"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

You’ll notice that he starts off on a German BMW that magically turns into a Triumph for the stunts. I had the pleasure to ride my BMW up Mansell street which is used in the car chase in Bullet, lots of steep hills. 😃

Yes! :D That's very cool, it's a great film :)

Oh the Greatest non-escape ever!!! 😁 Love that scene.

Steve McQueen used to do many of his own driving and motorcycle stunts!

Actually, Bud Ekins did the Great Escape motorcycle stunts and many of Steve's other stunts. Insurance companies don't like stars doing risky things. But it's true that Steve had pretty good bona fides as an auto and motorcycle racer.

I thought Steve McQueen did all the stunts, apart from the jump over the barbed wire fence, which Steve Etkins performed?

So, I have to ask, when you lived on Coleman, did you happen to know a Navy vet by the name of Bill Lonegan? He lived in the area and sometimes hung out at the IB VFW.

Name doesn't ring a bell Frank. When not at one of the Country Western bars in Imperial Beach - the "Country Bumpkin" and "Hutch's" etc. we hung out at the Fleet Reserve. We ate at Jalisco's quite often which I've learned recently won a Southern San Diego award for best Mexican food.

I believe you are correct. He did a lot of the riding, but they wouldn't let him do the famous jump. Same, more or less, with Bullitt. Le Mans was a slightly different story because he was producing the film. I read the Terrill biography, but it was a while ago.

He did, and there was another stuntman too. I think they're all in on the chase scene, which was added to the script at McQueen's suggestion. Steve Etkins gives a good account of the stunt, for which he received a $1,000 bonus. He should have negotiated! :D
Greatest Car of All Time...
What about this one (knife content)?! 🤣

It'll be valuable one day!! 🤣

You should read Kipling's The Betrothed.

Vince, I finally read the poem you recommended.
I had no idea of the source for this famous quote: "And a woman is only a woman, but a good Cigar is a Smoke."
Thanks! 🤓 :thumbsup::cool:

Still a good place.
Knew it would be a fluke if you did. My wife's uncle. He still lives in that area. He's in your age group. (the young at heart.)

My mate Currie found a beautiful 78 Toyota Corona in a lady down the roads garage..immaculate ...5000k on the clock...bright orange and has venetians in the back window...anyone guess what number plates he reckons hes getting for it?

78-5000? I have no idea how many characters are on an Australian license plate…

You can pay extra for personalised plates...i could get MEAKO for instance but im to stingy to fork out for that...he s thinking VIRUS...because its a Corona....I know...hilarious...aaah the joys of motoring..
OHHH….
I misread it as “Corolla”

I like RONA better for the tag, then.

Meako, I had a 78 Corolla. One of my most reliable cars ever. It went over a trillion miles (or several trillion kilometers ;) :) ) with nothing needed but oil, tires and gas!!! If your friend gets a custom plate it should read 1978-2078.

Had a 2006 Corolla that I finally sold last year. Well over 300,000 miles (odometer stopped at 299,999).
