Three really interesting knives HerI wonder if the bottom knife is also a corn knife.
The vendor said the long one was a corn knife. I think it was Knarfeng who said that the bent one looked like a corn knife. The bottom one is similar to both in being large and roughly wrought.

And the book? It's all right, I'm an anthropologist.
Thanks. I might even say puzzling.Three really interesting knives Her![]()
Every English county once had its own bill-hook pattern, but I don't think they vary as much as those 3 knivesThanks. I might even say puzzling.
Assuming the bottom one is a corn knife, they're three very different designs, as if home-made to the user's fancy, but they all appear to have been plated. The bottom one has a dimpled surface as if somebody like me flattened it. The bent one has a deeply struck mark that might be from another planet. Maybe I can get a grip on the mark with the old brass-rubbing gambit.
And if they were in common use, why hadn't I heard of them before October 17, 2020? I don't think Eric Sloane mentions them.
(And why has it only just now occurred to me to google them?)
Fascinatinghttps://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=2ahUKEwism-DIsJOBAxVHmGoFHd3bCIoQFnoECBUQAQ&url=https://knifeade.com/what-is-a-corn-knife/&usg=AOvVaw3OBDK_otFsa4EqROdm5ZHC&opi=89978449
That was easy.
I have another corn knife in the garage that I thought was a sugar-cane machete.
And one of my odder sickles is a corn knife, too.
Just a crummy smartphone pic, but still interesting. My wife told me to look out over the backyard last night. She was wondering what the object was to the right of the moon. I've got this cool app, SkyView, that I use to identify objects in the sky. Turns out that bright object was Jupiter. Pretty cool!

What is the "brass-rubbing" gambit???Maybe I can get a grip on the mark with the old brass-rubbing gambit.
I think it's where you put paper over the brass, or in this case the tang-stamp, and rub over it with a pencil Charlie. I've used that technique myselfWhat is the "brass-rubbing" gambit???
AH!!! Thanks, Jack!! I've seen my artist-wife do rubbings of various objects!! She probably knows the fine points of the technique!!I think it's where you put paper over the brass, or in this case the tang-stamp, and rub over it with a pencil Charlie. I've used that technique myself![]()

Yes, the same technique is used for various objects, and private detectives also use it for seeing what's been previously written on a notepad of course!AH!!! Thanks, Jack!! I've seen my artist-wife do rubbings of various objects!! She probably knows the fine points of the technique!!![]()
Yeah, when I was a child, you would often see people taking brass rubbings (and stone floor/grave) rubbings in old churches. Some even provided paper. It was also something we'd do on school trips. I wondered why it had fallen out of fashion!Yup
It used to be all the rage with monumental brasses in ancient churches, until the monumental brasses started getting rubbed loose.
What I'll try is to rub red carpenters' crayon into the mark and steel-wool off the excess.
I'm glad it arrived Barrett, and sorry I had to take some stuff out (due to some shipping issues)I just got an excellent package in the mail fromJack Black which included a slim BPS fixed blade in a nice leather sheath, along with some gifts for the rest of the family — a Yorkshire hat for Scout to match one that Eleanor has, pens and pencils for Eleanor and an interesting vintage pastry fork for my wife — and plenty of sweets for the kids.

Jack, I just remembered I wanted to mention that when Mom was visiting last month, I introduced her to Henderson's. She liked it a lot, and unlike Lee & Perrin's, it's vegan!I'm glad it arrived Barrett, and sorry I had to take some stuff out (due to some shipping issues)The King of Condiments had to have a Henderson's pin! I'll try to fit the condiments in next time!
