"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

My initial model was much narrower than this, but it seemed a little tippy when I attempted to add some scaled (correctly?šŸ¤”) weights, so I decided to go a little wider. Looking at it now, I regret the decision, but I’m committed now. I will probably have less than $400 invested in this by the time I am done, so I can always make another in the future if I don’t like the performance or find the weight of that big wide plywood bottom too heavy.

I was a much lighter person in 1977, I think mine was 36ā€ wide. Cypress is rot resistant, but not rodent resistant, as I found out. It was stored quite a few years, dry rot and mice did considerable damage. I gave it to a friend that had always wanted to buy it. He restored it and might still have it,

I went from 36 to 42ā€ top side at the beam (30 to 36ā€ at the bottom), and likewise added 6ā€ to all the other widths. I have not measured the length, but I used 12’ 1x12s for the sides.

The johnboat I helped make 50+ years ago got crushed when a tree fell from a neighbor’s yard onto my parents’ yard. It also crushed a wooden canoe my dad made, a wooden sailboat he made, and the 18’ Browning aluminum canoe I spent so much time in growing up :(.

There isn't a sad enough emoticon for all those crushed boats!
Though it's nice you got to use them for a while.

If I ever build a boat, it will probably be something between a dory and a canoe, with a shallow v-shaped bottom and a sprit sail rig, oarlocks, a sculling hole, and leeboards. I think I mean sprit rig. I have a bookmark at it in my canoe sail rig book.
But what do I mean, "if ever"? I bought the oarlocks two weeks ago for $5.00! It's practically built already.

Boat update for @CelloDan et al.
I managed to get a solid 3 uninterrupted hours to work on my boat today. Getting the sides attached to the frames while keeping everything aligned and centered was what I was most concerned about, but it went reasonably well.

Here it is with the temporary bracing in place:

I REALLY could have used an extra pair of hands when attaching the bow, as it was under a lot of tension and difficult to align. I got it a little crooked, and had to use a few extra screws, but wood filler and sandpaper should hide all that.

My Antonini electrician’s knife saw plenty of action, both the blade and the punch. It really has turned out to be quite the carpenter’s helper.

That's looking pretty dang cool Tom. Looking forward to the christening.

Pretty cool rising moon a few hours ago.

Since I was up early Tuesday morning, I watched some of the lunar eclipse occurring while I took the dog out, brought the leaf cart to the curb, etc. Clouds rolled in when the shadow had covered all but a sliver before total eclipse, so the show was over for me at that point.

But I also happened to see the moon rise Tuesday evening, as in Gary's photo, and I thought the full moon rising was actually more impressive than the lunar eclipse. The full moon appearing through the bare trees would have been great a week earlier, really spooky for Halloween!:thumbsup::cool:

It's funny how huge a rising moon can be. I don't know if there are conditions required or if you just have to be looking from the right vantage point.
I wound up with these yesterday.

Wrong thread for that pic anyway.

Didn’t Gordon Lightfoot write a song about its demise?
