"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

Thank you guys, for the kind recovery wishes, I can really need them. :)

@Mike: The health system in Germany and Austria are nearly the same and they are great, I think. I´ve never been so fast to specialists in such a short time.

And a raising cup (of tea) to Tanja & Joel for their engagement from my side of the world :)

Humppa, I am glad you are okay. I hope that your recovery is painless and you regain full use of your eye. I hope you don't get any problems for not wearing your safety glasses on the job.

Andi, I'm sorry to hear of your mishap, hope you have a full recovery with you eye. Will be thinking about you, especially when I'm working with striking tools ;)

Hi guys!

I wasn´t online since friday last week. I had on saturday a bad accident on the building lot. I use hammer and chisel to work. A piece of steel (roundabout 3 milimetres long) hit my right eye. I was a fool not wearing safety glasses. It was sharp enough to penetrate the eye and cause a lot of damage inside (!!!!) the eye. I had to go to the ER in Austria and went to a special clinic in Munich by the ambulance. There they made an emergence operation on my eye.
The docs there were able to remove the metalpiece from my eye. Only a little infection is still there, but I take antibiotica, so I hope this will help. I don´t see everything right now, but it will be ok.

They say, everything will be alright in a couple of weeks/months.

I really thank God not let my eye blinding!! I will never work without safety glasses while using such tools!

Just wanted to tell you my past few days.... :( :(

Oh man, that is awful. I am glad you made it okay. It seems you and I have a few parallels in our lives. I had a piece of metal go into my eye right on the edge of the iris. It rusted in my eye on the way to surgery but it was okay. I got antibiotic eye drops and my eye ended up being okay. I wish you the fastest recovery, and I believe it will work out. Though yours sounds much more damaging, I am with you, I will NEVER work without safety glasses anymore. I don't care what anyone has to say. Almost loose your vision like you did and you wont think twice.

Please, would you stop having such bad luck soon?

Here is to a quick recovery, Andi :)

Thank you guys!

It seems sometimes, bad luck is following like the own shadow.

But I´ll never work without safety glasses, this is a promise. I hate the state I´m into now. I´m ok, nothing hurts, but I can´t do anything. Not at work, not around the house...

@Kevin: They showed me the little piece of steel that was in my eye. It didn´t look any rusted, but I read the doctors letter - it seems it was in a blood bowl inside the eye when they removed it. I hope, it didn´t rust. I got eyedrops and pills antibiotic, I think.
I´ll see, what the doc says tomorrow

Hi Andi,

Sorry to hear about your accident.
It must have been a scary experience for you.
I'm sure the recovery process can be very frustrating but hang in there!

Andi, don't hurt yourself looking at knives here, and in the place that shall not be named ;). Seriously, go easy on your eyes, mine are getting worse by just sitting at my job, at a computer all day long.

Does anyone know if cutting onions to produce a patina on your slipjoint or traditional folder will impart an onion smell to it? Maybe a stupid question, but I have forced a patina peeling apples, sticking a blade in a pear and cutting up meat. However, I've never used my folders to cut an onion. I'm used to just grabbing a kitchen knife for onions.

Onion family (Shallots especially) give a nice purple blue tint to the patina.

As to smell, I wouldn't go slicing any fruits after chopping onions, at least not until a through wipe-down with soap&water:D:eek:

Whoa Andi, let's be careful out there!!!!

I'm saying a prayer for your eye and hope all ends well. Things can happen fast. Take care.

Carl.

Andi,
I'm very sorry for your eye. Anyway, I do trust the ophthalmologists; in a few days, your eye will be fine, and you will have learned a lesson.
At work, I've seen a fair share of patients facing those injuries. Sometimes, it still surprises me to see how many people perform certain tasks for their job (they should know better) without any protection.
Anyway...as Kevin said, while your eye gets better, you can chat wth us here :)

I'm glad for a good report.

"Take big care," eh? No cutting corners, now. Or anything else. :p

I'm guessing you need to avoid anything that could cause pressure in your eye?

Be good out there. ;)
