"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

The tornado was on the ground for 200 miles, if I heard the governor correctly. I didn't know a tornado could do that.
I read that too, but also read there were around 30 tornados last night so I don't know is they mean there was one tornado that stayed on the ground 200 miles, which would be rare, or it there was a damage path longer than 200 miles caused by multiple tornados.

Mayfield Kentucky got hit by a tornado last night. I've been through Mayfield dozens of times over the years. Its a nice little town. This is awful ☹️

This is a tragedy — loss of life and loss of home and community — but people started pulling together from to get-go. They're helping each other, be it family, friends, neighbors, or strangers. They're acting out of love, and solidarity, and kindness. This is what we do as Americans. Not the other crap.

I witnessed this up close and personal when I was displaced by the 1993 flood. People I only knew in passing offering me a place to stay.

And now there is one:

I loved them when I was 6 years old. Then hated them when I was a teenager. Hearing them again as an adult, after I stopped caring if music was "cool" or not, I started liking them again.

Not to get all nerdy about it, but many of their hits were written by the greatest songwriters of the time (Neil Diamond, Boyce & Hart, Goffin & King, Weil & Mann, Neil Sedaka, et al) and recorded by the best studio musicians in the world (The Wrecking Crew). In the 1960s, I had every album.

I gots to know if JohnDF JohnDF loved the Monkees or loves that three of them are dead.

Of course I love the Monkees... America's answer to the Beatles. 🤠

I was 16 when the Monkey's were all the rage. If I recall correctly they didn't write their own music, and weren't really musicians. That bothered me.
Mostly what bothered me was that my girlfriend was gah gah over Davy Jones. After awhile I'd had enough. Needless to say, I started dating another girl. :D ;)

Mike wrote a lot of good songs himself. Linda Ronstadt's Different Drum comes to mind. (Watch, I'll be wrong about that.)
Anyway,

There was one of those cars at a nearby antique mall for a while. They wanted a huge sum for it, but it eventually went.
It doesn't surprise me. Some old toys are worth a lot to collectors. Of course, we here at BF, wouldn't know anything about that Augie.gif

It used to really bug them that people thought they weren't playing their instruments.
It used to really bug Davy that some girls thought Mike was cuter.
It surprised me to learn just when looking them up recently, that Mike and Peter hated each other. (They must have been pretty good actors.)

If there's a Rock'n'Roll heaven, I wonder if it's a hellscape.

Anyway,

You are correct, sir. He was a singer-songwriter before The Monkees, and he is credited with helping to create the L.A.-California-Country-Rock thing. He's also credited with having invented the music video.

All these years later, I stand corrected!
It did, however, bug the heck out of me having her go on and on about Davy Jones!

In the 1960s, Nesmith and Tork both had adequate credentials as pop musicians. The Monkees wrote some of their songs, but their mega-hits were written and recorded by others. "The Monkees" was a business proposition, not an art project. Don Kirshner called the shots, and they were pretty good shots.

Lots of guys lost their girls to the Davy Jones thing. Like the Elton John song said, "Suzie went and left me for some foreign guy."

...and weren't really musicians. That bothered me.

I just want to add one thing. Whether The Monkees were "really musicians" or not, the studio musicians who were hired to record the tracks were extraordinary — really unbelievable. Very few people work at that level. If The Monkees had been "really musicians," it wouldn't have mattered. You can be a great basketball player, but that doesn't make you Michael Jordan.

I personally knew a few studio musicians. They hardly ever get the praise they deserve.
