"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

This granite pestle has been sitting on a bookshelf for over 40 years!!! I found it partly buried in sand, on a beach on Denman Island, BC, when we lived there for a year!! The wide end is polished smooth from use!! Wish I knew more about it!!!Pestle 1.jpg
It's just under 6" long and 2" across the broad end!!! It was probably used to grind food, or pigments???!!!!
One of the more interesting "rocks" I've dragged home!!!

Beautiful knife, too, but what's that between the hawksbill and the liner?

Charlie my grandmother grew up on a farm in West Virginia in the early twentieth century. In the spring she would follow her father as he plowed his fields and find Native American artifacts that were unearthed by his plow. She found an amazing collection of arrowheads, spearheads and tools. One of the tools was a mortar and pestle and the pestle looked a lot like yours. Unfortunately her entire collection was lost after giving it to my brother when his house burned down in the early 1980s and he lost everything. ☹️

My doctor brother and his first wife had a beautiful lake side home in Lake Arrowhead CA. It burned to the ground on New Year’s morning 1986 after his wife’s five year old nephew accidentally started a fire in the living room with a fire place lighter. Unfortunately he was left unsupervised as his parents and my brother and his wife went to bed after partying all night. When the fire alarms went off the parents of the child rushed down the stairs and out the front door leaving it open. When my brother got to the top of the stairs he told me that the fire was contained to the couch and carpet in the living room below but when the front door opened it exploded through the lower floor. They were trapped upstairs along with his wife’s other sister and had to climb out of their bedroom window to escape. The sister was obese and my brother had kick out the window jam so she could fit out the window and she broke her leg when she fell to the ground. My brother is an ER doctor so he set her leg. It took the volunteer FD a half hour to get to their house and by then it was totally engulfed. They escaped with only the clothes on their backs. What they were able to salvage from the fire would fit on a coffee table. It was the beginning of the end of their marriage which lasted about two more years. Afterwards the sister who broke her leg sued my brother after he had saved her life and given her emergency medical attention. My brother remarried and they’ve had a beautiful horse ranch in Central Oregon for the last forty years.

That's it. It soothes razor burn, disinfects light cuts and cleanses the skin. Using alum chips for canker sores makes sense but i had never heard about it before.

Dan.
No need to get a spare one, it lasts very long time. 😊
