"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

Woody Guthrie:
"As through this world you travel, you'll meet some funny men;
Some will rob you with a six-gun, and some with a fountain pen."

Ooh, that's a good one. It reminded me of the following.

~ P.

The Hand That Signed The Paper

The hand that signed the paper felled a city;
Five sovereign fingers taxed the breath,
Doubled the globe of dead and halved a country;
These five kings did a king to death.

The mighty hand leads to a sloping shoulder,
The finger joints are cramped with chalk;
A goose's quill has put an end to murder
That put an end to talk.

The hand that signed the treaty bred a fever,
And famine grew, and locusts came;
Great is the hand that holds dominion over
Man by a scribbled name.

The five kings count the dead but do not soften
The crusted wound nor stroke the brow;
A hand rules a pity as a hand rules heaven;
Hands have no tears to flow.

I'm a big fan of both Woody Guthrie and Dylan Thomas :)

If you like horror, put down the Stephen King and Dean Koontz novels, and give HP Lovecraft a chance. I bought a hardcover collection of all of his prose, I think it was printed by Barnes and Noble. Some great stories.

I agree! I like Stephen King very much, it´s the way he writes. I read "The Dark Tower"-saga almost five time (all seven books) and I don´t get really bored reading it. It´s one of the greatest sagas ever written. IMO even better written than J. R. R. Tolkien´s Lord Of The Rings. But it´s no horror. It´s just some kind of entertainment. But I really like it. HP Lovecraft is great written horror.

Andi, the first three books of the Dark Tower series are the best. I understood the ending that Stephen King had, but I didn't like it. The fourth was kind of okay, but the fifth and sixth were just plain weird. Not as weird as the 7th.

Spoilers ahead for those that didn't read the Dark Tower saga...

Roland and Jake, and Eddie I believe, travel to the real world and confront Stephen King, and save him from the guy that hit him (forget who that was, but the guy died in a house fire several years later), I think Jake was killed? Roland and the dog creature went after the Crimson King? I remember, while reading it, thinking to myself what the hell was King doing? All of his stories tie into the gunslinger mythos, and this one, believe it or not, was too outlandish. It broke the wall, I believe that's the term.

Anyway, what do I know? The Walmart on the other side of Baltimore in Dundalk sells the most Stephen King books in the nation. He went there for a book signing a couple years ago and it was all over the local news.

I have to admit, I wanted to go, but didn't want to be seen in Dundalk (a joke for the Baltimoreans on here :D).

What you say, about the connection from many other King novels to the "Dark Tower" is right and I like that way of writing. While reading "Shining" I had the same problem like you - thinking it is weird.

Jake was killed by the car that should kill King - it was the fault of the guy with the meal in his cool box and the rottweilers on the backseat. The dog creature was called Oy.

However - everyone has his personal taste.

I really like this discussion about books. :)

I thought his way of tying most of his books together was a great idea. However, having his own characters save his life, and then having Roland start all over again right back where he started in the Gunslinger, at the end of the Dark Tower, I didn't like that. He is a very entertaining author. I think the last book of his I read was Cell. Some of the members here might like his view on cellphones. I can certainly appreciate it :D.

I understand I might be in a minority, but I never really fell in love with Stephen King and his style of writing. I started the Dark Tower series, and stopped at the third book. I recognize there were quite a number of good ideas behind it, but I never really loved the way the book goes on. And as the series went on, it seemed to get less interesting, not fulfilling the promises.
About H.P. Lovecraft: he was a master of his genre. Just like William Gibson in his own.

Seems to me there are a few of us in SE PA and/or S Jersey... Anybody want to get together in person, and have a bite & a beer? Bring a few favorite/interesting pocket knives we can all chicken-eye & coon-finger? I'm inspired by Jack's post, saying he and ScruffUK are getting together. We could pick an establishment, or meet in a park, or something else that suits.
I'll suggest Fairmount Park in Philly as a nice place to sit & chat, anyone else interested? Other ideas?

We had a very enjoyable afternoon despite snow and bitterly cold weather here :) Hope you enjoy your meet-up as much as I enjoyed today. I'll leave it to Scruff to write a full report ;)

GEC on Facebook - that´s ok, if you ask me. I´m not on this site, though. Maybe they get more people interested in traditional knives...

Hm... when I look on the very top of my screen (at the BF-site) I see a "f connect" which should connect to Facebook... it´s directly left of the "Welcome, Humppa" (in my case ;) )

Hmmm Well that may explain a few things! :grumpy: ;)

Had a big family dinner last night at our house and then received a call that my wife's 92 year old grandfather had passed. It was nice to have everyone around at the time. I wish him peace as the last 4 years have been long and tiring for him. He was an amazing man that grew up in a much different time. I will miss his war stories. Born in Tennessee and died in Montana. God speed Bill.
