"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

Been coming across all kinds of wildlife in the Yorkshire jungle recently, but this red-eared terrapin was still a bit of a surprise (Aitor Castor for scale).

Just reading backwards through this thread (why backwards I don't know) and came across this and I had to comment. You know you're a knife knut when you choose a knife to lay alongside a (still living) animal for a size reference:)

Knife people can be so weird that way.

"Always reverse into a space because its easier to back in sober than back out drunk". My grandad was pretty old school.

My grandpa never taught me that...but I always park in reverse (I get jokes for that).
It's not father's day here today, but I did spend some time with my dad this afternoon. We went to check our seaside house before the renters come, then I stopped at the beach for the first sunbath of the whole season.

Ok, you just made my day brother, got a good laugh out of that! That turtle in the first photo had no idea what could have been:)

Yep, could have ended up as faux tortoise! :D

Yep, I thought of you immediately P, and since the terrapin didn't seem to give a hoot was going to go for a similiar shot, but the critter was just on the edge of the canal and I really didn't want to lose my knife! :D

The cat seems used to the antics.

Very true! :D

My grandfather was born in the late 1860's. His words of wisdom had to be relayed to me, as he passed away when I was ~2.

"If you hear footsteps coming up behind you, turn around and see who it is. You'll live longer."

It worked for him. He lived to be somewhere's in his late 80's.

This weekend (monday to wednesday is my weekend) started out HORRIBLE!

Take 2 will happen, I am thinking 1/4" W2 differentially treated and full tang with sambar slabs instead of rat tail tang and crown roll...broke chopping some vines and tipped a piece of lumber. Guess these things happen.

Oh, no!

But... but... but... we all loved that knife.

(Not more than you, I reckon. ;))

... The original tang snapped?

What did the tang look like?

You want it to be like the bottom illustration.

Weird thing is it broke away from down past the guard...not by much but enough that it was in the radiused territory. There will be another bowie project in the works soon as I can get a piece of W2 at a reasonable price.

Hmmm...that was a repurposed, thru-hardened blade was it not? Might want to try a differential temper on that piece of W2.

Yeah, it started as a new old hic butchers knife (10" model)...I did anneal the tang and portion of the spine to take impact but i'm definitely where you're at with the W2. Its possibly my favorite steel along side 1095, both take a vibrant hamon and are tough as nails! Pretty sure I want to do a full tang this time, maybe a coffin handle?

Kinda bummed I don't have a big blade as backup atm but i'll make do.

That looks great!!! I currently don't have a forge setup or a belt sander though so i'll need to look into setting something up or sending it out (which isn't as fun). I know don hanson has in the past sold W2 by the pound so when I'm ready that might be an option.

I will design this next knife for strength and longevity...I want a bowie I can carry the next 40 years or more!

So my daughter, 10, and son, 8, just received a checklist of things they'll to bring to summer camp. On the list, a folding pocketknife. :-) Both kids think that's really cool, but my boy is walking on air! I think I'll send them each with one of mine and then, if they come home with the knife and all 10 fingers, I'll give them a SAK of their own. They should be fine, I've done a good deal of hands-on practice with each.

That sounds great Mark. What knives are you going to send with them?

Instead of lending them each a knife, it might be time to get them one of their own so that they can start making proper memories with them. An Opinel would be perfect for the task.

Robert, what a bummer!
But, on the plus side, you get to show off how nice your guard-to-blade solder joint was. ;)
