"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

No not at this point, but I think JK has thought about it now and then.

Hi Vince,

The weakfish "Cynoscion regalis" up where you are is a relative of the speckled trout "Cynoscion nebulosus" that we have south of you and around Florida down to where I am in Texas. Their mouths are delicate around the lower jaw and sides and tear up easily, especially on the smaller trout. We tend to use very light drags on the reels when hooking them unless we are sure we have a hook in the upper jaw. I love this fish though. They are pure predators.

There was a brown tide years back that wiped out the weaks, out here. They slowly came back
Prior to the wipe out,I have seen them to 21 lbs
Now pushing 9 is big and they are pretty elusive to target exclusivly, out here
Up west on this Island, they catch them in areas,as well & probably hold them better there,as far as a season

I've been waiting for these all year and this morning there were some at the grocery store. Pure ambrosia, food of the Gods, boys and girls. Carl hangs the "closed" sign on the lounge door when the Pecos cantaloupes and Fredericksburg peaches show up at the stores and fruit stands. Pecos cantaloupes - the reason I left Oklahoma for Tejas. :D

Gotta get you some "Ruby Red" grapefruits and Texas 1015 sweet onions from the Rio Grande Valley, too. Maybe some strawberries from Poteet south of San Antonio. Watermelons from Luling.

I like those Fredeicksburg peaches though I like the German food and beer around there a little more. ;)

You guys are killing me .
Hows your fresh mozzerella down there ? Up here a truck from NYC brings it daily right to my farmstand at the corner. A little tomatoe & basil, fougheddaboudit !

Yeah, that the other difference. The weakfish get much larger that specks. The world record was caught in the Lower Laguna Madre of the Texas coast by a fly fisherman by the name of Bud Rowland. It was a 37.5", 15lb. 6oz. sow that he released. The story I read was she was full of eggs and he released her so one day those genes got passed on.

That trout was almost a foot longer that the trout I am holding! She also weighed about as much as the two I am holding combined! Now that's a trout!

We have a company here, run by an Italian family that produces wonderful Ricotta and Mozzarella.
Another farm on Vancouver Island that has the right animals to produce "Bufalo", another special cheese.
When you have that Mediterranean blood, having those foods, and growing your own Basil and Tomatoes produce tranquility and good health!

I was thinking about you guys this fine evening. My wife took the kids out for a week in the country, but I have to stay in the city and work. :( The upshot is I get to catch up on a little quality pub time with my buddies, reading, and ..... of course:

After they left, I made a trip downtown to pick up bourbon and three Cuban cigars. Ought to get me through a week as a bachelor. :D

Ummm, okay, I'm gonna ask.

Why is there red things in your bourbon?

I remember growing up, watching the men drink whiskey, and the standard practice seemed to be; place one small ice cube in glass, pour in enough whiskey to float ice cube, swirl gently, then drink. Exept for the liers circle, in that case a pint bottle wrapped in a brown paper bag was passed around.

I never recall ever seeing anything in a glass of whiskey but the ice cube. I'm not familiar with red things in my whiskey!

Carl.

I love bourbon. What kind do you like? I like Wild Turkey 101 or Old Grand Dad 114.

Those "red things" are Maraschino cherries. I use 'em when I make a Manhattan.

I really dig Maker's Mark a lot. But it's ridiculously expensive here so, alas, Jim Beam. This was a Manhattan. Very light on the vermouth with three dashes of bitters. A little Freddie King on the iPod, a light summer evening breeze and I was in heaven.

I was in a Manhattan phase about a year ago. Now it's just straight bourbon for me, in the aforementioned brands, sometimes on the rocks.

I used to drink Maker's but these days I find it a bit on the sweet side.

That is my take on it too. I purchased a bottle after hearing a lot about it but I didn't care for it.

I haven't had a drink in almost 20 years, but the cigar looks great. It looks like a Romeo y Julieta Churchill.

I tend to prefer Makers Mark, too, but I checked the bar & all we have at the moment is Knob Creek, which works, too. A cigar is definitely an excellent supplement to the Bourbon.

I shouldn't read this forum so late at night. I had a dream last night that I was in a liquor store shopping for whiskey! Weird.
