"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

You folks have some fine collections of dinosaur-descendants there. I think they are biding their time until we turn the world into a warm rainy greenhouse so they can re-evolve and take over the planet again. They are playing the long game.

Anyone knows what happened to Joe from MesserHQ youtube channel? He's been making very good, informative videos about traditional knives. Then he suddenly went silent and now all videos on his channel are gone.

Not sure about his YouTube, but he seems post regularly on Instagram (most recent post was 2 days ago).

I'd love to know if y'all have any tricks like the CD trick to keep rats away from my pomegranate tree!!! So far the only deterrence I have is some rat traps and my dog who sits by the yards sliding door at nights and waits for the rats. When the rats are on the tree she usually is able to corner at least one of them behind my shed which is right next to the tree. The rats hide behind the shed thinking they're safe from the dog there but it's where they meet their demise with my airsoft gun. I wish that gun had some iron sights on it instead of the obnoxious scope that I can't for the life of me zero in perfectly.

They do tend to bring their friends! :D In the city centre here, in the early evening, you can see vast flocks of them, moving and turning, like a huge piece of fabric blowing in the wind. They are very fond of my mate's second-hand tools too! :D

That reminds me of a thing that happened sometime in the early 80‘s. One evening I left my car outside under a tree. The next day as I came back I discovered that a bunch of starlings took the very same tree as overnight place.

There was not one piece bigger than a 1 Deutsche Mark coin that was without birdshi… It took hours to get rid of it to be able to use the car again. Unfortunately that stuff is so aggressive you could see traces of it on paint even years later.

At that time I didn’t find it any fun and learned to be more aware of where I leave my car.

I also recoil from the idea that pigeons are smart. I'd have to be pretty hungry to eat one.

I imagine that folks felt a lot more open to eating pigeon in the US back when we had flocks of billions of passenger pigeons. I've always wished I could have seen one of their migrations. I wrote a blog post about them a few years back (Here it is if you are interested, Extinction: Pigeons and Rhinos). There used to be more than 5 _BILLION_ of them in the US, and we hunted them to extinction in just a couple decades of commercial hunting. They were canned and shipped out as cheap meat. At one nesting site in 1878 they harvested 50,000 A DAY for months. Their flocks could take 14 hours to pass overhead they were so huge, up to a billion birds in a flock. People said that when the flocks would pass it looked like it had snowed there was so much bird poop that they left (I read one report of them raining pink "snow" after passing through a cherry orchard area). The sound of their passage was supposed to be overwhelming and they could bring their own wind.

I wonder how much of the farming productivity of eastern North America is a result of millions of years of fertilization by the now extinct passenger pigeon. I think that a big part of why the starlings have managed to adapt to North America so well is that they have moved into the vacant passenger pigeon niche like a faint echo.

I wish I could see a passenger pigeon migration... and I wish I could taste one.

That would probably leave some stains elsewhere 😉 but fortunately the ones in Germany are much much smaller. Besides the missing Gumtrees.

But such things makes you much more aware of your surroundings.

Hey everyone, I'm finally back on line, the family is safe but we have major damage. We had to evacuate and with nowhere else to go, we ended up back home in Missouri to stay with daughters, Our power and waeter should be operational in a couple days, so we will be heading back soon. Thank you for all the thoughts and prayers.
