Hey Smaug, does your forum name have anything to do with The Hobbit?

Yes! I use this name or some derivitive of it at most forums I post on. Every now and then, someone recognizes it, and I know that person is well-read or at least of good taste. :)

I'm really interested to see what they do with Smaug in the new Hobbit movie, or the "sequel". He can either be the best dragon that cinema has ever seen, or another flop. WETA did a great job with the Nazgul's mounts and all of the other monsters in LOTR.

I also want to see Beorn and Bolg the Orc king "throw down" ;).

hah!
and i thought it was so obvious that it would have had to be coincidental or something

lol the irony, well read enough to recognize it
well read enough to assume it wasnt intentional :p

You guys might be pretty shocked at how many of today's youth doesn't know there is a book called The Hobbit. Very disappointing.

You guys might be shocked at how many of today's youth don't know there are books by Jules Verne, Alexander Dumas, Dashiel Hammet, Louis LaAmore, Robert Parker, and many other fine authors.

Carl.

Anyone have any experience with queens customer service? do they have any type of warranty?

I sent my 2010 BF knife in not long ago, fully covered by warranty but if you have sharpened yours expect it to come back with the queen butter knife special touch.

Oh my! There is no way I am going to miss this! Can't wait for December to get here!

There is a trailer up currently for the first Hobbit movie. Doesn't look like they get to Beorn's in this one. Next one should have Beorn, Smaug, Mirkwood and the Halls of the Elven King and the Battle of the Five Armies. I really want to see Beorn vs Bolg.

I hadn't read L'Amour until recently, the past few years. I received several paperbacks, but while I love western films, it's funny that I didn't really care for books. I love western history, mostly the gunfighters and the natives of the plains, including my ancestors, the Blackfoot and Crow. I found two collections of L'Amour short stories, many of which focused on surviving in the desert. After noticing a pattern, it became a sort of joke with me. That changed when I read in an autobiography disguised as a book on his favorite literature, as a young teenager, he took on a job as a caretaker out in the desert. His employer suffered a heart attack, no one came to relieve him, and he walked out of the desert, experiencing much of what he writes about in his books. BTW, I didn't recognize who wrote the Maltese Falcon until I read the back of the DVD case several months ago.

I was surprised to find out that my little brother and baby sister had never seen Back to the Future!

I had a Mountain Man lockback that picked up a case of the wiggles, and needed to be sharpened. I had experienced superb sharpening from Spyderco and Benchmade, and thought I would get the same. The MM came back, absolutely covered in grease, wiggle was not fixed, and the edge was actually worse than when I sent it in. My recent purchases including another MM slipjoint, were sharp and have not developed the "wiggles".

How about non-fiction books, guys? Any tips on good, compelling must-reads about the Old West, Civil War, WWII, etc.?

Non-fiction often presents one side of history in a favorable light. I appologize in advance if I offend anyone's feelings.

FDR Goes to War by Burton and Anita Folsom

With the current great emphasis on emulating FDR's accomplishment in getting the US and the World out of the great Depression of the 1930's, the Folsom's present some history of FDR and his accomplishments during this period.

I grew up as the 1st American born son in a large immigrant family. I remember sitting in front of our radio console crying for hours on the day FDR died.

As an historical researcher, I was in my late 50s before I saw documentation in National archives of many of the facts in the Folsom book. I had actually lived this without understsanding it.

I am not proposing this as a political statement. This is an excellent history and gives background for much of what I was surprised to discover in an intensive 2 year research project 20 years ago.

Fiction does not always take sides. Non-fiction always has a point of view in selecting the facts to be presented.

All this talk of books reminds me to ask... Carl, how is the book coming? :)

In the past month with my new Apple MacBook Pro, I've learned to open and save files, move stuff around, and am organizing the stuff. I'm defiantly ahead of where I was when I got this thing last month. I'm learning this 'puter stuff. I'm going to be putting stuff on flash drive to save and maybe give to a literary agent when the time is right, and I'm ready. I still have to learn to do pics, and other things. But I'm getting there, slowly, but getting there. Takes a little time for an old dog to learn new tech stuff. Karen and the family is drag gin into the modern age, like it or not. Heck, I may even get an iPod.

Very cool Carl! Not trying to rush you, but I know Im interested to read your book when your finished. Pictures are very easy.

Photobucket is a good free photo hosting site. Very easy to use http://register.photobucket.com/

Congrats on moving right along :)

Carl, there are quite a few knife magazine writers on here, from Blade, Knife World, Knives Illustrated and Tactical Knives. The publishers of the magazine Tactical Knives also publish a magazine called New Pioneer, more along the lines of Backwoodsman, with articles from some TK contributors. I would contact Knife World's ed dept too.

For fiction or nonfiction, drop by your local library sale or Goodwill. I've found lots of great books for literally pennies on the dollar. Some out of print books too. Gotten a lot of good knife books at the Goodwill not 15 minutes from me.

The book Crow Killer the Saga of Liver Eatin' Johnson by Raymond Thorp and Robert Bunker presents a pretty realistic portrayal of the real life tall tale that was far darker and grittier than Robert Redford's Jeremiah Johnson.

Backwoodsman magazine has a lot of great articles on 20th century mountain men, the real deal too.

Heck, I may even get an iPod.

Carl.

This reminds me of a story I just got from my stepmom by email:

Jeremy's stepmom said:
I was in Dunkin Donuts recently when I suddenly realized I desperately needed to fart. The music was really loud so I timed my fart with the beat of the music.
After a couple of songs I started to feel better. I finished my coffee and noticed that everyone was staring at me… And suddenly I remembered I was listening to my iPod
