Canal Street Cutlery Is Closing Again?

Hey folks! Just wanted to update everyone since there are a lot of questions out there as to what's going on. Canal Street's going to be closing down once we get all the parts assembled for outstanding orders. Wally wanted to give it one more try but I think trying to sell knives wholesale, where you have to generate large numbers in a short period of time to make any money, just doesn't cut it when you've only got two guys trying to hammer 'em out. There's no money to be made that way. Per hour you could make triple the pay at McDonalds, or more! We did a bunch for Moore Maker that we're wrapping up now. Then I have another 50 to do for Red Trout, and that should about do it save for a couple dozen stragglers that may or may not get made.
Don't despair though; once that's all done I'm going to be lighting out on my own. I'm going to be starting my own cutlery company with a total of 1 employee, me. I think that's the only way to make a go of it, and I'm determined to make it work. No wholesale either. I'm going to be doing 20 or so at a time and put them up for sale as I get those lots finished. Probably every two to three weeks or so. At least that's my plan so far. I'll be starting out with a single blade jack and a sheath knife, then expanding from there. Slowly. This is an expensive business to get started with a lot of expenditure up front, so I can't rush into things being the poor sap that I am lol.
I should be starting assembly in about a month, so I'll do a little post and let you know what's up then. I want to upgrade my membership to Knifemaker first so I don't step on any toes here as I may be selling on the exchange as well.

Eric
Glad to hear you have a plan  Good luck with it. I look forward to seeing the knives you produce.

Would it be kosher to mention which models of Moore Makers are co-op knives? Or is that not allowed under the agreement? I just ask because MM is strictly a mail order proposition for me and I'd hate to think I was getting a co-op knife and actually get something else.

Thanks for the update Eric. We are looking forward to seeing what you are able to make in the future. And thanks for the great knives you have made for us in the past.

Man, all the best. Sincerely.

The CSC and Red Trout knives I've seen on the web have been gorgeous. I just never managed to land on one at the right time.

Will you be keeping with stainless?

Will the brand name remain the same?

Mike he doesn't have any of the co-op knives up yet. I think he's planning on holding them back 'till he gets them all delivered and then putting them up for sale during the Christmas season.

Thanks Eric. I'll keep an eye out.

I'll be running CPM154CM stainless on the folders and sheath knives. The brand will be "Albers Cutlery Company", "Albers Cut Co USA" on the tangs.

We all wish you luck on the new company.

That is very sad news. My only Canal Street knife, the 2015 Forum Knife, is my very favorite traditional knife. Hands down. I was hoping they could get back up to full speed.

Edit: Very glad to hear that I will be able to look forward to Albers Cut Co knives!

That's fantastic news Eric, and I think a smart plan.

Knives made by one person (especially someone known in the community) will be able to command a higher price than those made by a small group.

Very sad news :( Some really great-looking knives being shown here

Wishing you well for the future Eric, I'm sure your knives will be highly sought after and prized by your fellow Porch members :) Let me know if you ever fancy making any Lambsfoot knives ;)

To be honest I fell for CSC too late, just went under my radar. I Succeeded in getting the 10th anniversary knife though which I will not part with. It's a great news to hear you are going that way, I will be keeping an eye.

Really like seeing this, Eric! As much as a fan I am of CSC as a company, I feel that you in particular were at least somewhat responsible for the increase in QC of the CSC product in more recent times. I appreciate the effort you put in there, enjoyed what you did with the Co-op, and am looking forward to seeing what ACC produces!

My praise on you isn't to slight what Wally and others have accomplished over the years with CSC and the Co-op, but often it's the "boots on the ground" that make a company.

I had tried to purchase a new CSC when they reopened but there was no route to have it shipped to Canada. Unfortunate but I understand the complications.

Hopefully some day. Good luck Eric. I am envious of those who did acquire one of your fine products.

,,,Mike in Canada
