Canvas vs. G10

I have a few busse kin and 2 on order with canvas handles but don't have any G10....I'm going to order a SHE but thinking about going with G10 this time...how is the feel compared to the canvas? and when its wet?

G10 feels more like Paper micarta to me. But you can rough up anything. G10 is very strong stuff.

I only like g10 for small blades I might use for food prep or skinning. I always go micarta on big blades, because I think the grip and the warmer feel are much better

G10 feels like a solid resin. Whereas Canvas has some friction to it. Its rough. I like the looks of G10 because its just about bulletproof. You can hurt it and just about nothing at all will penetrate it. Canvas can take on surface dirt but is extremely tough too. You just wash it and its back to new. You can even put a little wet sanding paper on it and polish it some. My recommendations. If you are going to seriously collect knives, go to one of these knife component companies. Buy you a small piece of the different materials that you like. Play with them when you get the raw pieces. They machine well or you can cut them a file. This way you truly know what you like and you are only out $20 or $25 for some play pieces of Micarta, G10 and Canvas.

Great thanks guys...I think I'm going to stay with the canvas on the SHE... I know the feel...I have it on my ASHBM and Rodent 9 and this one is going be a user too!

I will say I have yet to see micarta look better than G10, but I have similarly yet to see G10 feel as good as micarta. Canvas micarta. I can't describe it. All micarta I've ever felt just felt better than ANY G10 I've run across.

I guess it depends on your reason for purchasing. If a keeper/safe queen, get G10. If you plan on using it, especially if hard user, get micarta.

Put another way, I ordered a BGTG with micarta. Then I got to thinking that I kinda wanted more as a looker than pure user. I contacted Lexi and asked to switch to G10. Now, I've come full circle, thinking I want to have it as a user, and kinda wish I'd stuck with micarta.

G10 works fine for me on small knives and folders. Over about 5 inches of blade, I am to the point of always going micarta. And I've used it processing deer. It works well, and when you're finished, wash it with dish soap, deer fat is gone, as is any dirt and oils, and it looks like the day it came from the factory.

I'm always tempted by G10 and go with Micarta. Almost every Busse I own has Black Micarta, not so much because it looks so spectacular but because it feels grippy in hand and is neutral in appearance. Would love to see more Tigerhide or Snakeskin or even a few different shades of Micarta.

Don't over think it, just buy the one you like the look of best, as you will look at it far more often than use it. ;) If your hand is so lotioney soft that it complains about the feel of an artistically & scientifically improved caveman tool there is always the option of gloves or sports tape until your hands toughen up. Just sayin'. :p

To me, G10 looks like cheap plastic and feels slippery. By the time I'd modded G10 to be "sticky" enough to be functional, I'd have ruined any aesthetic edge G10 might have on canvas micarta anyway...so I'd stick with micarta. That it's cheaper is just icing on the cake.

I sand all my canvas micarta down smooth because that's what works best for me (or I send it to the CS and wonder when/if I'll ever see it again), and if I wanted it to be pretty I could scrub it with soap and then use something like mineral oil or Tru-Oil on it to bring out the colors and layers in the resin. But that just seems to make it slippery, so unless I'm doing food prep with it I leave it alone :D

Micarta is grippier and looks better. It's cheaper too. That being said I prefer G-10 on my bigger blades and micarta on smaller blades.

I just ordered the SHE black blade and green/black G10....I was totally going to go with canvas last night but decided to go for a change I always order the black canvas....I have a HR and a Ratweiler in black canvas on order too.....I'm a plumber so my hands are pretty roughed up so I probably won't feel the difference anyway...LOL:D

Micarta on the users, hand shaped scales are mo' bettah on choppers. Carved G10 can be very sharp, but you can smooth it down, of course. Smooth G10 scales are much improved, IMHO, by a grit blast for some texture.

Like everyone else says: micarta is grippier and better (for me) as a user but g10 is so sexy. Res C is great too. Just get one in each.

That's what I was thinking... I have a few canvas handled and res c handled busses but no G10...so I figured I had to get the G10 on the SHE2 to have all 3 handle types and see what I really like best
