"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

Good morning, and happy new year to all.
I've got to go find some black eyed peas and cabbage before the day is over.

:D:D:D

I grew up eating tamales.

:D:D:D (me too! plus mandatory "menudo blanco" every new year's day )

We have the mandatory pork, cabbage, and black-eyed peas ready to cook. Ideally it should be hog jowls, but in this case it's just going to be pork chops.

:D:D:D

Fried Pork Chops - Black-Eyed Peas w/Bacon - Dirty Brown Rice - Steamed Cabbage & Carrots

That's what Mrs. Oro makes every year! :):):)

Happy New Year!

Just wanted to show this exceptional & beautiful picture so I can air some New Year's thoughts ;)

In the part of western Finland I live in there has been an alleged increase in the wolf population, I say alleged because for the past few months the local newspapers seem hell-bent on a disinformation/hysteria project. Fake news for real if you get my drift....I think the last time somebody was killed by a wolf in this country was back at the beginning of c19th when the country was part of Sweden....;) But if you read the newspapers you find reports of people everywhere suddenly 'seeing' wolves in every imaginable place, gardens, sheds, car-parks, near shops. Dogs have been 'mauled' by them by the dozen and people send in e-mails, tweets or letters that they now have to keep their children indoors out of fear of wolves devouring them. Too much late night reading of Little Red Riding Hood...:poop: Cue local politicians (it's election year you guessed it!) demanding action and protection, plus certain clueless unenvironmental members of the hunting lobby foaming at the mouth to be allowed lose on the 'problem' You see wolves are a protected species here and may not be (officially) hunted but a lot of evidence shows poaching anyway. Despite the intervention of wildlife specialists pointing out that wolves are still rare, packs very small and attacks on humans almost unknown, the hysteria continues.

When you consider that uncontrolled aggressive dogs often cause attacks, a few fatal on human beings&pets/livestock every year it gives you a perspective, but no. In this area in the least 10 years very large areas of forest have been felled and very very little replanting seems to take place, but people need the income from forest as agriculture has become less profitable. This has naturally impacted on the wolf population, wolves are disturbed by logging machines and move away from these areas, possibly making them more visible.

I was once fortunate enough to see a young wolf from 5 metres. I was unloading the car in a secluded place getting ready for a stay in a cabin. My girlfriend had a pet rabbit in a travelling crate and I was collecting the stuff when I turned round to see a large dog with no collar staring at me. I thought better keep calm as I don't want the rabbit attracting attack. Only the 'dog' did nothing, no barking, no greeting either friendly or hostile, no tail wagging and dogs always react to people in some way or other. He just looked at me tail down, then crossed the track, stopped on the edge of the forest bounded a few metres silently, stopped looked over his shoulder at me and then vanished into the trees in a flash. Then I knew that this was no dog! But what a privilege he had obviously chanced upon me by accident and then retreated. My long winded message here is if we cannot as a species co-exist with the animals of the earth-without insisting on exterminating them as a threat (to us or 'progress')-what hope is there for long term survival? Fortunately, not everybody is taken in by media misinformation or misjudgement but it's a constant battle!:D Wolves are noble and must have their place, and not in some zoo either:rolleyes:

Wishing you All Beauty in the New Year:thumbsup:

Having grown up in a place where wolves still eat people sometimes (rural Alaska), I always feel the need to point out that wolves can in fact be bad neighbors sometimes. That said, I think it gives people a healthier relationship to and conception of nature when they learn that they can be eaten. It is good for people to know that they are not the immortal masters of the universe I think. I wish there were wolves and bears everywhere.

HaHa!!! :p:p

How about, "You know what I'm sayin'?" after *EVERY* word.

I gotta have one of those.:cool:

Hey folks I want to start doing a bit better in the knife storage department this year. I have display cases for most of my knives except a wooden box I have about 50 or so knives just thrown in it. They are basically my EDC knives but still don't deserve just thrown in a box so I want to buy a 50 plus knife roll for these. Do any of you know of a good rough and tough I can take the abuse brand of knife roll built to last.
