"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

I guess I'll just put this here. Mods, if this isn't the correct place for this, just delete please.

I haven't been posting much this past week because last Wednesday I had a right nephrology-ureterectomy, (removal of right kidney & ureter), due to cancer. It was a four hour operation, and two hours in recovery. I was out of the hospital the next day & moving around very, very carefully. I'm still moving pretty slow, but I'm walking 1 1/2 miles a day now. I still have a catheter, which is quite inconvenient, to say the least.

I go to the surgery center this Thursday & the surgeon will be injecting some dye into the bladder through the cath & check for leaks using fluoroscopy. Then the cath can come out. Yeah!

The surgeon & pathologist have said that although the cancer was high grade, it was all contained in the right ureter, and kidney, with no metastasis to surrounding organs, tissue or lymph nodes. I'm not going to need chemo, which is a relief.
That does not sound very fun in any way shape or form (I'd put it more bluntly, but I'd end up using "language unbecoming of the porch").
Glad to hear you are doing better.

Sorry to hear this.
Wishing you all the best mate.

I know it's awful to go through that kind of surgery. Sorry you had to deal with that, and so glad to hear they got all the cancer. The prognosis sounds great. That's wonderful.

Sorry to hear about the original cancer diagnosis, but happy to hear that the surgery/treatment was so successful. Prayers for a quick and complete recovery, and for no future cancer episodes.

I'm impressed that you're walking 1.5 miles per day so soon after surgery. I try to average 7 miles walking each day, but I can't imagine doing 1.5 miles less than 10 days after having some of my "plumbing" removed!

Glad to hear the prognosis is good and you’re progressing so well. I was on a catheter for eight days after my prostatectomy three years ago and I can’t imagine walking a mile and a half while still on the catheter. My walking was just from the bedroom to the kitchen and back the whole time. Hope you continue to improve quickly!

This was sad to read. Glad to see you're up and around, and I will pray for you!

I'm not sure if anyone here knows Larry Spicer. He's a knife dealer, but not much of an internet user. He puts on a lot of smaller gun or knife shows in the Ohio/PA/NY tri-state area. He usually sets up to sell at the GEC Rendezvous, and he hosted the Queen Pleasantville Knife Show this past weekend just outside of Titusville.

I found out that his son died in a motorcycle accident the night before the show, but Larry still wanted to push through and host the show for so many dealers and collectors who had made the trip to Titusville. He said being around the community was actually a blessing for him to help keep his mind clear for a few days. He's a stand up guy. Just wanted to say my prayers are with his family.

You have inspired me to go for a decent walk each day. Be well and feel better.
I've been called alot of things, but never an inspiration.:)
I'd rather just park my behind on my comfortable recliner, and read & doze all afternoon, but we have two Labrador retriever's, and if they don't get to go out & run a few times a day they're like a couple of gerbils on speed, running around the house & getting into everything.

It’s a tough journey. But great news.

I’ve had issues all my adult life, kidney, ureter, bladder, enlarged prostate…

I have been self catheterizing since Dec, it is much better than dealing with an in dwelling Foley. I’m on PROSCAR to reduce the prostate. May be up for a HOLEP if my bladder can work properly or the meds don’t help. I found a super Doc that has multiple Fellowships in urology. He spent an hour with me on my first visit. He found a possible stricture my previous urologist missed from a CAT scan taken over a year ago.

That's a terrible loss for him. My condolences to the family. Smoke raised.

Wow! You've been dealing with this for a long time. My journey began with a single episode of blood in the urine five months ago. Never had it before & it hasn't happened since. If I hadn't mentioned it to my family doctor a couple weeks later, during my semi-annual medicare physical, I'd still be oblivious. He immediately got me a urology consult, and this whole process began.

Mine has been more aggravating than anything, non life threatening. I’ve been seeing a urologist since I was 12. Mostly due to my kidney issue, I did have surgery at 12 to remove a stricture in a ureter.

The other issues are probably not related but my PSA spiked in December due to an enlarged prostate causing full retention. I’m not out of the woods just yet. My last cystoscopy showed no indications of cancer but I have a grade 3 or 4 trabeculation which may resolve in time or not. I have a urodynamic study in November.

Best of luck and good thoughts…

I hope your recover is quick, easy, and complete.

The prayers & well wishes are greatly appreciated, but I'm afraid that I've turned the Lounge into a bummer. sorry. That wasn't my intention.
Moving on. This pioneer has been the only knife I've carried for the past few weeks. Nothing else needed.
Not a bummer at all. It’s great to hear you’re doing better, and you never know when hearing about your experiences will cause someone else to pay more attention to possible warning signs and follow up on them.
