I'm sorry Elliott, I remember this photo you posted once before in Kerry's thread and had to reuse it! :)

We had a really fun day out on the boat.My friend brought this rig back from the dead w/ 2 siezed motors. It ran fine.
But the fish won.We caught a dozen or so Fluke of an unusually tiny size we named "keychain" Fluke. They need to be 21" in NY waters, these were half that
One large Bluefish ate the line at the top.Nothing picture worthy, ecept the Hortons Pt. Lighthouse.

But,that's why they don't call fishing,"catching"

Notice the staircase to the left (east),that comes down to the beach from the public parking lot. This is Southold LI NY

Vince, you don't happen to have any photos of the eastern most end of Long Island, do you?

Is there still parts of Long Island that are rural?

Just curious about something.

Carl,
Southold is on the North Fork of LI & is pretty much East
20 mins from that light by car & you are at the tip.I have a few pics from boat of different spots on LI. There is population here though, but compared to west of out here on LI ,this is as rural as it gets.

Here is a shot from out back of my place & we hike in these vinyards

Here is a webpage on the area
http://www.northfork.org/

You could stay out here & still day trip it,to NYC

Carl & all ,here are some shots from the water, too,of places you might not ever see (North Fork LI)

This is the Cross Sound Ferry dock,in Orient Pt (the end of the North Fork)
That Ferry carries vehichles & passengers to New London Conn.
From there, you would take a ferry to Fishers Is. (Southold Township)

This sub is in the Fishers Is "Race" with Fishers Is in the back ground That sub comes outta Groton Conn. ,opposite shore of New London Conn,on the Thames R.

This is Little Gull is (light) Conn in the background

This is the "Bug Light" at Long Beach,s shore of Orient Pt,east of Greenport harbor & the entrance waters to Gardiners Bay
DSCF4912.jpg

Very East shore of Plum Is.,Animal Research Is. Very rare photo, lol
DSCF5783.jpg

East shore of Shelter Is.,a very exclusive area of LI
That beach is technichally on the entry waters to Gardiners Bay Greenport harbor is nw from there

Very cool photos Vince! Although I don't think this happened to you, "A bad day of fishing beats a good day at work".

This is last Sunday with Copper & Ruby in the Great Peconic Bay (Hogs neck area) in Southold Township
Please refrain from the "Vince, you need to lay off the pasta" comments.Or Mike, no "You're lactating" comments. Please, being Italian can be impusive, you know. No bald shots at me,either, lol

Ruby is learning, just take a look at her though

Luciano,I think where we went wrong is the water temps are way up & you really need to be out in deeper water offshore more
We are spoiled in a sense. There is so many spots out here in so much water, the best trips we charter & a pro Capt.,puts us on the "meat"
Private trips are hit or miss

Here are some "hauls" from chartered trips,in the past

DSCF3599.jpg

This was from a trip in where the fish were marketed, notice the "tags" in the mouths These bass need to be of a certain size,to go to market, legally
DSCF5799.jpg

Here is another pic, this is another friend of mine's rig He uses nets out on Montauk for Bass
williamemilie_021.jpg

Here is a sidenote on conservation. The type of netting my friend does,a type of purse sein style, the mesh of the net only catches the marketable fish, larger escaping forward & smaller goin through the mesh On a typical haul,4 to 6 fish are wasted.Draggers waste tons of good eating fish on every day,due to reg's that are ,well, its what it is
There still are good guys out there though

Vince,

Looks like you have a sportsman's paradise in your backyard! Thanks for sharing the photos. I did have a question about the sub and the "race" ? Do you have any more information as to the name of the sub? Going out to sea duty or?

Ken

Ken,They build or service them in Groton, these Nuke subs
I do not know that vessels name, but I have seen that one & others in the Fishers Is. Race on more than one occasion
I think because of the dramatic depth changes in that body of water,it is a desireable place for sea runs & it really is out thier (Groton Conn.) back door from the Thames R. in Conn

While drift fishing for blues & bass out there, sometimes they will surface around & in between, a few vessles in a given area & it is an un real experience. They do it with precision & speed. It's a rush!
-Vince

Vince,

Thanks! I must have had my brain in neutral and now know that race refers to the channel of water, not the verb "race".:o

I goggled the Sub base and was surprised at the size, history, and personal associated with it.

Ken

Theres a Bic Lighter plant that is one of the sub base' neighbors There is a sub over there set up for tourist tours
A great area ,a lot to see
In the spring, the NECC show is in Mystic, its about a 20 min drive from the ferry there in New London
New London on the other side is one of those old New England cities, with the "old" part of the town.

Nice fish Vince! We have freshwater lakes stocked with stripers but it is not a fish I target. I love saltwater species since they are so aggressive. I am lucky in that I have a cousin in Corpus Christi that is a inshore saltwater fishing guide that I fish with several times a year and he puts me on fish quite often. Here are some typical and non-typical catches. A nice redfish just slightly over 28" so I had to tag it (slot is 20-28"). The others are examples of trophy size speckled seatrout which is probably my favorite fish to catch. They have "fangs" but are in no way as vicious as the blues up where you are.

As long as we are showing off fish, I thought I'd share this nice largemouth that I took last Saturday at the most excellently named Whiskey Lake in Brandon, MN.
Killed off about 6 bottle bass that afternoon also.

Was a book published that includes all of "jackknife's tales" that appear in the traditional section? If so I was wondering how to order a copy. Any help is appreciated, thank you in advance.

Luciano,Those Sea trout are known as Weakfish up here, for the weak jaws that hooks pull out of so easy
You just need to go south to Jersey & they start calling them by your name down there
-Vince

"The Pecos area of West Texas began irrigation and cultivation of the cantaloupe in the early 1900s. By 1913, Pecos cantaloupes were famous for their sweetness and overall flavor. The term “Pecos cantaloupe” would be promoted in the public consciousness to a level similar to “Swiss cheese” and “Maine lobster.”

I've been waiting for these all year and this morning there were some at the grocery store. Pure ambrosia, food of the Gods, boys and girls. Carl hangs the "closed" sign on the lounge door when the Pecos cantaloupes and Fredericksburg peaches show up at the stores and fruit stands. Pecos cantaloupes - the reason I left Oklahoma for Tejas. :D
