I hope my life never depends on whether I've left behind the awl or the can opener.

That's a tough call. I guess it's easier to ream a hole with a can opener than to open a can with an awl...

I am currently locked in a battle of wits with a mouse which has been seen scurrying across my kitchen floor the past 3 days. He has so far artfully dodged the glue traps I put out, even while scampering for his life when the light goes on. My wife has been laughing at me and calling me Mr. McGregor…

Besides the beard and glasses, I don’t see the resemblance at all…

We get mice in our garage sometimes. I’ve had mixed luck with glue traps. This style of plastic snap trap has worked best for me by far. Peanut butter for bait, trigger towards the wall as Jer said, preferably somewhere not out in the open. More humane than glue traps, too.

That's unusual. Of course you're putting the trap against the wall with the trigger toward the wall?
They are glue traps, and I put them along the walls and appliances exactly in the spots I saw him run the night before. When I turned on the light he went right to the first one, stopped at the last second, ran to the second one and again stopped when he got to it, then went around and under the stove. I turned the oven on - hopefully he decides my kitchen is too hazardous to take up residence in.
I hate using glue traps because they are cruel, but the last time we had 2 mice, and that’s all that worked. As long as I hear them when they get stuck so I can take them out and dispatch them quickly, I’m ok with that, though.

What if your life depends on your NOT having either??? 🤔🤔

Thanks. Yeah, I just commented above about glue traps being inhumane, and how I attempt to deal with it. If the critter makes an appearance again, I may try the one you are suggesting - the shriek they make when they get stuck is quite disturbing…

Huh.
I've had good luck with Tomcat spring traps, which are less nerve-wracking to set than the old wood-and-weak-staples type.
I've never tried the glue traps because I don't want to hear the mice scream. And I guess I'd be squeamish about stepping on them to shut them up, and it would be ridiculous to take them out and shoot them.

I don't know what is worse, rats, mouse, or a raccoon in the chimney...

My neighbor right now has a raccoon with babies in their chimney. And they have dogs that are going crazy. Hear them practically all night trying to claw into the chimney to get to the Raccoons.

My wife was coming out of the shower few nights ago and I was down stairs...and I hear, "OMG!! OMG!!! COME UP QUICK!!!" Lol, and she points out through our window on top of my neighbor's roof 🤣

I've chatted with my neighbor and they have contacted the wild rescue, but evidently, right now is the busiest time of the year (spring). They don't really want to kill the mom, so they are just patiently waiting.

Deal with that Mouse problem quick...or you'll be overrun  and then the Rats may take a fancy to your kitchen too..

Traps, well yes they can work but sometimes it just maims them or takes off a leg...then drag themselves off to die behind some wall, the STINK 💩

I could send her over for an eye-watering fee 😎 but not only is she a remorseless hunter of rodents, small snakes too and unfortunately lizards but she leaves birds alone, just chases them. Once rodents get a whiff of a hunter Cat they wisely move house or die in the attempt...

And why all the hate for Raccoons? They look very handsome, agile, but then we don't have them here so I can admire them at a distance.
