"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

Called a mobile groomer, and they're able to fit us in today. They've got vans setup with a bath and grooming area in the back. They won't come in the house (thankfully), so I have to meet them on the driveway, but Gizmo will be very glad it's not me doing it :)

It makes sense since if the authorities want to keep people docile.

Before cannabis was legalized by the state authorities for recreational use, there were an inexplicably high number of young people that needed the stuff for glaucoma and pain management. Now that one can simply walk in a dispensary and buy some, many miraculously no longer need their doctor's prescription.

These are very unsettling times. I think there is something very disturbing and sinister in play when the powers that be have decreed that people be allowed their mind altering drugs, but that they be denied the means to acquire arms.

Well, obviously I cannot comment on what goes on in your country. It would seem to me that it would be actually very easy to check-via prescriptions or verifiable medical certification who has a condition that might warrant medicinal C use. All I know is, that my glaucoma has spectacularly failed to respond to laser, surgery and the myriad of prescription drugs that are 'legal' and I'd just like to give other things a chance too, before I can't see. One of my eye doctors just prissily says to me " Well it might help yes but it's illegal here!!" Reminds me of another situation in Europe a long time ago. Thalidomide was a 'legal' drug but any woman fearing her foetus may have been contaminated by it might have been denied a termination because it was not 'legal' Legal is a relative convenience.

As for weaponry, again your country is different, and I'd support anybody wishing to acquire a gun for self-defence, but is anybody actually being denied from buying small-arms unless they have a severe criminal background or who are not American citizens? Like I wrote before, alcohol is most certainly a more impactful substance that M and it is clearly addictive, but it's legal and it's the culture. I like a drink and don't mind who knows, but I don't approve of those who go mad with it. It clearly IS mind altering then.

Will Power Will Power dont forget the the huge amount of tax the gov makes off alcohol and tobacco...the two of which in the long run will kill more people than any virus.

Coronavirus-itis....?
Coronaphobia...?
Two possible side effects of the fear and panic which is sweeping the land..

Yes, as a matter of fact. In California we are all currently being denied the opporunity to buy firearms. Cannabis dispensaries have been deemed an essential business, and thus are allowed to remain open. Gun shops on the other hand, are not considered essential and have been forced to close. Police officers have been sent to close those gun shops conducting business. This despite the fact that owning firearms is a recognized and protected right in this country.

I don't claim to know what's the best course of action, and what rights can or should be suspended in times of emergency. I just heard about a megachurch in Louisiana that had thousands participating in "the healing power of laying on of hands" Makes me pretty angry after I've been keeping myself cooped up at home for the greater good.

At the risk of sounding political...Here in Texas, the gun shops can be open, but any elective surgery is halted so abortions are effectively banned right now. Different states seem to have different opinions on what is a protected right. Of course, the right to peacefully assemble is pretty basic too.

I don't want to make it political either, but I find the developments concerning. In Los Angeles County the LAPD and Sheriff's Department have taken the step of deploying detectives on patrol duty. Something about public safety and keeping the peace.

So let me get this straight. The second biggest urban area in the country is putting extra manpower on the streets as a show of force. And yet we peons don't need to be going out and buying guns to protect ourselves? Something doesn't compute...

Great reading. I remember a tirade of Sancho Panza (from memory):

"Under a bad coat there is often a good drinker. I only drink out of thirst but, if by chance, a gentleman invites me to drink, what a stone heart would be mine refusing him health by not raising my glass?"

So true.

Dan.

I know a tough guy in my house who says: " Grooming? Don't even think about trying."

Great quote, and a fantastic pic! :D :)

Well, I just cut the grass for the first time this year, and the first time of any real exercise since my neck surgery last August. Believe you me, I felt every step of it. It's amazing how quickly one can become a physical wreck at age 65. Even in my mid 40s I ran 3 miles every day, and now just cutting grass has my legs quivering and my chest heaving. Getting old ___________ (fill in the blank!)

Success! We found a handsome hound under all that fur!

What a transformation, Mike! :thumbsup::cool::cool::thumbsup:
My wife saw the before and after pics and wondered if you did the grooming with a pocket knife; she was impressed.
She occasionally "touches up" her dogs at home between pro groomings. I don't think they look too bad; they're waiting for their warm weather haircuts in a couple of months, and will probably need another "home trim" before that.

We had a pretty nice afternoon in Saint Paul today, where I am staying with my son to recuperate from knee-replacement surgery. Sheltering in place is not a whole lot different from what I was already doing, but there is a strong feeling of dislocation and apprehension, not so much about the virus, which will be what it will be, but about what will happen to our country, which seems to be at the mercy of chuckleheads.

I passed a good part of the afternoon with my grandson, turning biggish sticks into little sticks. He is using the Marttiini Little Classic, his favorite knife.

Notice in the bottom photo how he is pushing the spine of the blade with his thumb. That is a technique I had never seen until I watched some knife review videos, and it is certainly nothing I ever taught him. When I asked him about it, he said nobody showed it to him. He just started doing it. Go figure.

But I sure need a haircut!

A doubt crossed my mind and I looked at myself in a mirror. Shaggy! Beard, hair! I'm shaggy!
I wonder if this is not the sign of the decline of a civilization.

Great choice. I can see he yet knows how to use his left hand thumb. Congrats to him. And to his teacher.

I didn’t teach him that. I have no idea where he got it. He says he just started doing it.

Working in healthcare, it's pretty well business as usual for me. My wife teaches at UVA and is distraught she can't continue her research. I would love to be sent home with pay for a couple weeks....

She was already pretty well experienced teaching her classes online so it wasn't much work for her to convert her spring classes to online only.

We are very fortunate to have her at home with both of our kids out of school and daycares being shuttered. Her being 8 months pregnant adds a new level of stress to it though.

Living out in the middle of nowhere, we usually keep a few weeks worth of food, but having everyone at home is putting a dent in our supply. Both of my boys eat like horses but thankfully our grocery stores are pretty well stocked other than lacking any paper products.

A couple weeks back when the hoardes were raiding stores for toilet paper, I ordered a bidet attachment off of Amazon and that has been the best $50 I've spent.

TP useage in my house is down at least 60-70%!!

The sun has finally come out and the rains have stopped so I'm looking forward to the 2020 garden season....seems as relevant as ever to be able to grow fresh veggies!

Jeff, I'm glad you're up to getting some exercise in after several months of recuperation!:cool::thumbsup:
To fill in your blank, I'd probably say, "Getting old requires that we adjust our expectations." Can't expect to do too much too soon after getting your throat cut , but I'm sure you'll gradually get back in better shape! ;) Maybe you need to push the lawn mower up and down the driveway a few times every day to help get your legs and wind back.
