I'm serious about the kerosene. Best thing for woodworm.
Do you just paint it on the infested wood with a brush/rag?

I'm not finding any holes (although I don't know if my eyes will find pinholes anymore) or worm tracks in the wood. I wonder if it's possible that the eggs were laid between the paint and the wood somehow and that's why I've got mostly paint loss so far.

I've also read today that wood with higher moisture content is more at risk. We've had some big snow storms, above average rainfall, less sun, and cooler temps than usual this year, and as a result, it seemed like my garage floor stayed wet forever this year. I wonder if that's related?

It doesn't really look like any bug I'm at all familiar with. Have you tapped it to see how sound it feels and if more sawdust falls out?
But yes, paint the kerosene on with a brush or rag, or spray it.

Funny, I thought I'd posted the above.

Wetting is certainly not good for wood. I think it's repeated wetting and drying the gives you dry rot. Which is a spore. (I remember from the super-fast dry rot spore-shooting pistol on the Avengers.)

I beat the rain by ten minutes, speaking of wet. 46' on my +50' walking loop.

There might be a problem with reconstructing my karate forms for non-walking days: the detailed notes I made thirty years ago read like gibberish now. I can still read the hand-writing, though, which is unusual.

GT, 5K Qs 5K Qs - Looks like one short length of 2x4 stud is infested. I wouldn't hesitate to cut 3' out and add a new section of 2x in its place. Vacuum and dry the surrounding area and maybe wash with some kind of insect toxin before adding in the new piece. Can't tell if it is beetle or termites or carpenter ants but cutting out the section should reveal the culprits. My 2¢.

Ray, I gave you an inaccurate impression with my photos. Almost all of the studs on that side of the garage look similar to the one I posted, and many of the "siding boards" (that actually have brick on the outside) on the bottom couple of feet also may be affected. If I have to replace the wood, it will be a significant task.

The affected studs still sound solid when I tap them with a hammer, and I can't just stick a screwdriver (or pocket knife) into them easily as if the outer layer is all spongy/crumbly. So I'm hoping it's still "early days".

Thanks for the advice, guys.

Sorry to hear that GT. :( You may very well be in need of some rework then. Might be useful to start here to determine a course of solution - https://www.colonialpest.com/can-tell-insect-damage-wood-rot/ Good luck.

Hey Vince - here's bit of RoadRunner for you. I love this!! Great music and video.

What did you think of the cartoon VAVOOM? Pretty obscure but fun. Usually tagged along with Felix the Cat cartoons.

We watched a lot of the same favorites :)

Not familiar with the video with Knopfler's music. Interesting. Prefer the original.

Never hear of Vavoom, I'm afraid.

My wife is a bigger fan of Dire Straits than I am. Knopfler produced Dylan's Slow Train Coming in 1979. Interesting album.

I was answering a question for a fella in General Forum. I was pretty sure I knew the answer but was looking for documentation. In doing my homework I found this reference that one Tobias Gibson had put together on who owns various knife brand names. For those whose interests include such things, it's worth a gander.

The information below started as a project to determine who makes all those American sounding brand names knives and where they were actually made. I started doing this as an effort not to buy junk knives. It began after hearing numerous brand name knives being sold both online and on television. Initially I wanted to find out what knives being sold Cutlery Corner Network television program were actually Jim Frost trademarks.

The main show competing with Cutlery Corner at the time was the now defunct Smoky Mountain Knife Work's, KnivesLive TV and Tactical Knives TV. As SMKW also produces numerous house brands, I decided to investigate the brands listed at the SMKW web site as well.

The list has grown beyond my original intention and now includes brand names from a variety of sources and online dealerships. The current list provides information on around 200 different knife brands. Still this is not an all inclusive list of every brand name out there.

Bookmarked. Thank you. :)

I failed my sleep test miserably enough that I've got an appointment in 11 days instead of 11 weeks. So apparently I didn't cure myself completely through sheer strength of character. Oh, well.
My only purchase today: a very nice stick for $7.50. I think it might have been more expensive in a larger town, because it's a nice stick. In a small town in farm country, maybe it's just a stick.

Just an hypothesis.
