"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

here's a pic from the first 24H Le Mans 🇲🇫
YgKUU0i.jpg

few realize it all began with civilians racing surplus APCs (armored personal carriers) ;)

The race was to test regular cars' reliability.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1923_24_Hours_of_Le_Mans
That year also E. Bugatti built the streamlined type 32 called "tank" but these were GP cars.
The automotive industry considers LeMans an extremely important and purposeful race. Now for 100 years race fans have enjoyed a racing venue that has provided them with some of the best racing anywhere.
I took a look at the cars in the 1923 LeMans race and with today's designs in mind, thought they looked a heavy. Sorry if my comment while intending to be humorous may have appeared a bit glib.

David Kramp's got me thinking.

Foraging Farmer's double-ender?
And why stop there? If I took these apart and put back enough blades, I'd be right back where I started!
These blades each have their own spring, except for the openers, so if I lost the openers Id be down from five layers to four, which would not be worth the effort.
If I kept just the mains, I'd be down to two layers, and it could be single or double-ended.

[I just ordered another one with a sheepsfoot instead of a pen.]
Hmm.
Nothing bad ever happens when I get to thinking.

Or, delete the screwdriver on a three-blade electrician.

Or leave the three-blade electrician alone and have a digging/scraping/light prying blade on your forager.

That electrician on the bottom left.... I've been eyeing those up. You could make two single blade knives out of that one and have a ton of fun. Either make an extra set of liners or wait for a really worn out Klein electritian to auction for a couple bucks to steal the liners from.

The double ended farmers jack would be really cool but if you dont do that, I think you should put both of those SAK's into one and make a super SAK! 🤪

Good ideas.
Or find a spear-pointed one of these...

I actually found one (new) for under $60!!! Made in the where it is supposed to be. (non-supporting dealer so can't tell who.)
$20 (shipped) is still a lot for a "penny knife" ... I want a "real" one to add to me "collection"? "accumulation"? of (in most cases "formerly" sub $10 penny knives of historical note. I have a "Kudu" copy by Cold Steel, but still want the real thing. (if for no other cause than the real thing has a 1055 carbon steel blade.)
They are sold out most places (all the supporting dealers I checked are out) , or cost $60 plus on the big river/jungle site. For $60 ... I don't want or "need" one that bad ... 🙄

If they still have one on or about August 01 or September 01, I'll get it. 😁👍 (I need some other things more, so going to/have to wait.)

Hope alll have a great Holly Day "weekend".

They had a vote for Pappy's Day lunch.
Mc Donalds won.
They serving it today. 😁👍

Be aware that the Okapis being produced now are stainless steel. From a post I had previously on the subject:
The real Okapis are chisel-ground, and the handles are 2 pieces of resin-impregnated wood pressed together. A now defunct SA knife forum used to have pictures of the process and the old machinery. The Bay is absolutely full of counterfeits of the ratcheting model, sometimes outright sold as “replicas”, and if you do stumble across an authentic one, it will cost way more than the $25 bucks or so they are actually worth.

I am a big Okapi fan, and have quite a few of them:

I bought my first Okapi in East Africa around 1990, from a cardboard display much like this one (Image from this website: https://www.lecouteau.info/catalogues/okapi-vers-1945-49/ ) :

I never carried it much, just keeping it as a sort of curiosity, until it was stolen in 2003. It was just stamped Okapi Carbon Steel, and I had no idea where it was made until much later - South Africa, because, although it was pretty soon after the move, it did not have “Germany” stamped on the blade.

I finally got another one maybe 6 years ago, and decided I liked it for EDC after all.

The brand has recently been acquired by Lasher Tools. They have reduced the catalog to just 3 models, and switched to stainless. The handles appear to be made on the same machinery, though.

Darn! The listing says "1055 carbon steel"
Guess there no need to "upgrade" after all. Oh well. Coulda shoulda (woulda if I had known the future) bought one (or more) back indi 1990's or 20 Double Aughts. 🤨
No "biggie" I guess. I am pretty sure I can use that money for some arrows or a archery thumb ring, instead. 😇
