparently. They look really nice.

I missed them also!!:(

If you blinked, you missed it. They were mostly gone before I knew what was going on. I did get a chance to check out the offerings afterwards and there were quite a few different materials...most were only 5 made of each. I very rarely see them come up for grabs. I think there was a Red Trout thread I'll see if I can find it.

Here's a couple OG's, redtrouts, and Co-Ops to add to the mix. The optimist in me would add that he says the Co-OP with Red Hill is done. That doesn't necessarily mean the Redtrouts or other similar ventures could be in the works. 20200308_170318_50.jpg

A Red Trout knife sold here on the Exchange today. I'd never heard of them, and it seems I wasn't alone. Maybe selling a few knives to a small number of plugged-in collectors isn't a great business plan.

:(
I saw that comment by Eric too. Sorry to hear this. I have a few CSC's and they're very well made. On par with GEC for sure. I was hoping they could make a go of the CO-OP. The only CO-OP knives I have are Red Trouts. I hope all involved land on their feet.

Demand outpaced supply from the beginning. I dont think you needed to be too plugged in, there was a thread about the venture on the front page of the Trad Forum for as long as they were available, by preorder with Red Hill and in the case of Red Trout, available in his online store.

Hey folks! Just wanted to update everyone since there are a lot of questions out there as to what's going on. Canal Street's going to be closing down once we get all the parts assembled for outstanding orders. Wally wanted to give it one more try but I think trying to sell knives wholesale, where you have to generate large numbers in a short period of time to make any money, just doesn't cut it when you've only got two guys trying to hammer 'em out. There's no money to be made that way. Per hour you could make triple the pay at McDonalds, or more! We did a bunch for Moore Maker that we're wrapping up now. Then I have another 50 to do for Red Trout, and that should about do it save for a couple dozen stragglers that may or may not get made.
Don't despair though; once that's all done I'm going to be lighting out on my own. I'm going to be starting my own cutlery company with a total of 1 employee, me. I think that's the only way to make a go of it, and I'm determined to make it work. No wholesale either. I'm going to be doing 20 or so at a time and put them up for sale as I get those lots finished. Probably every two to three weeks or so. At least that's my plan so far. I'll be starting out with a single blade jack and a sheath knife, then expanding from there. Slowly. This is an expensive business to get started with a lot of expenditure up front, so I can't rush into things being the poor sap that I am lol.
I should be starting assembly in about a month, so I'll do a little post and let you know what's up then. I want to upgrade my membership to Knifemaker first so I don't step on any toes here as I may be selling on the exchange as well.
