Care and feeding of peanuts.

heh a question from a skeptic

do you folks never have an issue with the handle size of the peanut? I love the blade size/shape don't get me wrong. I just wonder if i could get a decent grip on the thing with the handle being so small.

like i said, i love the blade size and shape, just wonder if it wouldnt be better with some more handle to actually hold on to it

No, not really. I can get a good three finger hold on it, and for most pocket knife jobs, that seems to be enough. Yes, for some people a bit more handle would be nice, but them there's more bulge in the pocket. But when I'm using the pen blade, the short handle seems to butt into the palm of my hand very secure for fine whittling/cutting. The boxy handle has a sort of square cross section that I can put my thumb on the back, and put more pressure in the cut if need be. The only time I would be using a knife for heavier cutting is when I'm off in the woods or canoe camping. Then I have a hatchet or folding saw in my bag, and a small sheath knife on my hip. The peanut is my suburban cutter/companion.

For me the peanut does a lot of things very well but, the SBJ is better for all around use. I wish I had tried the Peanut sooner.

...but y'all are making me go look for my yeller one which is in desperate need of some pocket time.;)

Great post, as usaul, Jackknife. Now I need to get my case of peanuts. They are probably really mad at me. I have not had one out in a while. I hope it is OK to post a pic of my peanuts. It is a family shot. But some are not on there because they where not born yet when the pic was taken. I got to update the family picture.

It is almost entirely jackknife's fault that I succumbed to the allure of the Case Peanut a couple of years ago. It is almost entirely a guy named Steve's fault that the one I got was yaller.

I loved that little nut. He bit my thumb a good one a bit after I got him. One evening, I was slicing some cheese, and he kicked through it, rolled in my hand, and hit the side of my thumb and gave me what is officially the worst scar I have from the tiniest knife I've used. His pen blade sliced like a laser, right through heavy leather when I was laying out holsters and knife sheaths. Cute, useful, sharp, and tiny.

He fit in my watch pocket, and got carried all the time, while I rotated through other stuff, too.

One day, I was hiking on a steep, rocky mountain trail, and pulled my keys out of my pocket to give my wife before she took a tired kid back to the trail head. I kept hiking with the bigger brat, and then realized that my Peanut wasn't in my watch pocket. I grumped at myself. It must have fallen out when I pulled out my keys.

When we started back down the trail, I kept my eyes open as we got closer to where mom and smaller brat turned around. We encountered another dad and three kids hiking up the trail. The littlest one showed me this nifty little yellow knife that was just his size that he'd just found.

I smiled and told him he was a lucky kid.

And laughed at myself. I got a Boker Peanut with redbone handles. It's not as good as my Case was. It doesn't get as sharp, and doesn't hold its edge as well. It doesn't ride in my watch pocket.

I got a Case Penknife this spring when I noticed that the Ace Hardware in town has a new Case display - no Peanuts in it, oddly, though. It's yaller. It's still not my peanut, but it's been winning me over. I don't think I've left the house without it in a month. It's got most of the goodness of the Peanut, and it's slim, too. I like it.

Thanks Jackknife. You did it again for me.

After reading this post, I went to a dealers website to look at the peanuts. They have a John Wayne Burn Stag Peanut for half price. As with most male americans, John Wayne is a hero of mine. I have a large amount of his videos, and watch them reguarly. Plus I have come to love stag. And of course I love the peanut. So it is a four time winner. With the time of year, and how things have been finacially lately, I could not buy it. But, the last couple of years my wife and I just give each other cash for present. Or she will come home and say, look what you bought me for Christmas. Makes things less stressful for both of us. We split our money to get a new gps since our old one needed to be replaced. I still had $50.00 I could spend, but I was not sure when I could. So last night i emailed her the page and asked her to let me know when I can order it. Well I sleep in my recliner downstairs in our living room due to physical issues. I woke up and she was on the computer. I asked her if she got my email. She said yes. She was going over the bills to see if I could do it now or have to wait. A few minutes later she said, "Go ahead". To be sure I asked what? She said go ahead and order it. YES! So I did. She said she was thinking of getting me a knife instead of letting me buy what I want. And this one is much better than she would have done.

So thanks for Jackknife for posting this thread, getting me thinking of peanuts, and wanting to look at them. I saw this one and was able to get it. Thanks again Jackknife. And my wife, who said when I just got done ordering it, Merry Christmas.

I love carrying my 'nut but its CV, and even with a thick, dark patina, it still rusts in my pocket:( my sweat must be deadly haha. I am going to pick up a SS one soon!

The stainless version is every bit as good as the cv IMO. Go for the amber bone, they are really nice.

AHH, you guys are killing me! I just ordered a nut yesterday and have to wait until tomorrow after classes to actually fondle it! Now the anticipation is killing me!

The Amber Bone is nice. But nothing beats a PA red bone.

You need to drink more water, and eat less salt. Really, try it for a month, and see if your sweat is still that bad. Start off your day with a large glass of water, and drink at least two bottles during the day.

This is one of the best threads ever, I have enjoyed reading, and re-reading these posts over and again. I think there is a lot of wisdom in jackknife's words, so it's nice to sit back and get a lesson.
A Case peanut is something special to me, now that I've read all Mr Carl has to say, I love them even more.

Would anyone care to comment on the Case smooth chestnut bone 'nut? The chestnut bone in CV seems to be ubiquitous; it's certainly a nice knife (and may be mentioned in correspondence from the undersigned to jolly ol' Saint Nick in a few weeks); but I've never seen comments on the smooth bone / stainless li'l guy. Specifically, I'm wondering whether the blades have the polished finish or the 'as-ground' finish found on the G-10 knives.

Thank you all for adding enjoyment to my day with your nutty anecdotes! They go well with coffee, among other things....

Fishinfs, I have never personally handled a smooth chestnut bone peanut, but my belief is that there is no such thing as a bad 'nut. :D

Some 'nuts are just a little different. They are all good. But I do think that the as ground blades are paired up with the G10 synthetic scale material.
