We had a busy day today! :D

This is Scout Louise Brown. She was born at 12:51 this afternoon (five days past her due date). 8 lbs 10 oz and 20.5” long. She and her mama are both doing great! Eleanor was a bit disappointed that she wouldn’t get to come visit her sister at the hospital, but we’ll be going home tomorrow, and I know she’s excited to meet her.

The day Eleanor was born, I happened to be carrying a Farm & Field #71 Bull Nose in Nifebrite Acrylic, which has since become “her” knife. I carry it on her birthday (and other special occasions), take a picture of her holding it each year, and eventually I’ll give it to her.

Once we had decided on Scout’s name, I knew the exact knife I wanted to find for her: a Tidioute #15 Boy’s Knife in Nifebrite Acrylic (to match her sister’s #71) with the “SCOUT” shield. Of course, that was easier said than done. There weren’t many of them made (I don’t know the number off the top of my head, but it was a small run), and it had been several years since GEC had made them.

I reached out to several friends here on the forum looking for any help I could get. More than one person offered to sell me a #15 Scout in another handle material (Thank you guys! You know who you are!), but the Nifebrite Scout was elusive.

After a bit more searching, I learned that JohnDF JohnDF had been looking for this same knife for a while, and had recently found one. I reached out to him, not with any thought of asking him to part with the knife he’d just acquired, but with a far-fetched hope that he might have another lead from his own search. John quickly responded to my PM, asking me for my address and saying that he wanted to send me his knife. I told him that was too generous, and insisted that he at least let me pay him for it, but he refused.

Anyways, the point of that long-winded story is to finally publicly say THANK YOU, John for this extremely special knife!!! You really are too kind, my friend, and I owe you big time!

Here’s Scout’s Scout with Eleanor’s Bull Nose.

:thumbsup::thumbsup: Congratulations, for the great story/pictures and to the young mother and the little Scout! She is a sun ray in rather dull times. I can feel your happiness!
I did not notice your quest and would have been happy to help, though I must admit Beer Scout is less convenient for a youngling with such wonderful eyes! ;)

Congrats to you and your family for its recent 33 1/3% growth rate, Barrett! :):thumbsup:
What a clear-eyed young lady Scout is! (Is her name influenced by the character in the Harper Lee novel?)
Do Eleanor and Scout have their own little coronavirus masks?

Plaudits to JohnDF JohnDF for generously providing the eponymous grail knife! ;):cool:

Congratulations Barrett my old friend Scout is a beautiful baby girl and I'm so glad mama and baby are both doing well. I can just imagine how excited Eleanor must be so when you get Scout home you have to post a picture of both of them together. My favorite picture of Eleanor is the one with her in her egg costume.

Thanks everyone!

Many congratulations Barrett, to you and all your family :) Great gesture by JohnDF JohnDF :) Eleanor must be so excited to have a little sister :) Hey buddy, have you not thought of changing Eleanor's name to 'Bullnose' ?! :D ;) Love to you all :)

Jack

Jack, Eleanor is certainly excited! We’ll see if that excitement lasts after a few days of having a newborn in the house. :D

You know, I regularly suggest to Eleanor that we change her name to a variety of alternatives (Goober, Turkey, Benedict Cumberbatch, etc.), but she seems pretty attached to “Eleanor.” I’ll run it by her, though. ;) :D

Thanks, Alain! I have a lot of Beer Scouts :D but the simple Scout shield seemed more fitting. :) Although I could have added a lanyard/fob to a Beer Scout that would’ve matched the one on Eleanor’s knife. These are obviously the important decisions you have to consider when having a baby. ;) :D

Thanks, GT! That’s exactly where the name came from.

Eleanor has a few masks that were made for her by a friend, but so far we haven’t really been taking her anywhere that she’d need to wear one. No mask for Scout, but if we have to take her anywhere, we have a cover for her car seat/carrier that pretty much serves the same purpose.

Congratulations Barrett, she's absolutely adorable. :):thumbsup::thumbsup:
I'm glad I could help out with your knife search, I hope you both enjoy it for many many years to come.:thumbsup:

Thanks again, John!

Thanks, Randy! I’ll definitely share a picture of them together. The egg costume was a good one, wasn’t it? :D

Right now we’re just sitting around our room here at the hospital. Scout has one more test here in an hour or so, then we’ll be able to head home. This has certainly been a different experience than our first — face masks, no visitors, and no desire to stick around this hospital any longer than we have to! :D

LOL! I know that game Barrett! :D Let me know what she thinks :D ;)

My eldest daughter, Emma, had stuffed toys called Mister Papadopolis and Walid Jumblatt, while Ellie, my middle daughter, had one of those inflatable knock-down toys called John Major! I've absolutely no idea where they got the names, must have heard them on the TV I guess :D

