"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

Well Porch Pals, my life of athletics and physical labor has finally caught up with me. After several weeks of terrible neck and shoulder pain I went and had MRIs done, and I have spinal stenosis and disc protrusion from C3 through C7. Lots of neurological symptoms forced my hand, and I'm going in for spinal fusion neck surgery on August 16th. The weeks of forced inactivity prior to the surgery might be worse than the cutting itself. I'm bored stiff. Prayers are appreciated!
Hey Jeff, totally new to this sub-forum (who knew this was the most spirit-lifting forum on the planet??) and ran across your post. Just wanted to say best of luck on the surgery. I'm sure this is totally frustrating and concerning, but I'm sure they will get you back to full strength soon. Best wishes and pulling for a complete and fast recovery for you.

Of course you realise..this means work.
Cheers

Well, I'm about ten days behind.
I've been back East to see family and buy toys.
The most expensive thing I bought was Bugs Bunny in Syracuse:

Something over $9.
This travel razor was $8. This might be great for trimming my animal mustache into an Errol Flynn mustache.

These all represent my favorite kind of knife purchase: an unappreciated treasure in the $5 box.

The ruined cel scraped off the Camillus Jack very easily. The shield says something like Crowell/ Apprentice/ Ladies Home Journal/ The American Magazine. And my initials. The Imperial is shrinky dink, worse on the other side.
The Kutmaster Barlow was $10 last year, and I couldn't pry open the rusty blades to see that it was a Kutmaster. It was worth the gamble this year at $5.
Parthenon? Akropolis? churchkey and Nibco money clip, $2 each.

Little Falls is a favorite place ($0.50) Acme Thunderer apparently made for Wilson, $2.

My absolute favorite way to acquire a knife: my cousin gave me Uncle Don's Brazilian poniards! She knows I love them, and she'd verified that her kids weren't interested. !!!???

I forgot my most expensive purchase was a cane for $10. You could say that I need another stick almost like I need another pocket knife, but this one has a little button reading Howell/London/England, and has some fancy shaping under the crook. Pic later; I'm exhausted.

Excellent haul Jer

Not fair! (surprise.) Athletics and physical labor are supposed to be good for you.

Maybe I was right to take a vacation from diabetes. You can't NOT drink beer at the lake. And I changed my mind about walking every day because of all the deer ticks. But I'd have stayed on the road and fire lane, so I'd have been fairly safe. But my butt got a workout in the car, so why walk. But I'll start walking again, if only to put off facing the bills for an hour.

Ha! :D:thumbsup:
Thanks, Jer. But even good things come to an end, and my bones are worn out. At least it'll balance things out. Now I'll have metal in my neck to balance the metal joint in my big toe.
Best wishes for a speedy recovery.
Look on the bright side. It's another step to becoming bionic.

Is anyone in here a fan of pens alongside traditional blades? I love pairing my pocket furniture up
I sure like my Parker Jotter (invented 1954, I think). It's a classic. Pictured here next to some traditional knives:

I like it better than the Cross pens I used to carry. Been thinking about getting a Fisher Space Pen, too (mentioned by Jeff).

I'm not really a pen guy (usually Bic sticks with cap ), but you might like this thread https://www.bladeforums.com/threads/pens-and-traditional-knives.1490261/

Nothing wrong with a bic! If it works it's good enough. Thank you for the link too.

I have a very cheap modern make of the Parker jotter. It's a nice pen, but the lower portion is made of plastic which leaves one feeling fairly uninspired.
I've really heard nothing but good things about the fisher space pen, but somehow I still haven't knuckled down and bought one. My everyday pen is a lamy safari fountain pen which I've had for five years now. Cheap enough to carry about, yet still pretty nice to write with.

I tried cartridge pens when they came out when I was a kid (fountain pens with replaceable reservoir cartridges), but they would leak in my shirt pocket.
I also liked a pen in a stand with an ink reservoir, but they take too much space and have to be tiptoed around to avoid spilling, or breaking off the pen.
I have one modern fountain pen I've found reliable for carry, and a few old ones that work but I haven't carried.
I had a brief flirtation with gel ink pens, but I've found them too finicky and they seem to dry out faster than good old fashioned ball-points. I was delighted when cheap clickers came out, because I like to deploy with one hand, so pretty soon there's no pen still associated with its removable cap.
I have a couple of Cross twist-barrel pen-and-pencil sets, one in a delicious cobalt blue enamel which I of course dropped on some pavement, and the rest stainless. I think they look nicely dangerous in a suit-jacket pocket. I also like being able to discard less plastic.
I'm keeping my eyes peeled for a stainless Cross clicker on sale cheap, which would be for me the best of all possible inky worlds.

So, not a question to which I've given much thought.:D

Fun discussion. :)

I carry a Fisher Bullet Space Pen in my RFP along with my pocket knife. I have several fountain pens loaded with different colors of ink that I rotate through based on mood and what I'm working on. Right now a Lamy Safari italic nib and a Waterman Phileas are seeing the most use.

Now that we're talking about pens, we might as well talk about paper. :) I like Rhodia notebooks since there isn't much bleed through from the fountain pen ink. What do y'all like?
