"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

At a shop I used to work out for quite a few years, "government work" was code for personal side project for one of the employees. The owner would walk out through the shop during lunchbreak, and see me cutting something on the waterjet or laser, or welding table and say "wow, you're working through lunch! Must be an important customer" and I'd say "it's a hot order for government work that just came in!". He would wander off and I'd finish up quickly. hehe I'm sure he knew what was going on.
My father worked for TVA during WW II. He said the reason it was called government work was that it was for "We the people."

I usually hear (or say) "Good enough" with further qualification:
Good enough for government work.
Good enough for who it's for.
Good enough until we can get a pro in here to check it out.

Yeah, Gary, in my checkered past it seems like "good enough" and "close enough" were used interchangeably.
(Or maybe I didn't realize the difference between them, but I figured my comprehension was good enough.)

I'd say good enough is close enough, Gary! :) ;)

Well, I have stopped collecting Scissors, and I am taking these to the Oregon Show to see if anyone is interested!!
When F.Herder & Son, Solingen, closed down several years ago, some of the Factory display boards were sold including Scissor Boards!!
I manage to collect 4 of them - mint scissors of all kinds, with Salesman's ink on them!!Herder A.jpgHerder B.jpgHerder C.jpgHerder D.jpg
The third board has mostly Barber's shears on it!!

Nice, sir! Do you have any "dagger" scissors, those for women self-defense?

Aaand how about straight razors? ;) I am taking a little dive into those currently and would love to see the true afficionado's choices.

He swears and he cusses
He crashes the busses
Hail to the bus driver
The bus driver Man.

Yes that was me a couple of Fridays ago ...bringing primary school kids to swimming lessons at the pool...all day shuttle service...got the last run of the day...weather was appalling ...100mph gusts, trees blown over blocking the highway, driving rain...
I tried to tuck the bus in at the pool carpark so as not to block the carpark...scraped the back wheel arch into a parked car...nothing major..".less than a coat of paint in it".

It happens to the best. I've been a bus driver in Paris for 3 years, 40 years ago. As you say, some coats of paint. Cars which shouldn't have been there.

Dan.

We have a member who I have not seen in a while named TLARbb TLARbb (Ed). He was a quality control engineer, or something of the sort, and his name stood for "That Looks About Right black belt" because of his professional certifications in ISO standards (I am probably butchering his actual expertise).

Goes along with the "good enough for government work" conversation we've been having. Hope he's doing well. I see he posted in December and was last seen a few weeks ago, so maybe my mention will summon him into the thread. *waves to Ed*

Believe it or not, apparently some people are using AI to help them file their taxes. I just read a good line in an article warning against doing this:

"The danger isn’t just that AI gets things wrong. It’s that it gets things wrong with confidence."

If it wasn’t so serious you’d laugh
20 million media campaign to tell us what to do

And I would bet that the government overlords behind this are driving gas guzzlers and flying private jets.

Still have driver and car, should be using team bus. 😉
Our prime minister flew to Singapore and back last week, this week he flew to Malaysia to secure fuel supplies.
Australia only has approximately 30 day reserves of petroleum and diesel.