Very cool source of the name!:thumbsup::thumbsup: With Eleanor having already had an egg costume, I can't wait to eventually see Scout's ham costume like in the climax of To Kill a Mockingbird! Who doesn't love ham and eggs, or green eggs and ham??:D

btb01 btb01 Welcome Scout Louise....you gorgeous little schnumpkin...
Congratulations.:thumbsup::thumbsup::)

When I was a kid on the last day of school my dad put me in a chair and proceeded to take his old barber shears and buzz my head as did all the other boys around us dads did the same. One summer a friends dad buzzed his hair so short that he cut into Ronnie's scalp then the guy got his head sun-burnt complete with blisters. Didn't see him without a ball cap all summer. :D:D
And now we take you back to Embarrassing Tales From Meakos Childhood...Tonights Episode .."Fringe Benefit".
As many of us would remember ..the 1970s was a time of revolutionary thinking and innovation...if you can't remember or were not yet born....google it.
New hairstyles came thick and fast. Mainly your hair was more trendy if it was actually thick and fast...shiny...flowing...lush...long hair was the fashion....and that was just the men....As an 11 years old schoolboy in 1975 I was one of many who aspired to have hair like the guy out out of the band The Sweet (Ballroom Blitz, Fox on the Run)..good news for me because I have a good head of hair...and...with the help of the barber and my Mum who supervised..I was able to achieve that super shiny helmet head look.
Think Benny from ABBA.
In retrospect the hairstyle was somewhere between Pageboy and Prince Valiant/ Hamlet Prince of Denmark....NOW ! read on only if ye be stout of heart and firm of brain.
I have a theory that the difference between a good haircut and a bad haircut is 2 weeks.
If it it looks good as you leave the barbers you will be back in 2 weeks for another trim...If on the other hand you leave thinking it looks wrong...in 2 weeks it will look great...
I left that day thinking it looks great! The fringe swooping horizontally across the brow, the back and sides seamlessly forming a blonde halo covering the ears entirely...remember that any exposed ear or part thereof would make you an instant laughing stock at school.....2 DAYS later the swish fringe had morphed into an out of control forelock. Of course at home we had no spray to hold it back....not even grease to maybe get a quiff happening...and so it dangled and flopped annoyingly in my eyes like the Sam The Sheepdog....until I could take it no more.Arriving home from school to an empty house I hit upon the idea of "fixing it myself"....so taking the kitchen scissors I gripped the frontal mane and began to cut.....Hgrraanch Hggrruunchh!
I placed the offending dreadlock on the table and feeling much lighter in the head went to admire my work in the mirror....Sadly a large rectangle section was missing from my once golden Sweet Guy fringe....spiky bits sticking up interspersed with skerricks of length...the remnants of the real barbers work....Then came the moment of horror as I imagined what Mum would do on her return home from work....Never fear intrepid reader..because you are in the presence of pure genius. The fix was so beautifully simple ...I took the discarded forelock.... which was enough to make a fairly good wig or prosthetic tail for a horse ... to the shed ...using masking tape I fashioned an undetectable kind of Toupee.....unfortunately it was the kind thats really easy to spot...it didnt quite work..more like someone had glued a small doormat to my forehead...Now all I had to do was wait...
Next step was being frogmarched up the street by Mum straight to the barbershop..and of course encountering a fraternity of snickering so called schoolmates...on the way.
It had to be blended...this meant shortened...and that wasnt good news.
Not good news at all...Bad news in fact...very bad...worser than the worst news.. ever...
Exposure of lower bottom part of earlobes.
I looked no longer like the guy out of The Sweet but like the guy out of Slade...the one with the really crap hairdo.
On the upside what doesnt kill you only makes you into a laughing stock at shool the next day.

meako meako I turned 13 in 1968 and did not cut my hair until I graduated college I went to AB Tech which was a 2 year trade school that offered an accredited Associate of Applied Science degree which back then was much more education than most. The only reason I cut it then was that I had to get a real job.

While we're on the subject I think Sam The Sheepdog is a fine and fitting name for you and where would one acquire a prosthetic horse tail.

meako meako I turned 13 in April of 1968 and having been the subject of debate in my home for the past couple of years was the fact that I was promised to be allowed to g4ow my hair as long as I wished. And grow my hair I did and did not darken the doors of a barber again until 1977 when I graduated from electronics school in 1977. AB Tech (Asheville Buncombe Technical Institute).was a trades school that offered an accredited associates degree and I had earned an Associate of Applied Science in Electronics and all though it was only a 2 year degree it was still much more education than many of my generation had.

Now in other news I think Sam the Sheepdog is a great descriptive name for you and where might one acquire a "prosthetic horse tail"? :D:D:eek:

Completed the annual ritual Installing of the Window Shakers today (window-unit air conditioners to the uninitiated). It was 88 degrees in my living room. Had the heat on 2 days ago...

DaRn rain. I didn't get to try out my new shepherd's sling, or shoot any empty soda cans with one (or more) of my slingshots today. :(
