"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

Folks, this is no longer about knives, so I am going to move this to the lounge.

Andi, I'm glad you are unscathed. Deer run out so fast but it's lucky it wasn't some Wildschwein (Wildboar) otherwise the car would've been a write-off!
In Finland we have only a few Boar (kept mainly semi wild on reserves for meat) Deer there are a lot of, but our massive Elks (Moose to Americans) are no joke if they come out on the road at night (or day!) I find it very upsetting if an animal is not killed instantly, I'd hate to run down a dog or cat or anything at all.

Regards, Will

Thank you Will.
Hitting a wildboar would be a nightmare - the whole car would be garbage. Here, in our country, they are very usually kind of wildlife. When I was a kid, I remembered that they were nearly died out. But they got resettled and nowadays are very common here. I´ve seen already some while I was out searching for mushrooms in the woods. For luck, they were far away and without the piglets. Mother-Wild-Boar can get very aggressive, was told to me.

I´ve heard about the elks (moose) in Scandinavia. When I was for vacation in Norway 2008, I wondered why they have speed limits to 80 km/h on their roads and asked a man on a gas station. He told me - Mooses and the fog (very Fjord has its own weather)!

I think the same way, I hope that the deer with the broken leg and propably a massive shock has been salvated by the hunter, and had no long time to suffer.

Hey guys,
I've been away a few days, and alot has been going on in the meantime.

Andi, I'm sorry for you (same for Kevin, actually). No deer here, but I know a handful of people who have crushed onto wildboars here at night. One even crushed into a horse, and it was one of the biggest roads of the whole island. Those animals are capable of alot of damage when you hit them...but, after all, the material damages only matter when there's no big harm to people...which is why I'm happy to hear you are sad about your car.

Shrapne1,
we want a picture of her holding the yellow trapper...then we'll be sure it's her :D glad to hear that good things come to you when you follow your passions (knives...but not just knives )

Ed,
I travel alot, and usually lock my luggage. Not because it keeps it much safer, but because I don't want it to open accidentally. I've also used one of those whatsitsname (plastic strings used by plumbers, electricians, and so on), cut it off when I arrived, and put a new one when I was travelling back. No risk of losing the key.

Now, for the record...I was in London for a few days. No knife (I was travelling with hand luggage only), and I missed it a few times, but in the end I survived just fine
A couple pictures to add spice to the post:

Thanks Kevin. It was a lucky shot. I brought my new camera, I was gifted it recently and had never used it before, so I knew nothing of it. A few casual shots left me pretty happy with it. Hopefully, with time, I will get more confident with it (I also need to get a zoom for it).
The trip was very nice. I always loved London, it never disappoints me. No knife though...but hey, I'm back to my knives now ;)

Guys: Am I a freak? I don't think I've ever purchased a decent knife (which excludes the Pakistani/Chinese crud I bought as a kid in the 70s and 80s) and had "blade play" to the point that it bothered me. I've bought countless knives from Schrade, Buck, Victorinox, Gerber, Queen, Case and more, and it's just never been an issue. Yet it seems every other post I read on these forums, and every other comment posted to Youtube knife reviews is about blade-play and wobble. :( I guess I'm just not discerning enough.

I dunno. I think all the knives I had in the 60's and 70's had a bit of play. (All were American made.) It was normal to me at the time. I never thought anything about it because the knives still worked. And if the knife worked for cutting stuff, that was all I needed.

I sometimes start to get huffy about some of the complaints, but then I remind myself that this is a forum of collectors and knife knuts, who want everything to be just so. Different paradigm.

I think it comes down to expectations. They can be a dangerous thing. It wasn't until I had knives without play that I disliked knives with play. Its funny how it works. Sometimes I think I should sell all my knives but one and just drop the hobby entirely.

I've got a few older knives with a bit of blade play, and it doesn't really bother me. It doesn't interfere with the knifes use, and to be honest, I think of the bit of excess space in the joint like the slop in a old GI issue 1911. A little Hoppes gun oil and it floats out dirt easier than on a tight knife with almost no clearance in the joint.

Heck, some here will think me a little weird that I like a little play!

Carl.

You ever notice that the ones with just a "little bit of play" seem to be the smoothest openers...
