"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

Looking at that nice dashboard pic for a moment thought it read 108 C  Not much car or people left if that were the case ;)

Hottest I've ever been in was 43 C in France and a walk on the street seemed like your lungs were going to melt:eek: Heard it can reach 50C in India though....

Conversely, the COLDEST I've ever been in was in the last century in a town in N.Finland called Oulu one morning in January I was walking to work in -42C* that's right MINUS 42C and I wondered if I was going to make it......did :)

* That's around -44 Fahrenheit/ 76 degrees of frost, in that bizarre temperature system the Americans and some British still cling to :Do_O
You probably use the metric system, too!

Hottest I've seen here in Eastern North Carolina was 112°f, thats suffocating heat. I hate when I hear someone say "it ain't the heat, its the humidity", It can be 50°f out and 90% humidity and nobody complaining about it. Without the heat the humidity doesn't bother you, its not the humidity that makes the heat feel worse, its heat that makes the humidity feel worse.

Worst heat I ever felt was in Las Vegas and Yuma in July. Very dry, but worse than the humid heat I'm used to. Like an oven!

Thanks, Jon. Good idea! Stay safe, my friend.

I have to work from home this week. Someone that tested positive for the virus came to our office last week, and the office will be closed Monday and Tuesday for "deep cleaning." In addition, anyone who had contact with that person (I am one of them) has to work from home all week and then test negative before returning to work. I shouldn't complain. Hope everyone stays well.

At possibly the lowest point in my life I worked for 5 days with a mate who was installing glass panels for the sides of lift shafts in 3 storey units in Sydney...the site was a xxxking nightmare of non compliance and safety was a thing for xxggots....it was december 2017 and the temp on one of the days was 47deg c...I tried to give some of the money to my mrs for a new tv for my sons...but she threw it back in my face and called the cops.....I have never been closer to the edge of the abyss....the heat was nothing:thumbsup::cool:

Really rough times you've been through. It's been good to see you smiling in recent pics.

(I'm gonna have to look up 47 C--maybe I should just learn the bloody Celsius system. NOT! :p )

Edit: 116.6 F! That IS hot!

Yuppers, -40 is the crossover point. -40C = -40F. It's downright chilly.

My coldest adventure was in North Dakota sometime early in this century. We had a project to build parts in a plant there. We had to spend a week there in early February to prepare. The second leg of the trip was a puddle jumper which took us to the local air strip. As we were taxiing, the pilot said words which are graven in my memory,
"Welcome to Jamestown. The temperature is currently -28, and with the wind chill, it's -35. Please take care when walking across the tarmac from the aircraft to the reception area. "

That was one nippy walk. Fortunately, I had been warned and had brought my parka in the cabin instead of in the luggage compartment. Wasn't wearing my long johns, though so I had to step lively.

This was during the last summer we lived in Arizona (2017):

From my truck the same day:

Depending on which temperature you want to trust, that’s around 49°C to 50.5°C.

Yes, it was hot, but honestly, after a few years in central AZ you get used to 110°-115° summer days, and what’s another 5 degrees, really? :D

Coldest it’s been since we moved to Minnesota was -28°F with a windchill of -52°F. Had to go out and jump start my wife’s car at 5 AM that morning. It was cold. o_O

Haven’t had to do this for years with fuel injection and modern ignition, but if you think your car might not start in the cold, a trouble light under the hood with an incandescent bulb will warm it up enough to start. It. Of course that’s no help if your battery is flat.

Take care all - I hope you are "clean" Vince! All good here thank you. Never experienced that kind of heat. I've only lived in New England and higher latitudes  Anything above 80° F (26.6 C) is too bloody hot for me. :)

I'll take the heat over the cold anytime! It rarely gets below freezing here, and it's only snowed about three times in the last 60 years. :)

It regularly gets over 40 during the summer here. Not ideal. You walk to the shops during lunch and come back drenched. Absolute nightmare.

If you are cold, you can add a layer. If you are hot you can take a layer off, but only up to a point.
Yes, I know, but I still prefer the heat. I spent about ten days in Baltimore around Christmas and New Year's Day many years ago, and the temperature was generally anywhere between zero and 20 degrees Fahrenheit. I bought thermal underwear for the trip, and gloves and a scarf. I already had a wool flatcap. Had to borrow a heavy jacket from someone because I didn't own one. Don't need it in south Texas. And I was still cold and miserable. I don't want to wear multiple layers of clothing. I have experienced temps of about 120 degrees Fahrenheit, and prefer that. Besides, there is usually air condition everywhere nowadays.
Also, I don't want to shovel snow or drive on ice. :) Only place I would ever consider moving to is the Texas hill country (I live on the coast now).

I spent my first 30+ years in central SC and I in no way, shape, or form miss the down right oppressive heat and humidity. In the height of July and August it would routinely hit 110+ in the afternoons.

Here in the VA mountains, everyone acts like they will melt when it gets over 90. I gladly accept a couple months of frigid weather in exchange for not sweating a shirt through just walking out to my truck.

I've been to the desert in full summer, it's no doubt hot, but doesn't feel the same as Columbia SC in August.

Columbia is the hottest spot in the state, it’s a miserable place...

Nothing there remotely appeals to me.
