"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

Besides, as a materials engineer, I have a certain fondness for hard anodized 6061. Carrying a chunk of it in my pocket adds a certain amount of cool factor for me.
I engineer aluminum products every day and this is the same reason I got myself an Alox Cadet that I have in my pocket daily :D It's fun talking about 6061-T6, 6005-T5, 6063-T52 and 5005-H34 isn't it? Just throw around some alloy numbers and tempers and you really sound smart LoL ;) My boss used to have a band called T5 and the Extrusions

Picked this interesting piece of porcelain up yesterday at an estate where they had thousands of pieces of porcelain and china, a very serious collection from a multi-million dollar, old money, place. It was totally unlike most of the other stuff, so I figured it fit in with the hobby and took it home. What I like is the reminder that there was a time a guy could make a living wandering around keeping tools sharp. And that's about as traditional as it gets.

For those interested in in more particulars, this is a Sandro Maggioni Sculpture Of The Knife Grinder In Porcelain by Capodimonte, cast in 1979 (according to the signature/date I just noticed).

Fantastic!

That is super, super cool. Good for you!

I love sharpening and have been doing it since I was a kid. That piece just trips my trigger and I thank you for sharing it with us.

As others have said, the detail in that piece is simply amazing! I don't know if I could justify $1,500 for something like that, but I would be sorely tempted. That is a wonderful piece of ceramic! My kind of art!

Were they a Heavy Metal Band? ( sound of meako spluttering coffee at hilarity of own joke)

I know I couldn't. The buying audience was mostly dealers, many of whom know me since I've been doing this for years. When you see a 2" tall little piece of clay selling for $1000+ to people who are going to turn around and sell it again you start to realize old knives aren't too hard to justify. I've seen a $5000+ glass lighting fixture sell for $100, and really nice chairs selling for $1 each. You never know...

That's a treasure, Paul! A simpler time indeed. Thanks for showing it!

Hey folks. Getting back to the pen conversation: I realize I never posted about this absolutely nifty 6-in-1 pen that Jack Black Jack Black sent me.

It's got a centimeter and inch ruler, spirit level, flat head and philips head screwdrivers, touch screen stylus, and oh, yeah...you can even write with it! :D Thanks, Jack!

That's actually pretty cool...I'll have to keep my eyes peeled for one of those. Oh, wait... It says keep away from children. Drat!

Had a great day. After breakfast with my wife, went to a gun show with my daughter, and found this:

Ambassador advertising knife, probably from the late '60s. $5.00.
Then lunch with my son--ribeyes! Forgot to take pics. But got to spend time with my granddaughter.

And enjoyed some whisky and cigars with my son.

Thanks Rachel, I gave one of those to John Maleham at Arthur Wright's, and dubbed it his Gaffer's Pen ;)
