"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

Today while I looked at my knife collection I realized that I have enough knives in patterns and sizes that I enjoy to use and carry. I have a handful of knives I won't carry or use. I'm wonder with my now small knife budget, should I sell the knives I don't use or should I hold onto them?

At one point, my collection was just knives that I knew I would carry and use. Now my collection consists of some knives I may never carry or use, or knives I have used in the past but I probably won't anymore. Or should I just limit my knife purchases to a handful of knives that I really want? Or am I just over thinking it? LOL idk.

Keep all you have. You never know where your interests will go and just might regret giving one up after it's gone.

So where do I see myself in five years after the apocalypse?
Well I envisage being the evil el supremo of a post apocalyptic trading post and post office...I would have at my command a gang of unruly scruffbag bikeys..and guys in dangerously chopped vehicles....their primary role would be scouring the burned out wastes for blades to increase my ruthless hording and monopolisation of the market...I would also like to be double crossing the warrior huntresses by trading over priced blades with their queen for a supply of lusty female bodyguards..
The short term profits would be excellent until being overthrown by dissatisfied henchmen and other rebels.

I think rather you would be overthrown by your wife because you cast your eyes on the new bodyguards. Just sayin'

Meanwhile. When it comes to number of knives, never say "never", as in "I will never have X number of knives." Because at some point, you might. ED makes a good point, also.

Or warrior huntresses.
"Dreaming is free."
Anybody remember Mad TV's Prehistoric Glamazon Huntress A.D.?

I try to keep my collection to about 30 knives, so I end up selling the extras. That makes me think about the one's I'm willing to get rid of and the one's I can't part with. This ensures all the knives in my collection have some type of value to me.

You hit the nail on the head, that's exactly right. With only 20 knives, there were NONE that I could get rid of. So, I had to increase the number to 30... But I'd still feel more comfortable at 20. :D

Thanks, John. My point being, that number will keep increasing with time. Next year or two years from now the number could be 40 or 50 and they could still all have value to you. I don't think a person needs to keep the number low to insure that.
Definitely do what works for you though!

You Americans have no excuse;) you live in a country with a big market for knives, not like here in Europe

True. I don't want to sound unpleasant, what i do appreciate here is the friendly mood, but, seriously, some of you seem to be spoiled children when i see a 93 GEC sold in 3 minutes while i was sleeping and see them, the next days, for sale "CONUS only " because " i own too much of them" or because " it's not for me".
I'm not complaining, each time i look at, hanble, open and use one of the few traditional american pocket knives i own it's like in a dream some europeans like me have. A dream which has for name "America". I can't find any translation for that word.

Dan.

Having m' knives all over the place makes me feel at home and the more there are, the more in my element I feel :D

I've never counted them, no interest in recording or cataloguing them-it would simply stress then bore me;) Nor do I feel the need to set a ceiling. I have a large number of books but I don't collect them together in some library manner either. What for???

If people suspect they have too many knives then stop buying them :D It could be a sign of losing interest in knives as well:eek: If reduced finances are the problem-something nearly all of us will experience at times-then it's self-regulating. And if there are decent knives you really do not use or don't actually like, then sell them:thumbsup: You Americans have no excuse;) you live in a country with a big market for knives, not like here in Europe:rolleyes: selling knives here is very special interest, akin to drugs only less harmful and profitable;)

I don't count or limit my knife accumulation, either. I try to keep my spending under control, and have at times resolved to sell a knife or two if I want to buy a new one. Sometimes when I want to buy a new knife, I look through the box for a "volunteer" and come across one that I haven't thought about or carried in a long time. "Oh yeah, I was excited about getting that. It's really nice!" I put it in my pocket and it's kinda like getting a new knife. That's the right amount of knives for me. Enough that I can neglect and then rediscover them from my own collection. :D

Perhaps in the post-apocalyptic dystopia, knives will be the last form of currency. Also sharpening skills. My knife sharpening skills will ensure that I am eaten last by the hordes of cannibals roaming the landscape. (or a nicer scenario: I'll be leader of that tribe of warrior-huntresses. I'll have the most knives, anyway) :p

I don't know how many of you follow the Tour de France, but, Wow! The past couple of days have been exciting. Today was downright crazy. Tomorrow is the last mountain stage and is where the winner of Le Tour will ultimately be decided. I can hardly wait to see what happens.

I'd love to watch, but don't have cable anymore. Maybe I could find highlights online somewhere. It's a great event.

I heard today's stage will be shortened too ... I hope that isn't true, go Steven Kruijswijk! :p

It's on NBC, right now!

Back when Lance Armstrong was racing, it seemed the tour was on every TV in every bar & restaurant in Austin. Now, we barely hear about it. ;)

Yeah, it's been a long time since there's been a serious contender from the US. This year there were only four riders from the US and the only one of them with a shot at the podium, Tejay van Garderen, had to pull out after he broke his hand in a crash.

He is and is riding very well this Tour! :) Won't comment on today's stage in case someone still has to watch ;)

I appreciate that. I just finished watching and will also avoid any spoilers.

I found an app for it. I'll catch up tonight after errands, chores, and dinner.

Cool. Enjoy it! Sorry about the golf.

OK i watched about 30 seconds of le tour the other night....but i couldnt get into it.
First ...get rid of the flotilla of motorcycles and team support vehicles ....I mean at least 5km behind the last rider....im sure its filmed from drones these days and if i was riding up a mountain i know i'd prefer not breathing in fumes.
Second ....commentators.....when theres a lull in the action...shut up. Dont try to keep the corporate over pumped excitement going....the various lengths and durability of each tooth on every chain ring on any bike is of no interest, tyre pressures, tread depth and seat post adjustments are boring...so stop blabbering and let me enjoy a nice ride through the French countryside and pretty villages....if you want to hype it into a hi energy gladiatorial combat...get them to ride through city traffic...or combine it with indy cars.
Commentary and the post mortem gibber ruins a lot of sport for me...
Test Cricket still remains without peer the most boring of all televised sporting events.
